Default Strength for Blacksmithing?

The description on the Strength stat in the character creation window says "Tradeskills: If your strength is higher than your intelligence or wisdom, it determines how quickly you gain skill in Blacksmithing."

IS this true? and if so, wouldn't it be a leg up if I make an Ogre tradskill mule who has maxed out strength for making Ogre cultural?

Yes, but come Velious if you do the ring quests you're going to need some level of blacksmithing skill on whatever chars you plan to do the quests with.

Just something to think about.

True, but the trivial on the ring blacksmithing item is only 41, IIRC. Any character should be able to hit that easily just through metal bits and lanterns.

Edit: Ogres start with 130 or 140 str anyway, so the extra 10-20 you can dump in won't make a huge difference.

This. If you're rolling ogre anyways (which I assume you would if you're wanting ogre cultural) the 25 extra starting str isn't going to be worth the pain in the ass of having to transfer gear backandforth between an alt everytime you blacksmith.

A couple of considerations to that though... Trolls use Ogre cultural armour, and they can't make it. If he wants it for a Troll, he doesn't have much choice in the matter. Also, for an Ogre SK or Warrior, they start with 140 str and you can only raise stats at character creation to 150 max... so they could only put 10 points in anyway [You must be logged in to view images. Just make forged Jav's on any melee that needs smithing for shawl. Easy and useful item.
