View Full Version : Why are there so many asshats on the server?

Do they come from the emu community in general and like to troll this server because its popular?
Some people just hating. Being dicks just to be dicks. For the enjoyment of being a dick. Pure fagoting. The fellowship is great for the majority of the server but then there is that few loud minority and the people who think they are cool.
The few who think trolls are funny and cool.
Thats like thinking thugs are win.
Curious... what attracts them?
I know they are on all games every server but this is an emulation of a 10 year old game. One would think the crowd would be a bit more mature.
You mean mature like calling people fags like a 14 year old?

Don't usually post in R&F but Taxi is in no way an "asshat". The dude has helped people a lot.
Also yes... most threads and trolls end up here, so if you can't take it just stay out of this area.

Yes I noticed this, I played countless mmo's and play every multiplayer game on xbox.. There are more dick holes on this server then any other game I have every played. When I first started I suggested on the forums something like give out items for donations and even Rogean told me to go fuck myself.
Can't say I have ever met anyone on this server worth while to keep playing, once you hit 50 and you killed everything there isn't much to do but get to know the people who play on the server you played for 50 levels and I want to say a good 80% of them are asshats whatever a asshat is.

The hyperbole is strong in this one. There are plenty of nice players on the server, just quit already, its bad for your health to be bitter like that.

I am a bit worried about the end game. I see so much guild drama and asshats.
I do see some cool people tho. There is hope.
GM's need to start doing some perma's on accounts not IP's imo

Yep, emu crowd is pretty terrible as far as community goes. Forums are even worse; you'd probably have a way better experience with the server just participating in game rather than visiting the forums. It's pretty much like this on every 'free2play' server.

Oh really? And what would i have done in-game that would qualify me as an asshat?
I hate people using the word fag, its a pet peeve of mine, its like racist people, i cant stand it, like fingernails on a chalkboard. So i gave you a little nudge, in the rant and flame forum. If im an "asshat" for that, so be it.

Vyal that isn’t a very good example and if anything speaks volumes for Rogeans integrity. Him accepting detonations for in-game items would ruin the creditability this server has, he would be like the douche that runs the EZ server, hey for 200 bucks I’ll give you a ring of 100. Yeah how cool is that, to spend real life money to be the most elite guy on a game?
PS. GM’s are doing an awesome job still to this date IMO, As everyone has already said they are doing this for FREE get off their sacks!!!
Except I have to disagree with Nilbog about the Lost finale still, I’ve watched it 3 times, understand it much better now, but still don’t care for it, even though the show was awesome. IDK what I wanted to happen, but I expected something else! <3 Nilbog if you have any other shows you want to discuss hit me up, I’m always down to have a good back and forth.
You people dont have much experience in MMOs if you call this community bad... my WoW server had jew shower jokes, constant bullying, ive played Darkfall where the community was 100 times worse than here... perma-flaming in the forums, oh-im-so-hardcore-go-back-to-wow argument used in every sauce, you name it.
Just a couple of examples off the top of my head, ninik the cleric who rezzed people for free, clerics that move around to rez for no fixed prices, people getting buffed in EC on a regular basis, me rescuing some random noob in the Najena jail cells, porting for CRs all the time. If youre gonna criticize, do it for something real, if youre making phony claims people are gonna point and laugh, thats not being an asshat.

PvP games/servers and unofficial servers tend to attract the scum of the gaming world. Ragers, griefers, "bullies", hackers, exploiters, those banned on Live servers, immature kids too young to pay for the real deal, you name it. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see the trend.
Darkfall = PvP Game = TERRIBLE community
WoW = PvP servers are 500x worse than PvE/RP realms in terms of community.
LoTRO = PvE/P2P game, one of the best communities out there.
EQLive = PvE/P2P game, used to have a great community before MQ became widespread. Still does to some extent.
EQ2 = PvE/RP servers, amazing community.

Thats unfortunatly the case most of the times i think, i play the game Heroes of Newerth and the community is just dumb as fuck, its all about e-peenery.
But take eve online though, thats the only MMO ive seen, and ive played dozens of AAA titles, where there are guilds stricly dedicated to making noobs learn the game. Granted the complexity of eve naturally helps spawn these kind of guilds, but still, its a hardcore PVP game, and there are tons of players dedicated to helping others. For example in my 00 space corporations, there was weekly courses on how to be a fleet commander, thats one of the funnest experiences ive had in a MMO, to watch 40 people getting schooled like that. You have players that just camp the help channel to answer questions noobs might have.
So i think in general youre right, but not always the case. Its certainly not the case on this server, in my opinion. Ive seen more friendly/laid back people than the other way around.

