Following Glitch's post a few days ago, someone just recommended this FFVI hack that was recently completed to me:
http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/707/
(Direct download: http://www.romhacking.net/download/hacks/707/)
Supposedly the new ultimate in FFVI difficulty hacks.
Just arrived at Figaro Castle, Locke level 6 Terra level 5. Zero game overs. Not too bad yet, but supposedly it gets insane.
Come at me Kefka.

Mount Koltz absolutely bent me over and violated my anal cavity.
Escaped with the Locke weapon and Atlas Armlet, however. Haven't ran from any fights either. Tuskers are brutal, you will want to level grind before heading in. Edgar 6, Locke 7, Terra 6.
Will continue tomorrow.

Ultros thrashed.
Hint: He's mega weak until he casts Cure 3 & Regen, after that he starts doing Aqua Rake, if you're doing enough damage he should only get one off. Save enough MP for a fire or two at the end, a couple Aqua Rakes will fuck your shit up.
Choose a scenario, kupo!

since we're on the topic, i am starting to play thru ff6 myself (normal mode, i have yet to beat it) and I just got the espers from the ghost town. I'm noticing an annoying "bug" but I doubt it's an actual bug;
When I use Celes, she will randomly lose 10-20 MP per battle, even when I don't use any magic or espers. anyone have any idea why this happens?

I never take the Rune Edge because if you leave the chest untouched it turns into a Ribbon later in the game.

You can't in this version.
Mardur

The Lete River trick depends on Banon's Health ability which essentially fully heals your entire party. In this hack, Banon doesn't have Health (he only has Fight and Item). He's equipped with a Heal Rod or whatever that weapon is that heals instead of does damage. So instead of being able to fully heal your entire party, he can only heal one member for ~32 damage. Also, the monsters are much much more difficult, so you can't even keep up on damage with that alone, you still need to rely on the save points and Terra's Cure spell to keep up on damage. At least I did, all my characters were level 10 at this point which may have been a little low, but I still got through okay.
Sabin's scenario however is absolutely kicking my ass.

save states
why bother playing a difficulty rom hack if you aren't restricting the use of save states?
Mardur
10-24-2011, 02:27 PM
Considering this can only be played on an emulator, I'm assuming it's considered that save states will be used. I don't abuse them, but in the case of Shadow leaving your party permanently, I damn well will use them. I'm 100% certain the Phantom Train is designed with having Shadow in your party. The only way to keep Shadow for sure, is to make sure he's dead until the Phantom Train. Considering how difficult the Phantom Forest is, you're not going to want to keep him dead. Especially considering it's pretty necessary to grind levels at the recovery spring, will will revive Shadow every time you use it.
Again, I'm not abusing save states by reloading every battle that doesn't go 100% perfectly, but if you can beat this hack without save states I bow to your might.

EZ.
Specter: NOT EZ. Besides being grossly over-leveled, there's one way and one way only to beat this encounter, and even then the RNG can screw you. This thing can do over 1000 damage to your entire party (I grinded to 16 and had just over 350) so if you don't use save states... be prepared to lose a lot of time trying to beat it. It's optional, but the reward is awesome:

Yousa broke ass *****? Use Reiker's Road to Riches trick:
Obtain the HealthRing: Send 5 letters from Mobliz (requires 2500 gold, sell an elixir if you can't afford that). Talk to the bedridden guy and you'll get the HealthRing. It rules.
This is during the war on Narshe in the snowfields. Make sure one of your groups only has Locke (not required but makes this faster). Clear all the soldiers until only the Rider and Kefka are left. Equip Locke with the HealthRing. Run him down and engage the Rider and steal his SteelShield (common) or SteelHelm (rare). If you die, you just respawn with 1 hp, and the HealthRing will get you back up to max by the time it takes you to walk back down to the Rider.
Do this as many times as you can before getting bored, equip the Steel equipment and sell off the extras. Don't bother with Kefka, he doesn't have anything to steal.

