View Full Version : Favorite whiskey?

Judging by the personalities on here, I'm gonna guess we have more than a couple whiskey drinkers.
I myself am more of a bourbon guy, but really any whiskey is good, though I'm not a fan of scotch.
In fact, it's really the only booze i truly enjoy. I do like other drinks as well, but not nearly as much as a nice whiskey on the rocks.
In any case, list your favorite whiskey (or drink, if you're a pussy ;)). My favorite whiskey is crown royal, but like I said I'm partial to bourbon and really enjoy Jim Beam. On the rocks, of course. I'll also drink the bottom of the shelf shit if the mood strikes me (or i'm feeling cheap) like ten-high. Good stuff.
Have at it boys! I'm also partial to the dudes favorite drink, white russians. but they just dont do it like a nice brown glass of death :)

I'm much more of a rum guy, but I enjoy bourbon, Irish whiskey, and single-malt Scotch whisky (in different ways).
Bulleit is decent for the price as far as bourbon goes. I had some of that Ridgemont reserve, and it was good too. Other than these two, I haven't had much "good" bourbon to speak of, but I like it!
Irish is Jameson or Powers gold. I do not recommend buying more expensive Irish whiskey, as it is nearly impossible to get "the better grade" of artisan-level Irish in the USA, and most of any extra money you'd spend goes into a fancy label.
Good Scotch Whisky is ubiquitous, and your wallet will guide you as far as quality. It's almost universally true that the more you spend, the better it is. It is an important caveat that "good Scotch" ALWAYS means "single-malt;" a blended Scotch is ALWAYS rotgut, I don't care if you spent $800 on that bottle of johnny walker rainbow label, it's still a fucking blend and therefore crap.
I do not enjoy rye or unaged corn whiskey. Or Canadian whiskey. Even this crown royal black label i got for the dice bag (my real nerds feel me) tastes like fucking Kessler.

I heard the Japanese are coming with some good whiskey (real, "fast and hot" whiskey, not the mellow and smooth bourbon / american style) recently, but I bet it's expensive and I'm p. broke.

My favorite drink BTW is a well made Mai Tai (with juices, not syrups) or a mojito built around a dozen tenderly muddled chronic peppermint leaves.

My father was a violent alcoholic, so I learned from that and never picked up the heavy drinking act, so instead I learned how to appreciate it properly. I don't have an advanced knowledge by any means, but I know what tastes good to me! ;)

Well if you ever grow some hair on your ass, go to a quality mixologist and ask to A/B a normal gin against a high quality "new western" botanically balanced gin they'd recommend which doesn't hit you over the head with eleven inches of juniper dick.
I also hate gin. Having had your same experience, but with Tanqueray. Turns out, it wasn't gin I had an aversion to, but rather gin that doesn't have the juniper flavor balanced by other botanicals.

C'mon, there are so many glorious whiskeys out there.
If you prefer bourbon, try to get your hands on a bottle of Pappy Van Winkle (any age), it's worth the price. Otherwise some of the Parker's heritage bourbons are very delicious and well-received, though pricey. George T. Stagg bourbons are also reasonably price and incredible. For price-conscious consumers, one cannot go wrong with Evan Williams' Single Barrels, which tend to run in the $20-40 range and are great.
For Irish whiskeys, I tend to stick to the single pot still variety, such as Redbreast, but some of the blends such as Jameson and Tyrconnell are delightful.
Scotch would take an hour to dissect, especially with all the regional variants. Islay and Highland tend to be the most popular, with the "typical" peat-smoked malts dominating many of the characters. Single malt also tends to be the byword for quality, though many of the master blenders at Scottish distilleries have perfected their craft over decades. I prefer Ardbeg or Glenfarclas drams when reaching for Scotch.
One should also not discount Japanese or Tasmanian whiskeys, which are starting to come to prominence. Distilleries such as Hibiki and Hakushu in Japan are well rated, and Lark out of Tasmania has been experimenting with styles from all around the world.
Rye whiskey? One word: Sazerac. The 18 year old variety is reasonably priced and stellar. Pick up a bottle if you can find it.
And finally, Canadian. The smoother, lighter side of North America. Forty Creek is well-priced and delicious, and Caribou Crossing (if you can find it in the US) is a delightfully original Canadian representation of whiskey.
A small note on dram presentation as well: I always try new whiskeys one of three ways - neat, on the rocks, and with a splash of water. Water has the wonderful power of cutting the alcohol, and allowing the nose and palette to open up and really express its full character.

Jameson for all around drinking on the rocks or with water.
Johnnie Black for blended whisky
Talisker for single malt, but I do also enjoy a beefy speysider to go with a nice cigar.
I really don't like Bourbon anymore. I have drank Jameson for so long that it just tastes "wrong" to me. Too sweet.

in all seriousness, ive always found the best cure for a hangover to just be water. As long as you're drinking water the night you're drinking, followed up by a glass when you wake up you're fine.
Probably had close to 20 shots last night (i dont know exactly, because i just pour glasses of whiskey over ice, never take shots), but i forgot to drink water. I never get hangovers because I drink plenty of water with my booze :)

My normal go to whisky when I drink at home. Smokey and sweet at the same time, the subtle hint of peat and honey really comes through. Usually will cut a 3-4 oz glass with about an ounce of water to bring out the taste. For the price it really can't be beat - liquor store in town has it at $43 a bottle. In my opinion it easily stacks up to and exceeds the shit Johnny Walker peddles as Blue for $150+ a bottle.
If you're looking for a cheaper alternative make sure you try The Famous Grouse. At $22 a bottle the price is beyond compare; although its a blend it is a nice, smooth blend featuring Macallan and Highland Park among others.

The only thing better than coffee with whiskey in it is coffee with Jameson in it while you're in Dublin after the bars close and some nice irish folks invite you into their speakeasy where there are half a dozen or more people playing music and everyone is drinking coffee with jameson. ;)
