View Full Version : I posted something informative about MMO's

And it was deleted! Why?
MMO's are plagued with UI clutter far far to many buttons. Boxes and bars. Screenshots of EQ2, WoW, Eve, all I see is buttons and bars.
EQ classic was the best 1-2 hot bars tops and you could play the game with 1 or 2 chatboxes.
Whats up with 8 plus hotbars, raid UI's, heal UI's, 3-4 chatboxes. Rows of item boxes. Maps, radars. All the "flashing alerts everywhere".
IMO Minecrafts UI is the ideal to strive towards ;p 1 hotbar an attack and block option. It is the macintosh of fantasy gaming UI's. All other functionallity can be added through items or equipable spells/scrolls etc.
Please do not censor this incase any young budding MMO developpers are trolling RnF today. They must know!

customizable chatbox are indeed a neccecity, but it seems people are desiging whimsically instead of around a "concept".
Oh we'll just throw another button on for each expac and every 10 levels.
Rather then saying "this is how a character will play and this is the interface we need to support it" and sticking with that concept.

And yeah I still think UI's should remain flexible and allow people to add on to them. So I'm not trolling for the minimalist approach 100%. Just mad because its such a pain to play MMo's without an F16 cockpits worth of information slamming covering up the pixels.

Boo i even like how minecraft implemented the map =p you have to look at it on screen when you bring it up and it actually cartographs were you were.
***I SWEAR to god i'm posting no more until an actual informative reply or real troll (other then STFU) i just cant abide the no edit feature in RnF

OP does troll in RnF and occasionaly a few one liners vs other trolls in other forum sections. But I was being serious with this post. Its not a gripe about classic vs titanium vs velious.
I like the idea that in minecraft for example you have to actually hold your compass.
I am just advocating realism and minimalism in MMO design and wondering what people think.
I guess I really may truly be 1% of the population when it comes to my tastes in huds. Thats ok... just really suprised so far no one likes a "light hud" with most of the information in the 3d environment or memorized or tied to specific objects. If a really good classic UI was an option I would try that, otherwise I probably would stick with a velious UI. I use titanium with 2 hotbars and 1 open window and the rest minimized. I really do not need to see my damage rolls or /ooc so that goes to a minimized window. In EQ spell resists and lands are the most critical chat information other then group/shout/raid/guildsay.

If you have ever played wow, especially the pvp, theres a lot more to it than pressing just auto attack and casting 1 or 2 spells. Id use a minimum of 3 full bars of spells in an arena and sometimes even more depending on the class combos and situations.

Bah and when I play wow and heal and EQ and heal I use /assist and target macros' to monitor health, not so easy in wow now, and the new raid UI's I would say are essential. But that does not mean you could not design a game that worked around the princeple of target cycling and checking health that way. As long as it was easily designed into the general interface and planned for in the encounter strategies.

Yeah this turned me off about wow, I had my 4 hotbars with barkeeper or whatever it as and used healbot until blizzards raid UI got sufficient.

I enjoyed it, it was fast paced and you had to know what was going on and be able to counter spells being cast in a split second in order to actually do good in the arenas.

I know what your talking about and I think 8 or so hotkeys could support a system that was a comprise. My bigger rant comes with EQ2 were I felt like i had to click 16 buttons that all effected the fight in 1% of a way.
I actually liked the "combos" and interupts in wow, they did good, and the interupts in vanguard were good too. Having one ability proc other abilities or whatever made the game more interesting.
Whats the difference if you have to click 14 buttons to do what 1 button should be doing though? Just more clicking and time consumed. No strategy added.
