I disagree. I think asshole has always been the norm, and that sometime in the late 70's / early 80's - mostly due to the rise of women's lib - movie directors decided to paint a very romantic picture of the last century in general. Sure there were fantastic romances in the past, but also there are fantastic romances now - the point being that men have always been pigs who use women for sex (this is true throughout history, all the way to the monkeys).