You have to grind a bunch just to get through it. Nothing is really stopping you besides time; levels require a lot more exp and monsters give a lot less exp compared to the original.
My characters range 11-17 just after Narshe war (Terra freak out part) which is pretty normal for a non-hacked version of the game, really. And that was with a bunch of grinding before Mount Koltz and in the Phantom Forest. But nothing extreme. I want to keep the game challenging by not over-leveling, I only grind when I'm getting my ass handed to me.
The only boss so far that's required more than one attempt for me has been Rizopas. That thing is a dick.

Doubt it, haven't ever played a difficulty hack that allowed it. But I don't have magic yet.
Edgar is so emasculated in this version... I chose him for the Terra recovery program but then discovered I still can't buy useful tools (Noise, Bio, Flash). AutoCrossbow and Drill just aren't getting the job done.

Shadow was good in the early game because of Throw, but in this hack you won't really have the money for Shurikens. I didn't really care for him in World of Ruin because his gear selection was meh. But in this hack his Evade is pretty super + Interceptor triggers a ton.

If you can survive long enough, Sabin's Pummel puts Countdown on the enemy and they'll eventually die. That's how I kill stuff with insane HP / defense.

3 places I've had to grind so far:
Before Mount Koltz (using Duncan's house to rest)
Phantom Forest (using restorative spring)
Vector (using the lady that fully heals you)
Probably should have grinded more at Vector before heading into IMRF because it's ridiculously hard. All the enemies have astronomically high defense like in the original game. The difference is that magic attacks are so hard to come by in this hack. No Flash. Fire Dance is physical. Magic spells are nerfed and cost more MP. The only thing I can rely on to kill stuff is Pummel condemn (takes awhile) or Gau (completely random). Probably going to end up running from everything and hoping Ifrit / Shiva & Number 024 don't absolutely destroy me.

Nah, I killed one to make them appear on the Veldt. Killed one of every monster type and then ran from everything else.
Ifrit / Shiva was no problem. Number 024 is a fucking badass and I have no idea how I'm going to beat him.

7000 HP. Essentially immune to physical attacks and any type of status I've tried. Changes weaknesses frequently so magic is tough to land, especially Rage. He gets multiple turns to mine and casts shit like Quake and Magnitude8.

I got to Ultros with like 8 seconds left.
Also I hacked into the hack and Number 024 will die if he runs out of his 7500 MP. I wonder how many hours of gameplay that would take...
Speed: 200. Starts with auto-haste. Immune to everything.
If weak to fire he uses Ice 2 and Cold Dust.
If weak to ice he uses Fire 2 and Fire Ball.
If weak to bolt he uses Tsunami and Overflow (muddles).
If weak to poison he uses Cure 2, Heal Force, and Overflow.
If weak to wind he uses Quake and Magnitude 8.
If weak to pearl he uses Overflow and Poison and Bio.
If weak to earth he uses Windslash and Overflow.
If weak to water he uses Diffuser and Bolt 2.
I just... I mean... my god.

And now for the strategy. Don't read if you want to figure it out yourself.
Maximize Locke's magic power, cover everyone else in Deflectors and magic defense / evade. Don't equip the Gorgonic in case you get confused. Equip Locke with the Kikuichi. Summon Kirin and put Safe up on everyone. Gau Rage = Rhobite. Bserk Locke. Fast forward / watch a movie / smoke a bowl until Number 028 runs out of MP. Masturbate to the death animation.
Levels (Locke and Celes leveled up from Number 028 exp):

You don't necessarily need Gau, but his Rhobite rage will add some extra healing. He is, however, super useful on Ifrit as Dark Side (Ice 2) rage will do 800 damage a round. I didn't even get to see Shiva. Fastest boss fight I've had yet on this ROM.
But now I'm struggling on Mag Roaders, so I'm taking another break. Getting the feeling that I'm too low level when enemy attacks are doing 1/2 my max hp.

