I know we got rid of so many retards in the OOC nerf, but I miss being able to help people.
It was a great tool for random acts of kindness. I could hear about a group wiping in Unrest or HHK and help them out with some rezzes or hand out a few items in my bank to some newbies auctioning to buy a fine steel weapon. I spent a lot of late nights helping people and made some great acquaintances because of it.
I could also help people out with rezzes and advertise that my monk was LFG. Now if I want to level on my monk I have to be on the character. I don't mind being on my monk, but I do wish I could at least give people a hand with all the time I waste LFG. It makes me feel selfish.
I can already see people tripping over themselves to tell me that global OOC wasn't classic and post pictures of crying memes, so have at it.

Agreed.
But bro just think about it for a second man, sitting in EC tunnel selling items is like SO AWESOME, what more can you like ask for.
That's clearly more awesomeness then having a global community.
ROCK ON
I only help ogres & trolls anyway so no matter, they can always be found in either EC, oasis or the swamps.
<-- Horrible racialist!

I appreciate you helping people. I just hope you realize that a big chunk of them will never return the favor, and will more than likely grief you in the future, having long forgotten about your kindness.
But none of that matters to you, and that's why I like folks like you so much. I envy your selflessness.

That's just them wood elves and half-elves.
I won't have anything to do with them!

I still remember the people that helped me get my character started back when in 2000 when I started playing eq. Not everyone forgets.

There's nothing preventing people from logging onto the IRC channel and having the same conversations and global requests for help that you used the old global OOC channel for. We all can still do this. All it takes is people's willingness to keep an IRC window going in the background...

This was pretty much my attitude for a while. Then I was reminded that while I play EQ in maximized Windowed mode on my primary monitor and have IRC on the secondary screen, not everyone has the ability to have an adequate multitasking setup. I see people running IRC on backup computers, even mobile phones, but some people really can't simultaneously play while viewing IRC.
Nonetheless, I do hope IRC picks up.
Also, it would be nice to have a hosted WebIRC that automatically connects people to the appropriate server and channel. While my IRC client of choice (XChat) is wonderfully noobtastic, having something that people can simply click from the front page would be really nice. Most web IRC clients look like garbage, but I think Tiramisu looks particularly polished.

IRC isn't classic and should be nerfed!

IRC has been around as long as the Internet- even longer really, on BBS's.
There may not have been an "official" IRC channel for EQ, but I'm sure there were lots of them going.

Now I feel a little stupid, let me clarify that :p
Chat systems LIKE IRC were around before the Internet. IRC was almost certainly built directly from one of them. Regardless, around long before EQ. I used to waste just as much time on IRC back in the early 90s as I ever did on EQ a decade later.

BoTS definitely had one going 24/7 during classic.

I voted no because of the usefulness of global and the fact that YOU CAN TURN IT OFF ANYTIME... but since the change I actually felt that warm fuzzy feeling when going through ec again and people seem to use anon/role less and tells can be used to find groups, ports, rezzes etc. I'd say the mods proved they know what's best better then we do. The only real downside I see now is actual noobs in search of help may give up early on with no easily accessable communication channel thanks to the adhd of todays games. But if that's the case, so be it. long live classic eq.

I wonder how long it will take me to get bored sitting in guk at 4am and stop logging in. Ah well for now the only annoyance is way more "omgz rez me" tells.
