It's a shame about the IP exemption. I have been in two groups in two years on this server. Both were fun. I normally just duo. Me and my wife. Pally and a druid.
Of course, I'm the masochistic kind of paladin that does solo. Helped a lot once I got my clickies (Deepwater). Up to 45 though, me and my wife duoed. There are plenty of places.
I know I've mentioned on the boards that I've declined unsolicited group invites. I think someone above put it best: this game is what you make of it. There's min-maxing for fast advancement, but to me personally, this was never ever the intent of EQ until after the Velious era. This game was meant to be played slowly over a long period of time.
You can't "beat" EQ. Sure you could reach a personal final goal, or truly consume all of the content and have best-in-slot items in every slot for your class, but... that just defeats the idea of a persistent world in which you live as your avatar.
I remember all the silly shit I'd do in live (and here to a lesser extent) just wasting time. Hey! I wonder what's in that little house.
I still talk to NPCs as if they'd respond.
I guess my TL;DR version is "What's the hurry, man?"
If you only find XP progression to be worth the time to play, then chances are, you are playing the wrong game. EQ was not designed for that. It was designed to be a place to lose yourself.
I've loved my almost two-year tenure here. I hope this server stays open for at least three more with its current population.
We take breaks too. My wife is a time-starved player and I've wanted us to stay the same level. Two years, we're L51. I'm going to go log in now with or without her. I could be L52 today even if I just solo. I get a new stun at L52!
See you all in game!
