Game Mechanics: Pet run speed broken?

i'm severely outrunning my epic pet without jboots. it seems like the pet is switching back and forth from /walk and /run whenever he follows me. if i sit him somewhere and i make him come to me though, he runs at normal speed, but when he's just auto-following me it's funky.

can a dev please check if something's broken because i don't ever recall seeing this before.
