View Full Version : Can a person of Islamic faith peacefully coexist with someone of another faith?

I have posed this qestion to people of all three religions, "Yes or no, can you peacefully coexist with a person that practices a different religion than you do?"
Most Christians always answer with a simple direct "Yes"
Most Jews always answer with a simple direct "Yes"
Nearly every Muslims answers with a "Yes, but (insert various stuff here)" It's like they cannot simply answer the question yes or no.
I have visited many Christian/Judaism/Islam debates and meetings here in Dallas over the past few years. Meet and greet sort of things. They are usually forums where you can meet/speak/debate with others that are a different religion than you in a controlled environment. The idea is to spark coexistance I suppose.
I am finding it rather disturbing that people of the islamic faith cannot coexist with people of other faith. Does this mean that they are all radical, but some more vocal than others?
I pose this in R&F not to stir thing up btw. I figured this was the safest place to post it, and also notice there are more people here than the other forums. I am very interested in other opinions on this if you have them. I'm sure it will get to be a flame fest in a bit on this - but would love to hear others insight/opinion on it too. Call me curious!

Your anecdotal experience totally embodies the feelings of hundreds of millions of Muslims bro. You're not applying to the general what is true of the specific at all.

I get that bro. I know my findings are in no way scientific nor reflective of the millions out there. However, based on my small samplig should I not have at least one? Just makes me wonder I suppose.

Well.. If you asked a hundred Irish people whether or not they can coexist with English people, I'm sure you'd get at least a few "Yes but" 's.
Maybe there's a fucking reason?

muslims are at a different point in their religion's chronology. both judaism and christianity have had a militant past. both religions have had a time and place where, if you asked that question, the answer from both would generally be that their obligation to spread and defend their religion (forcibly, if necessary) outstrips any call to live peacefully. in the case of christianity, this wasn't even really that long ago.
does that justify the rhetoric? no, of course not. but please understand that at some point in time pretty much every religion has been completely batshit insane in the exact same way (looking at you too buddhism) and the general trend is toward moderation over time.

Also, I can guarantee you that many christians - given the right set and setting (where they feel their bigotry would not be exposed) would give you some yes buts.
Also, ask Israeli nationals whether or not they can peacefully exist with Palestinians, who's homes they stole. BONUS FOLLOWUP QUESTION, why the apartheid?

It's really sad that this is true. It's sad because each of these religions have great stories that can guide people to be better. However when people start to put these stories "in context," the messages get distorted by that person, and what you end up with is people who think Jesus would be for free market capitalism.
Lulz.

Not that anyone whose mind is firmly decided due to fox news telling them what to think will listen but...
I've spent a lot of time among various cultures and Islamic ones have tended to be nicer, generous and more welcoming to strangers than any others. At least in Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Turkey at any rate.
You wanna find the biggest percentage of jerks? I've always found em in supposedly Christian cultures. Best places ever for greed, suspicion and general meanness to fellow man.

I have an Islamic uncle that was bron in Jordan, and he celebrates Christmas and stuff with the rest of my family. So that's enough for me, I don't know about for you.

just so the neanderthals that glazed over it have another chance to read it
jews are selfish xenophobes. dunno why people focus on the christianity / islam when jews are pretty much the kernel of any religious dispute.

guess what, every adherent to every religion ever will tell you this.
Its hard to like someone that hates you, that's why Christianity rules.
