Me, me, me-- spent most of my gaming in Ravenloft.

played a little bit of many games. All four editions of D&D at some point (our DM preferred first over anything else after it, and when I played third was the new one). Deadlands. the DM's own custom game which was bad ass and sci fi.
Currently GM a GURPS game when I get the chance.

Why is this in R&F? because the asshats of the forum are going to come harass us? this IS pretty much the WORST forum I've been on lately for douchebaggery, but still.

Yep, been playing since the mid 80's. Still have a pretty sizeable collection of books also though i stopped keeping up post 3rd edition. I always was a 2nd edition guy.
I miss spelljammer....
My current mousepad is my original Monster manual, 1977.

I actually own a 100-sided die.
Funny enough it came from a National Geographic board game but I used to use it when playing White Wolf stuff back in the day.

I DM a weekly DnD 4e session. The sessions have been going on for ~ 5 years now. Started with Age of Worms (DnD 3.5) and when we fnished that entire campaign we switched to 4e and I've been running a converted Temple of Elemental Evil -> Against the Giants campaign.
We play using Fantasy Grounds virtual tabletop software and Ventrillo.

Fantasy Grounds is really pretty good. I have used it and Vent for 3.5E sessions a few times. We are really picky about who we game with, so we usually just wait to play when people are in town, or use Fantasy Grounds.

Reeeeealy? Tell me more. Ive gotten out of gaming because of travel time and whatnot, ive been looking at their website and it looks interesting.
How easy is it to find groups at large who 1. dont suck and RP like 14 year olds 2. use this software?

Well, I really have never tried to find a group besides the core group that I've played with over the last 11 years or so. We started in high school and only play maybe 8 times per year or so, but I absolutely recommend buying the FG software. If you are DMing, you'll have to do a good bit more prep work at first, but if you get into it, you will start to find a lot of shortcuts. You can import almost anything you want when it comes to rule books and maps, etc. We play 3.5E because we think its already as close as we want to perfection. I just don't see the big deal with 4th edition, but there are probably books to import for that, as well.

I kinda figured there were very few of us... I haven't played D&D in years. Wish i still had the Black Robe, dice, manuals, tons and tons of books. I must say there must be some kinda Role Playing Societies out there somewhere. I think it be fun to do a weekend sometime. I've often thought of tracking down old college buddies and do a campaign :)
I played vampire:the masquerade and DnD.
We had a great storyteller of a DM who would prepare acts with specific music for each, and it was more akin to improvised theater than just spreadsheeting. Was kind of intimidated the first time i saw 12 people do that, you dont wanna suck when you see them put that much into it.
Dranked a bit and smoked weed, if we smoked too much and people were getting a bit too high and not talkin alot, DM would slap his book closed and then we would just house party it for the rest of the nite. Good times.

The software is pretty easy to use, although it's also very customizable so if you like that sort of thing, you can get as complex with it as you want.
It comes with both a 3.5 and 4e ruleset out of the box. The 3.5 ruleset includes all the OGL rules, the 4e ruleset has no 'rules' but the player sheets etc are designed with 4e in mind. You can obtain modules for all of the 4e rulebooks if you look around the net, or you can use Tenian's parser to create your own from a DDI subscription.
To your first question, every time we've had an opening for my campaign, a simple post to the FG forums has always yielded ~10 responses and for the most part everyone we've encountered this way has been a solid addition to the group. There was one guy who played for a few sessions then disappeared without a word, not sure if he didn't like our play-style or if something else happened, but even he wasn't a dick or anything during the actual game :)
I've tried a few virtual tabletops over the years, and I strongly recommend Fantasy Grounds, it's got a great mod community and strong developer support, and a pretty active user community as well.

I've been playing with a steady group for the past 17 years. Mostly DnD, but lately we've moved onto some of the RIFTS games.

^.^ I game with Kevin every now and then. One of my group was interning for Palladium for awhile, so we all got to know the staff. It's nice living a few miles from a Gaming Company.

I have been playing and DM withn the same basic core group for over 20 eyars now. but recently my son has picked up the torch as I am just not finding it in me to keep going.
Takes a lot to write and run a good campaign and I just do not have the time

Heh, no kidding Theldios. The most recent DnD campaign I created currently consists of 65 Folders full of maps and charts, including tabletop maps (My first ever campaign with a full set of them). Two binders full of storyline, and from how my group has been progressing through it (Once a week, two weeks a month as we go back and forth with a RIFTS campaign) we think it's going to last another two years, which is about what it took to write. o.o
I don't think I'll have it in me to ever write another one.

thats kind of where i am at over the past 20 or so years i have written what I have been told some awesome campaigns but they take a ton of time and preparation. i just do not have it in me to keep going. At my age and spot in my career I do not have the time and energy to keep writing stuff. But i also get the constant "will you please run something so and so is getting very boring and we like yor style" I think it is more of they are used to my style then like but het take em however you can get em.
I did find for a while there in the late 80's - mid 90's that dungeon magazine was a great resource for side runs and I used it a lot(unbeknowst to my players) but since they went electronic only they have grown rather stale.
Oh well I have rattled on enough
Take it easy and don't touch my bone white 20 siders!

Yeah Thel. 10 years ago I could use Dragon Magazine, or even some Pre-Fab'd dungeons just by keeping the Manual for them in my binder out of sight. But these days... everyone knows every single scenario because they read them online before I even get to them. People just want my campaigns, but they don't really get how much work they are!

I havent DMd in awhile, but I did for almost 20 years straight. Ive never been a PC actually, always the DM...
I find it far easier to just lay out the world then wing the details. Ill note take only after the idea has been played out. Its convient because all it takes is to make your game or world to linear or tight, and one jack ass player to off the wrong person of whatnot and everything stalls without major DM tweaking, cheating, or the "You cant do that!" gimmicks to stop player free action.
By flowing loosely through a game I can keep it completely open to whatever courses i might suddenly decide on, the players know they have freedom of action at all times (even if its to their detriment, which is more fun for me) and im saved years of work from having to write, map and create insanely detailed filler material that may or may not be used.
Thats just me and my style though, everyone is different.

Part of the reason my campaign currently has so many folders, is because I've already factored such things into it. "You can't do that!" Gimmicks don't fly with me. If the players decide they want to kill off a random important npc, and actually manage to kill it, things adjust accordingly.
I would love to be able to run a 'fly by the seat of my pants' campaign, but my players have come to expect a certain level from me, and get let down if I can't deliver it.
And as for the 'may or may not be used' stuff. Yeah... not with these guys. "You walk by a tree" "Can I cut the tree down?" "I wanna climb it!" "If we move the tree, is there a hole under it for a dungeon?" "Quick! Get the mage! Burn down the tree!" o.o I love my gaming group.