for early money I found a nice little farm spot (not useful to you) - when you're infiltrating south figaro, answer the wrong password to get kicked a few feet back to where you started. You are then forced to steal the clothes from the merchant again. Each time you rob the merchant you steal a helmet worth ~250.
Beats the thousand gil total I've made in getting up to that point.
Mardur
10-27-2011, 01:58 PM
Also, you're going to want Gau for the Cranes. They're weak to water so an Anguiform Tsunami does about 600-700ish to each, which is by far the best attack you can make considering there's not much that hits the entire screen at this point. Focus the right one down with Bolt spells, you'll probably not have Fire at this point to exploit the left one.
Number 128 is nothing. Haste (Carbunkl) + Regen (Kirin) will outdamage whatever he can do, it's an endurance fight. Thought I was gonna run out of minecart track before he died though...
Hopefully Baskervors and Chimeras have fatty steals like in the original to sell.
Off to grab Mog, hopefully he's awesome.

Play the mod fgt.
Mog / Gau, the two strongest WoB characters in the original are even better in this hack. Gau is essentially the same (although the Rages are very different), but all other chars are weaker. Mog is even better (!!!) because he doesn't stumble and all of his dances are fucking super powerful.
Mog is easily my best char now, Forest Suite is fucking Nuts. Options are:
1) 250ish heal to entire party
2) 150ish damage to every enemy
3) 250ish heal + remedy to entire party
4) 300ish damage to every enemy
So fucking OP... and he doesn't stumble.

Goddamn you. I have never in my life been tempted in the least to download an emulator or any ROM.... until now. This is easily my favorite game of all time and I've beaten it at least 20 times start to finish.
I am so sad that Edgar is a total pussy in this version. He was always my party leader because his Tools wreck the early game and his equipment selection late game is the best (Atma Weapon/Illumina+Genji Glove/Offering rapemachine). I always hated Gau with a passion and hated Mog almost equally, so this will force me to spend more time with characters I neglected. I like that Setzer is reworked too, I never used him much; since I didn't cheat, Slot was totally useless for me.
This hack makes me hard while I'm playing it. I died in the first pincer guard fight because I had no idea Xfer killed everyone on the screen including you. Whelk one-shotted Terra any time it targetted her. I'm in love.
Mardur
10-28-2011, 12:24 AM
Edgar's not really a pussy per se it's just that his tools aren't complete rape mode like they were. You can still set him up as a physical attacker and use Fight.
But I still only have the same 2 tools available immediately in Figaro, so whenever the hell I find new tools he may get better.
Same with Sabin, his Blitzes are way tuned down (although Mantra at level 26 is really good, although Mog's forest dance heal is a bit better).
You're not necessarily forced into using Gau/Mog... but these characters have always been the best in the WoB since they require a bit more work than other characters to gain power. Gau's attacks are a bit random and sort of a pain in the ass to obtain, so I can sorta see why he's so good. But I think Mog was made too powerful in this hack by removing his chance to stumble, considering anything he does is going to be good (the worst being a wasted turn if you're full HP and he does a heal). Not being able to use Marvel Shoes somewhat balances it out, but I'm not getting rid of him or Gau before the World of Ruin (when access to powerful gear and magic starts making characters like Terra, Celes, Relm, etc. way more powerful than they are in the World of Balance).
I'm assuming Edgar will become a powerhouse in World of Ruin when he gains access to his best gear.

