Good players will sound good on just about anything. I've seen a video of Joe Satriani playing some kid's plywood strat through a tiny starter amp, filmed with a cheap digital camera and then run through the horror of youtube audio processing. This. Tone is subjective. If you've got it, it's in your hands. You can play nearly anything, and it'll sound like you. That said, there's some technically awesome players who have shit tone. Vai comes to mind. Back in the late 80's, everybody I knew wanted Ty Tabor's tone.
