Yeah, Unfortunately, Durison was never the greatest judge of character. You did have your two-three weeks of glory in Dark Ascension, I'm told. I'm not quite old school enough to have witnessed it first hand.

I have to agree abit here about the bad players part, not bad as in playing the game but bad as a person by screwing / deserting their guildmate in the end. I mean if u want to take Loke for example, he left IB at the time and join DA as a officer, but from what i remember he kind of stayed pro IB whilst in DA (Although he says his just trying to reach common grounds) but i felt like there was a hidden agenda thus was removed as a officer and i believe he left on his own? back to IB, case in point.

Then the sadness started and the shitbags from DA split up and joined TMO and IB and made it worse over all. Dealing with both those guilds before Kunark was pure bullshit. Divinity, Transendence, VD, TMO couldn't go a day without some bs coming from a DA or TR/IB member.

And how anyone could follow Durison or much of their leadership then allow him to be Co-leader of TMO is simply amazing. I was pretty annoyed with a good handful of friends in TMO who just sat back and took that crap. Hell even Alarti and I got along for a time period and he even asked me to join TMO. Even VD dealing with most of IB ( some people were pretty cool, just like in DA) was just as bad on some levels.

I could never get over Nizzar the monotone talking computer with no emotion or personal connection in vent. Then having Ledzepp cry over loot from Gorglask and pleaded with me so he could have the back-straps. I felt so bad for him, I decided why not this dude sounds like he's about to kill himself, it was that bad. Add that in with having to listen to Dalthab in vent and his condescending tone. As soon as he would log in during DA/VD and IB/VD co raids I would just afk. This guy can be summed up by this clip

Yeah they were there, they didn't do too much though, only notable thing I recall was that they got the first Talendor/Sev kills. They didn't seem like very bad peeps to get along with though. RoI on the other hand, I don't know how anyone could stand being in that guild for more than a month without having a serious pixel-addiction problem. What a bunch of dicks, the whole lot of them.

It's really touch and go with people from guilds like that. Pixel lust all time high, sure. But that's their choice. As far as them all being dicks, it's more of a guild reputation thing, where as if you were to get to know the people on a more personal level it isn't like that at all. I remember 3 things from combine that still really stick out to me.
1) Raiding poSky on 4th of July.
2) Dominos just came out with the 5x5x5 deal. Ate real poorly for 8 weeks!
3) Coordinating sleeping schedules with group members.

It's a guild leadership's duty to treat it's members with respect, the problem was that their entire mentality was that the members were tools and means to an end and nothing more. Of the five raiding guilds that I had been a member of, RoI was the only one that operated in such a way.

I don't give a fuck if it was successful in practice when they took over that server, it didn't make the bulk of them any less assholes, the practices of the Third Reich were pretty damn successful as well when they took over that continent.

My only real fond memory of that server was watching the average level of the members of FoH drop by 2 when they zerged Trak 40 times before finally downing him.

- As a guild setting the precedent of treating members the same as any other random by paying them plat for a service is shady as it takes away any sense of special camaraderie
- I never said dkp was acceptable, but understandable since you atleast have to be in the guild to acquire that reward whereas plat you do not have to be tagged (your plat offers to anyone who gets FTE or tracks for your guild winning etc. troll posts or not)

Assisting the guild without any form of compensation is morally commendable, not morally obligatory. Further, trackers are not being paid plat for their services in platinum, they are being paid a bonus should their efforts result in a kill. Platinum is treated as an incentive because the guild bank does not possess sufficient funds to fully compensate every member's needs and wants. Thus, we ration the money out in a proper and non-exhausting way. Also, we cannot use non-TMO trackers for security reasons; this completely eliminates the parallel you have drawn between purchasing services from the public at large and purchasing it from the membership.

Let's think about the situation economically. If a guild member, on their own time, desires to camp an item for a twink they generally have a choice: camp on their own for money, or assist the guild without compensation. What then, is a player with limited online time to do? Incentivizing tracking combines both options into a mutually beneficial arrangement. Your first point fails to recognize the principle above that a player might not always be in a position to assist their guild. Imagine if a player has 10 hours a week to play the game. If he assists his guild for 9 hours, would the 10th hour be selfish or, as you put it, "pathetic," if he chose to camp for a twink item in that last hour?

Your second notion assumes that incentives destroy a sense of camaraderie. That it somehow cannot exist or flourish in the face of monetary rewards. I submit that this is an invalid proposition. I still enjoyed the company of my friends last Thursday just as much as I otherwise could have at the Trak FTE sock fest, and I certainly competed to get FTE to win some money. I find it preposterous to say that my seeking a bonus somehow detracted from the relationship I have with my guildmates.

Thirdly, how is DKP understandable yet not acceptable for tracking purposes? Raid attendance and tracking are two sides of the same coin. Both are processes engaged in to acquire high-end gear. Further, platinum can be used to acquire such gear. In a sense, DKP, gear, and platinum are fairly fungible as each resource can be fairly traded for adequate compensation in the forum of one of the other two resources. It is preposterous to suggest that such related and relatively liquid assets carry with them different ethical distinctions.

Finally, many members of TMO do contribute greatly without any expectation of reward. However, even the best of us can be difficult to motivate when Trakanon is in window and untracked at 3:30 A.M. on a week night.