You have to answer every question correctly, beat the special forces in under 2 minutes, and talk to 21/24 guards (the ones that fight you are required, 1 MegaArmor and 3 Commandos I think).
Mardur
10-28-2011, 02:33 PM
Now that I'm approaching the World of Ruin, I took a look at the Readme:
There is a specific way the World of Ruin is meant to be played: Run from every monster to get all the heroes back, but don't get the chests until you can kill the monsters, and then fight monsters until you can beat Kefka. The problem is that I didn't want the heroes to level up before you get other characters back (screwing esper stat progression). So all of the bosses which must be defeated to get heroes are all the same difficulty, but the monsters and treasures around them are increasingly better. This allows gamers to play with whichever hero they want, and still have areas with increasing difficulty. There is one chest you must open regardless of your level---the one holding "Striker", South of the switched passage in the Cave on the Veldt.
Also this:
I encourage the use of fast-forward, & save-states with your emulator, and don't forget that Znes can rewind as well, which can allow you to test things easily or just never die, if you want to make things really easy.

It's not there. He's not terribly difficult, you just have to be smart about when you use Runic.
I forgot to strip equipment from Terra and Edgar so I had basically nothing to put on Locke and Celes except a couple of MithrilBlades I stole in South Figaro. Taking out TunnlArmr 18 hp at a time was a long process. Only took 3 attempts, had bad luck on the second one (he kept using that damn drill attack instead of casting).
Most of the seemingly-hard boss fights so far seem to have a trick you can utilize to make it simpler, but then again I only just beat the Narshe war. Liberal use of Scan (Mithril Rods from ghosts in the phantom forest cast it) makes a big difference; once I saw that the Specter had 6000 hp I immediately knew how to beat it, and Rizopas having only 42 was similarly telling.

Oh and knowing how the battle timer works gives you a small edge that can make some impossible fights much more doable. Let Cyan's SwdTech charge up during the animation for Sabin's Fire Dance, and you'll keep enemies from using that time to charge up their own ATB gauge for more attacks. Also try not to use long-animation moves (like Fire Dance) first in any situation where your whole party has full gauges, such as pre-emptive fights.

Most likely referring to Elite Fantasy 3 the ROM hack that I did but was lost to a hard drive failure. This is a different hack.
My hack wasn't quite as... in-depth as this one. I didn't touch stat progression, instead I just removed all level up bonuses and spells from Espers (essentially making them useful only for their summon). I put spells on equipment so that different characters had different sets of spells. And I think I did a bit of a better job with the actual monster/boss changes but that's obviously imo.
I like this hack, but what bothers me is that random monster encounters are more challenging than the bosses. Very few bosses are actually challenging, only Dadaluma and Number 028 (boss after Ifrit/Shiva). A lot of bosses like Flame Eater, Atma Weapon etc can't cause a whole lot of significant ruckus, but they just have tons of HP/defense. Kinda like if Vex Thal was patched into FF VI.
The World of Ruin bosses I've fought so far have been complete push overs. The rest of the game completely rapes my face, because apparently I'm supposed to be 20 levels higher or something (based on that thread that was posted where the dude recommends level 45 for Tritoch).

Depends on what you're raging, obviously. Most of the best early Rages (Anguiform, Rider, etc) have both physical and magic based attacks, so you may want to go for a hybrid setup (later end gear is nice for this, like the Sensei Armor and Hero Ring). Usually the magic-based attack is best so you may put a preference on magic power and earrings, especially if you're hitting a weakness.
If you're using something like Over-Mind then you can just pump up his defense as you're just relying on petrification.

I haven't found any armor he can use that defends worth a damn so it's been all-out MPower for now. Using Rhinotaur rage a lot in the Magitek facility for dat GigaVolt, it's been handy. I didn't go back and get his Serpent Trench monster rages, would be nice to have Anguiform.

You fucked something up. There's 93 possible points and you need 90-93 to get all the rewards. The only thing you can skimp on is not talking to 3 soldiers, which doesn't include the ones you have to fight (since they're worth 5 points).

Btw, best way to grind in WoR imo is just inside a Zozo building, considering you can just mindlessly hold down auto attack and level up to 40 or so fairly quickly if you only bring 1 character. This allows for Esper optimization too, for the cases when 3-4 characters are about to level and you don't have enough +2 Magic Power espers. You'll also have a pretty good bankroll once you get all characters up to 40 (excluding Umaro since it doesn't matter what level you recruit him at since he can't equip espers, and Tritoch is pretty damn hard).