If you are judging by the posts in rants and flames, any community is going ot be full of asshats. I personally consider rants and flames a game in and off itself.
I just started playing a few weeks back, but I have found nothing but extremely helpful people here in game. I met one jerk who started KSing my low level group in EC because someone thought he needed help and killed a lioness 30 minutes earlier (true story -- he must of logged out and ran his main over). He then apologized right after and explained he was mad at some other high level then buffed us to make up for killing three mobs. Of course, I haven't made it to high levels where the most contention comes from, but I judge by how helpful people are to low levels.

Darkfall, had a great community if you weren't a carebear. It was a full loot sandbox pvp game. If you expected everyone to be nice and kind, you are a fool. If you expected enemies around every corner and didn't cry after getting ganked, you could meet a lot of cool people.
People treated enemies like enemies and friends like friends. I dunno, the community was pretty good when you got into it. PvP is going to cause strife among enemies, but thats how it goes. I never saw drama in it I didn't see in EQLive.
WoW is the garbage dump of MMOs. Its mostly little bratty kids who want instant gratification. The playerbase is what killed that game for me. Otherwise it could have been kind of fun.

I'd say the community here is very good, and I've been around to witness a lot of it. I've probably given away 5-8k worth of items and money to newbies, but I always find it funny when I go to give a newbie 30p, and he goes "someone else just gave me 50p, I'm good, find another newbie to give it to." I constantly talk to low levels who have had some higher level help them out for free, often just by showing up and handing things out.
The majority of the bad community here comes from so many players with a very good knowledge of the game all wanting to do end game stuff, and kicking each other in the nuts to get what they want. I bet you before Kunark comes out we have over 6 guilds with the player base to kill any boss in the game, but probably only a couple with the ability to *camp* or *race* for a mob. I've always tried to be friends with everyone in every guild, and I find it astonishing the hatred I see between guilds.

Yea. I don't expect to kill naggy or vox on this server. I dont intend to not level once kunark comes out and I work full-time and don't intend to join a hardcore raiding guild. Its cool. I've killed them before. I killed them when they were a challenge before. So Im ok with it. I do want my epic. I do want to kill bosses in Kunark and Velious and in the Planes. So, hopefully I can get to do that. I plan to stick around till velious, so Im pretty confident it will happen. I am in no rush.

Its not about being nice and kind, its about being stupid. Anytime you criticized some concept in the game, the "go back to wow" card was played. I dont know when you played but i beta tested it from february 2009 to may 2009 and it was just stupid.
For example in beta, i was told i was a carebear because i wanted to put a stop to people deleting their shit while you were running after them on a mount. Say the guy was running out of stamina and he knew he was gonna die, then he could just delete everything that was on him before i killed him to deny me any loot. I was told to go back to wow and that i was a carebear for suggesting to put a timer on deleting. The rationale being that i wanted to be "entitled" to some loot, hence a carebear and i should go back to WoW. A bit like you did.
Your post makes me want to check out Eve. Why'd you quit?
I didnt, im still playing. Its a bit harsh to be starting now, to be frank, its gonna take you a couple of months just to start pvping. PVE is boring after a while, if you do start playing, join one of those "academy" type corporations. The best part about Eve is that i can be playing EQ emu and my skills are still going up in Eve.

Perhaps I'll check out Eve in the weeks ahead, thanks for the feedback.
For a free server, I think P99 has a surprisingly pleasant player base. There are certainly conflicts over camps and such as the available content gets more crowded, but I can't think of many dedicated misanthropes on the server and fewer still since global ooc was disabled. Everyone has bad days. It's not so hard to send someone a tell the next day and apologize for being a jerk.

My experiences with other players in game have been positive in all but a select few cases. Most people here seem to be both helpful and generous, as was my experience when I played EQ back in the day.
The problem is this forum. I noticed it straight away, and eveyone of those aforementioned nice people I've talked to about it in game are in agreement; many of the more vocal posters here do not reprsent the quality of the players in game. To me this is quite sad, as for many people this forum will be their entry point to the server, and I'd be willing to hazzard a guess that some have come and been put off the idea of playing here - I personally started installing as soon as I heard about p1999, but coming here first might have given me pause for thought (though maybe not!).
Cyrano's suggestion of not coming to R&F is probably a good one for those of a more sensative nature, but the reality is that all the vitriolic bile is not contained to this dedicated subforum; the hatred and derision seep out into other parts of the forum where it's not really appropriate if you ask me. People often comment how few players 'bother' to check these forums, but I do not see why this is surprising if the majority of players in game are nice, while the (vocal) majority on these forums are not.
I honestly feel that the server as a whole would benefit from containing the flames and harsh mannerisms to this subforum; let the keyboard warriors battle it out here, but make the other forums a place where discussion doesn't have to happen on a level lower than that of WoW General Forum!
However, I expect my opinion, laid out rationally and in a neutral tone, will be labled as that of a whiney bitch and told I should just stop coming to the one place where discussion on the server as a whole can take place. C'est la vie.

