I think the mistake on the right is equating twitter with mainstream Democrats. And the mistake on the left is letting those twidiots go unchecked until, eventually, the right is correct in their initially faulty assumption.

The illiberal left, however, does talk an authoritarian game. Let's hope we never get to see them in a position of authority to see how much is impotent bluster.
I think that both sides get authoritarian at the ends of the spectrum for essentially the same reason:

The reason is “we don’t trust the general public to be exposed to these concepts because we believe they will become corrupted by them”

The concepts themselves are what differ. For the left it’s things that they construe as hateful, for the right it’s things they construe as deviant
