Considering trying out Red...

So I'm considering trying out Red, but I'm not terribly familiar with EQ PvP. Anybody here wanna give a quick rundown of the viability of a new player as one of the melee or hybrid classes? (Not a fan of playing pure int/wis casters)

EDIT: I'm particularly curious about how viable Rangers and/or Bards are.