I was on the providence side of the providence war this winter, the leader our alliance made a stupid move and dropped sovereignty of our systems while we were in the middle of an invasion and tripleA just came and took over. I was in Aegis Militia then.
We then moved to Primary space, but leader made yet another bad move, so i left the corporation (Hammer of Light) and moved to High sec for now to plan ahead, but i dont really play, i just skill up lol. Im not sure im going to play for long actually, I just play it cuz its one of the only MMOs i enjoy out there beside this EQemu.

Yea, the forums were fucking insane when it came to that, but it was only the same 5 people.
In game the only douches were the guys who clan dec'd New. Everyone esle was really nice.
I was complimented on my playstyle by people I tried to gank and such. I got chased once by three people who tried desperately to kill me until I finally lost them around some hills. I ended up chatting with the one guy a few times I logged in after that. People were friendly in game. IT was a pvp game though, so people will kill you on site. Most were dicks about it. Except the hackers too.

lol I hear ya...
I am/was an old timer player on EVE, but kinda "quit" after my several-years-long corporation died.
Was part of a corp who merged into Shinra during the days of the old Curse Alliance, and stayed in Shinra during it's time in [5], Lotka Volterra, etc.
Shinra died couple years ago, and I just moved whatever assets I could get my hands on and parked in Empire. Made a corporation and stuck my chars there... every now and then I reactivate my account, to train my skills up a bit.
But yeah, I feel your pain... stupid alliance leaderships, making bad calls all the time. I know that all too well. =/
Now, for the Sci-Fi MMO fans out there, gotta keep an eye on this... CCP better get ready, because if this game doesn't bomb like Star Trek Online did (ugh)...

I blame warcraft, and current inability to tie peoples forum handles to their accounts. The emulator in general is a group of folks that honestly enjoy hacking and fixing problems. Some of that culture is in general....adept at making themselves seem like asses, all the while chuckling & grinning like the cheshire cat. They get off on getting you up. Nothing more than trolling tools, don't be their hoe. It's heartening to hear some scorn for this type of behaviour from a dev, Aeolwind. The question then becomes: if the devs don't like seeing it, why does it seem to be permitted?
Lack of manpower to police the forums more? Lack of will to silence the more outspoken community members? Or just not seen as that much of a problem by the other devs (and perhaps yourself)?
Again, I'm sure most people would be happier if the 'trolling tools' were confined to their own little playground so the rest of us could converse in a mature and adult fashion.

The anonymous nature of the internet lets people feel the need to get their asshattery on without repercussion. Because this is a forum, I can pick and choose what I read or post on it. Honestly, if you don't want to see some of the insane attitudes, don't click the link.
Honestly, the whole "GM's need to..." statement really bothers me. They have don't enough to do without sending the forums into a police state. I LIKE the fact that I can say what I want here without someone telling me I can't say ass. Oh I could go on and on about this all day...

I haven't said anything 'needs' to be done about the atmosphere on this forum; but is there really anything wrong with hoping to be in a friendlier, more relaxed enviroment (in regards to attitudes rather than rules)?
We can pick and choose what we read, but only in so far as the title of the topic goes, because ranting and flaming is not limited to the Rants & Flames forum - this is the crux of my point. So basically, if someone doesn't want to read hateful garbage, they should choose not to read anything on these forums? Yeah, ok, I'm exagerating a little, but my point stands; there is little to no respect shown by some people to other posters in all the subforums.
And yes, I imagine the devs and GMs have what many would consider more important work to be getting on with, but I am certain there are more than a few resonable people out there who would be willing to help with moderating the forums to make it a more inviting place for players new and old alike.

You don't need to "police" forums as long as the users have thick enough skin to not cry irl over someone calling them a jerk on an internet forum. If you say something retarded and I call you a retard, what's the big deal? Suck it up. Same as in-game. Some people are more outspoken than others. Same went for original EQ as well as Real Life, although I don't think many people here experience that game often.

