Default Multiple Sound Streams in Windows 7 Mixer

Hello,

I am currently running Windows 7. When I play EverQuest on project 1999, sometimes I notice multiple sound streams have been started, and are in the volume mixer. One time, I must have seen two-dozen separate volume sliders for "EverQuest" in the mixer.

What is causing this and is there any way to fix it on my end?

Thanks,
Smurfu

A follow up: this seems to happen if I leave the game in the character select screen. I suspect that each time the music loops, it creates a new stream of sound in Windows. My only solution at this time (not a good one) is to quickly select my character, and do not linger in the character select screen.
