I didn't see the first yellow card during the France/Uruguay game, the second yellow was questionable, very hard slide, but didn't look intentional and kudos to the fine acting of the victim. Not hip to WC rules, but think first round only keeps the red carded player out a game or two... next rounds a red can send not just a player but keep a team a man down (correct if wrong).

Go blood diamonds!

Think they earned the right to say "the sun never sets on the British Empire" 200+ years ago...

Depending on point of view, almost the same could be said today, although not much on the Pacific end.

You say UK, as if scotland and wales are cheering for ENGLAND to win the world cup.

That'd be like the USA wanting canada to win the olympics.

Besides it's footballing tradition tha England fans go into every major international competition thinking we're one of the elite sides when we're never going to win anything.

I for one enjoy the disappointment our national team brings :D

We are only the UK when England lose or Scotland win at something. Chris Hoy? British. Andy Murray? British. David Coulthard? ...Scottish.

Ok this is going to sound like an American elitist attitude but it has to be said. What’s with all the acting in foreigner’s sports? Every time a person touch’s another one in soccer they fall down and act like they just got punched in the balls by Chuck Liddell. It’s not just soccer; it’s also 95% of the foreign basketball players as well, FLOP city. Don’t get me wrong Americans do it also, but the % of them is minuscule compared to other countries. I know I’m not the only person that thinks or notices this, and I also understand it’s to get the other players out of the game, but come on…. This is by far the biggest reason why soccer in my option is soccer < football (American style!!!!)

LOL, actually rather clever. I guess I'm just a bit more curious why this takes place? A good response from a few foreign exchange students I spoke to were always, “in our country it doesn't make you any less manly to fake it and flop”, but In our mind set (Americans) It's pussy to flop.
I must be honest and I agree with thinking it’s a cheap pussy tactic to try to get better players out of the game. I'm not wanting to watch some scrub flop on an all star caliber player and having them sit the rest of the game. I want to watch each team besters play one another. Also another reason why I think the NBA should allow 7 fouls, to many stars fouling out as is.

Football is a far better name for 'soccer' than it is for 'American football', seeing as you primarily use your feet on only one of those games! I've tried in the past to make America change the name of their sport to handball, carryball, blitzball or crunchtime (my personal favorite), but none of the alternatives have gained much popuarity for some reason.

Totally right about the way sports have gone in Europe, though it's nothing to do with the sports themselves, rather the sportsmanship of the players. Why tough it out and stay on your feet when you can dramatically collapse like a card tower, pulling a fast one on the referee and gaining an advantage for your team? In specific regards to football, the fact that still, in 2010, no video evidence is used to unsure the right decisions are made also allows for the possiblity of referees and sporting associations (hello EUFA) to favour certain teams buy placing the decision making powers largely in the hands of one indivdual. Rugby is an exception to the above, but I can't stand that sport.

For the record, despite being a Euro, crunchtime is my favorite sport to watch (perhaps next to kabadi!).

On a related note, I actually witnessed the worst case of someone 'flopping like a pussy' at a football match, and it didn't even occur while the game was in play!

For shame, Dida. For shame! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lz8kQ5bNUQA)

Though the guy involved was an idiot for running on the pitch, he actually got charged with assault, which is a total joke.

Good informative response leokaiser, I'll be totally honest when I say I don’t follow soccer much if at all anymore, but if what you said is true I believe that going to the replay is a great idea. There is talk about this in the NBA, in fact people can and have gotten fines for flopping. I would love to see a soccer player get fined or kicked out of a game for flopping!

Also I don’t believe American football will ever change the name, I find it curious though that why would they name the sport after something that was already a sport? If they just called it something different from the start (Cone Ball or pyramid ball ect ect ) Americans and Euro’s wouldn’t be arguing who’s football is really the true football.

Leokaiser
06-13-2010, 03:27 PM
Players actually can be fined or recieve bans as a result of reviewing video footage, but only after the match, and despite the impact it had on the game, the result still stands. Referees, however, rarely, if ever, get called to account for making blatently wrong decisions. Because of this, I rate football as a suck sport. Hell, I might even start calling it soccer out of spite!

Gonna go ahead and quote Hank Hill here:
Bobby, I didn't think I'd ever need to tell you this, but I would be a bad parent if I didn't. Soccer was invented by European ladies to keep them busy while their husbands did the cooking.

There is some speculation in the press that the UK's goalkeeper had a bad breakup with his model girlfriend, and that contributed to the mistake he made.

Ok so what I get from rugby is that when they are about to make the hits they always slow down and the follow through is nothing. Now when you have pads on people run at full bore and there is no slowing down and there is tackles being FINSHED.

Anyways it’s proven that American football you get hit a lot harder. So ya
American football > ALL

nicemace

ill agree, in american football you get they are more unrelenting hits. but the padding makes you invincible. hence why it is possible to take all those massive hits.

rugby is just raw dawg man power :P

and if you watch a lot of rugby there isnt much of the pussyness that you mention.

nicemace
06-15-2010, 08:47 PM
just watched that video lol, such bad context. the 'rugby' tackle is a spear tackle which is just lifting, not a big hit at all and they have a bunch of fat nobody rugby players.

biased to the days!

06-15-2010, 10:00 PM
LOL I’ll give you that those guys looked to be fat nobodies! The NFL star they used was a Corner (Quentin Jammer) although, he is fast but I would be much more afraid to take a hit from a LB such as Shawn Merrymen. The video I was going to post was Lawrence Taylor snapping a guy’s leg in two, but every time I watch it makes me turn my head! Also I will say that I agree there isn’t pussyness in rugby like there is in soccer.

If you haven’t seen the Lawrence Taylor video just type his name and snapping a guy’s leg. God that would hurt.

To reiterate: The UK does not have a football team. There is no 'UK goalkeeper'; he's the England goalkeeper. People in Scotland and Wales pretty much hate the English when it comes to sporting affairs!