On a personal level, I'm rather desensitised to internet trolling, or I wouldn't be reading here in the first place, but it doesn't stop me shaking my head in exasperation fairly often. The same isn't true for everyone however, and perhaps this is telling from the low number of active posters we have compared the server population.
I've acknowledged that I have exagerated my point a little, and I feel you are downplaying the matter a little in a similar manner. Yes, there is a lot of good information and advice to be found here, but there are also a lot of threads (without going through them, I could point to at least one on the front page) and posters that go far beyond 'mild trolling'. I also wouldn't buy into an argument that because the majority of topics at the minute are troll-free, the expections become acceptable.
I've said all I can on this topic without simply reiterating, so I'll leave it at that. But as an aside, I did call it in my first post that I would be told me not to read here and called a whiner for my objective thoughts on the matter!

By mild trolling i mean it happens here and there, i didnt mean the severity of the trolling. The main problem ive seen is the disgruntled type people that tries to be disruptive in a bunch of posts in rapid succession, and ive seen these people get banned swiftly.
I dont mean to be too rude, but come on, lets call a spade a spade. If youre going to start an hyperbolic thread called "So many asshats on the server" and basically anyone who asks for a sow and clarity in EC tunnel gets it in under 2mins, youre gonna get called on it.

Well we are pretty much in agreement here; my comments relate purely to the forums. In game I think the community is pretty good.

A server where someone calling someone else a fag gets called out and told thats immature and not ok, thats a good server. If I just didn't care about community at all, I would go play more wow. I still have an active account, and it's nice for when I want to play a game where at any given moment someone is typing out the entire song "Journey" in the trade channel... It's a nice song, granted...
I honestly feel safe and secure on this server knowing that most of the community are helpful nice people, and that the few that AREN'T are the minority and that they ARE kept in line.

Ive leveled a druid to 46 and i can count the bad groups ive had with both my hands... and half of that is trivial stuff like some guy who doesnt want to roll NBG and i find it mildly annoying.
Can you be more specific? What made you come to the conclusion that there were "So many asshats on the server" ?

You still owe me 100pp for that port in WK, i give you 3 days before the trains start raining.
COME ON WITH IT. Also do I really? Cuz I will kill whoever was playing my account if they got me in debt! KILL.
The most memorable asshat is some SK who was never ready to take aggro off the pulling monk and chanter, and after a while we'd tell him, dude, get on it, its not hard, use your DOT. And he was all like "Ive got 3 50s, i know how to play" and it became the theme for the rest of the night with our group, any debate could be solved by "Fuck that, ive got 3 50s" lol
Going afk for 20mins guys, its ok ive got 3 50s!

Haha that's awesome. I've done something like that on my bard, but instead of going "I've got a 50 I know how to play," I've said "I've got a 50 and I'm too fucking lazy to put a ton of effort into this right now, ONE SONG FOR YOU!"

As much as assholes are annoying and likely to ruin your experience from time to time, I also think they make the kind things done for you shine a lot brighter in comparison.
I personally am the type that little to no tolerance for douchebaggery in situations I control. But I feel a good bit different about public situations, especially one where multiple people are in control.
It's a pretty slippery slope to want GM's to set a standard expectation of behavior, and follow up infractions with a ban or whatever you're implying for them to fix the 'asshat' problem. I realize this doesn't apply to breaking established server rules, but we're more talking about moral and ethical judgments made by the players.
I would imagine a majority of that behavior is frowned on by the dev staff, but I just don't see how it's fixed.
I think the best way to fix most of these things are to isolate douche bags and make a conscious effort to not make them a part of your gaming experience. You generally can control your ignore list, and who you end up in groups with.
The older I've gotten, the less time I waste on people who affecting my time negatively. This is exponentially more true for video games.

Has any EQ server NOT had a lot of assholes? My experience on P99 is that most people are nicer here than they were on live servers back in 1999.

You mean mature like calling people fags like a 14 year old?
First of all, Taxi has been nothing but helpful to the community. Second, why call "asses" "fags"? I am a homosexual, so where is the correlation?
I am no ass.
Maybe I like them though lol.

So you were the one pulling, and straight kept stealing aggro cuz SK thought DOTing a mob was too lowly a task for someone with 3 50s. Its all piecing together now.

The players on swgemu.com are far worse than the ones here. It's quite refreshing to be away there.
"Why are there so many ass hats on the server?"
Because this is the internet, which is basically just a huge contest to see who can be the biggest douche bag.
I would have to say that there is a large majority of people on this server are really nice but tend to be socially fucked up. Once and a while you will meet someone who is nice and will talk to you in a manner of self respect. There are people out there that are just complete dicks and totally mean to be that way on purpose because "Its the internet and there are no repercussions.

