In recognition of the towering intellects at Merriam-Webster I share with you their 2015 selection for word of the year:
-ism Let not this non-word's un-wordly nature exempt it from dutifully fulfilling its role as that which it is not. When words regularly are used to mean precisely those things which they do not, it is fitting that we should acknowledge such a bane to reason in celebration of our continued perversion of language and rational thought! What is you favorite -ism?

A sad day indeed. Lament not the fall, but the unfortunate truth that we are not blind to it.
Emoji is an interesting word though given that it is a Japanese compound word formed by the forced union of an English word (emotion) and a Japanese word (ji is the kanji for character, symbol, figure) that was subsequently adopted in English. ^^
