You can get a little more mileage out of the duo by root-jousting on the Paladin and letting the Mage pet soak the damage/regen.

You can also pull a MOB directly into the pet, and root it there. The pet will now be tanking because it has proximity aggro, letting the Paladin attack the whole time while the Fire pet does big DPS with its damage shield. Or if you don't want to have to keep casting Fire pets over and over, then you can use a Water pet to tank and get the benefit of its fast regen.