I agree and disagree with this thread. Yesterday, I had two random people that I had never met run up to me and the first word they sent in tell was "Bitch" followed by, "give me some buffs". I replied, "Do I know you?", their reply is "No" so I say, "Then Stfu" and I ignored them. This was really the first time anyone has been an ass to me about getting buffed.

I got called a faggot and a cunt for disagreeing with someone (I didn't take the word of a complete stranger with no explanation imagine that). This server certainly has a few more "gems" than I recall in 2000.
What is even more scary is that people that played this game back in 1999 were around 15-20... now they are 25-30? And they still disrespect and talk like that...not cool.

Lol I had the same problem the other day, was sitting at pyjzn (whatever you call her) and /dance emoted with one of the other five people sitting there. and I said this is such a boring camp! Cause you know, I'm trying to start a conversation here, I'm bored, they've got to be bored, and completely ignoring your competitors is kind of lame.
They replied "yea it is, want to make out?"
".... Uh, no."
"Stuck up bitch."
".... I don't do wood elf?"
Needless to say a bit longer of that conversation and that person ended up on ignore. But what happened to I dunno, common courtesy? Some kind of social interaction behavior that creates sustainable relationships?

The truth of the matter is that I think we've all been around WoW-type games too much, which attracts the instant-gratification kiddies. And unfortunately it wears off on you if you are around them long enough.
And, unfortunately, back in '99 the graphical MMO scene was still pretty new and EverQuest was at the forefront of it - we all still had our "MMO virginity" back then so to speak. There's no mystery left in this game or on this server because about 95% or more of the people that play here already have experienced all of the content on this server. I think perhaps it's harder to get immersed in the world than it was back then because we know what spells we get, where to level, and what the best drops are, thus keeping us more in an "in it for ourselves" mindset. Rather than the teamwork oriented mindset we had back then which crafted such great friendships and made the game what it was.
Hell, I was only 13 when I started playing back then. My brother was 17. The original crowd he gamed with still keeps in contact regularly on their own IRC server and in fact meets IRL on occasion to go camping and such because they grew that close.
*shrug* Obviously just my opinion. Take it for what you will.

I can see the reasoning behind that, but perhaps we can go beyond Wow. I think someone in an earlier post on this thread mentioned that people act like douchebags because there are little to no repercussions to their behavior.
This is common to every community online, and not just here. Before wow I saw plenty of griefing assholes in EQ, and DAOC. Wow became just another place for those people to go.
There were plenty of "gimme gimme" people in classic; Nothing new, just more prevalent here because of the increase in population.

Maybe its just me, but if I were in a lot of these situations I would probably be laughing instead of getting mad. If someone told me "buff me bitch", I would probably reply with something like "make me a sammich bitch", followed by giving them reso. If they end up doing /em makes Uuur a sammich, that's just a bonus :)
Some people have a harsh sense of humor, but don't take it the wrong way. If I'm making fun of the warrior for not being able to keep aggro, its not because he just wiped the group. Its because I'm confident enough in his skills and abilities that I feel comfortable giving him crap. Of course, it still helps to add a =) or =P to make sure people realize that you're joking. Obviously there are real assholes out there, but most of the people that I've met which come off as harsh end up being fun to play with.

I know this response is a little late but the level cap on Naggy and Vox doesn't happen right away with the release of Kunark. You will have time. Don't loose hope!

Some people have a harsh sense of humor...
A harsh sense of humor is what you might see exhibited in an ER or a combat zone.
A harsh sense of humor is a bunch of guys waiting to get processed into a stateside hospital cracking up when one of them politely informs a passing nurse that one of his lungs has collapsed, or making fun of a guy with a bullet in his ass, or cracking jokes about somebody with shrapnel in his testicles. That's a harsh sense of humor.
"Buff me, bitch" is not a harsh sense of humor because there's nothing harsh about an online video game, and because it's not funny to anyone above the age of 15 - the age when kids find it endlessly hilarious simply to say words that they wouldn't get away with around their parents, or to repeat the same line from South Park over and over again. Gosh, it never gets old.
The reaction has nothing to do with thin skin, it's just a choice the listener gets to make to not have to deal with something they got over 10 or 20 or 40years ago.
I've heard some actual humor in-game, but it's almost always because of the context; if it's not, it's just a cut and paste of some remark the particular player heard and thought was funny.
Now I will admit that there are contexts where addressing someone as 'bitch' might be funny, but simply saying 'buff me, bitch' to some stranger at a computer screen who might be a thousand miles away is not one of those contexts.
If you were to walk up to Brian Urlacher and say 'give me an autograph, bitch,' that might actually be funny.