Flame Eater is not bad at all either. Nothing it can do does much damage at all. Your only danger here is Exploder which will kill you repeatedly. The four bomb enemies here are essentially the same bomb that keeps getting revived, not a different entity every time it's spawned in. What this means is that they can eventually run out of MP and become a non-threat, which will most likely happen if you're not over-leveled since Flame Eater has so much HP. The only trick really is to not kill the bombs but to leave them with as few hp as possible. This means they'll waste MP on a non-fatal Exploder. Enough times they won't have enough MP to really do anything. You'll still probably have to burn through a few Tinctures depending on your level; it's an endurance fight but you can't really lose it because nothing is dangerous enough imo.

Here's my cheapo doomgaze strat:
Get your highest level, strongest caster (probably Terra or Celes). Teach Fire 3 or Pearl and equip a safety bit.
When you encounter doomgaze, he casts a spell that instantly kills your entire party. Safety bit will keep at least your caster alive. Immediately cast fire 3 (and if you're brave, go for a second) then RUN AWAY and sleep at Gau's dad's house
Doomgaze keeps his current hp between encounters, so you can just whittle him down like that and eventually claim your Bahamut esper.
It takes a while, but he'll die. If you need to figure out how to find him, get in the airship and angle yourself to the right or left VERY slightly and then go forward. On the map, your blip should appear to be scanning the map. You'll run into him eventually.

lol.
My lack of updates is due to my current progress being grinding one char up to level 40, getting bored, playing Minecraft.

He definitely wasn't hard, just extremely tedious. One reload to switch my Marvel Shoes over to Strago and then 15 minutes of casting Aqua Rake and using Tinctures.

So Intangirs are totally killable in this. Equip Setzer with every +Speed item you have (Kikuichi, MarvelShoes, Peace Ring) and put his jump command at the top of the menu. Turn on Turbo, five minutes later it runs out of MP from Rasp and dies. You get 10000 EXP and that's it.
You can steal a Magicite from them though, the item that summons a random Esper. Those are still only worth 1GP in this.
They're useful for powering up Setzer to absurd levels with sub-par stats, I guess. You could put Phantom on him for +2 speed and get him ridiculously fast but I don't think that speeds up his landing from Jump at all. Totally useless thing to kill.

The point is to kill 1 Intangir to leap on the Veldt. Intangir's rage set is Meteo/Meteo.

Ps, you only need to meet the encounter. You can run and still have em appear on the veldt.
Either way, gau is definitely the MVP in this hack

AuraBolt?
One finger on down. Second finger on left. Release finger on down. Release finger on left. Press A.
Or if you just can't get that this works too:
Down, Down, Left, Left, A
Can do this trick on any Blitz that requires those diagonals where you have to roll your finger, but it makes Bum Rush ridiculously long :p If I don't screw this is up, Bum Rush would be:
Left, Left, Up, Up, Right, Right, Down, Down, Left, Left, A

This guy, by the way, was the easiest fight ever. Bserk works on him and he stops doing 8 moves every time you hit him. Forest Suite, turbo on and hold A for 5 minutes.

WoR is just a lot of turboed-up grinding and using the Colosseum to upgrade shitty items into useable ones. Yet it's surprisingly enjoyable; I always loved the mechanics of this game but the difficulty didn't require much thought. I'm having a blast equipping my characters like they have roles: healer (tons of defense, immunities, some MPower), magic-user (MPower, proc weapons, Hero Ring), or physical attacker (hasted, Hyper Wrist, lost of evasion and in the front row).
I can't just slap a Genji Glove and an Offering on one person and an Economizer and a Gem Box on another and 1-round my way through any fight. Really lets the thought that went into the game's mechanics shine through.

Speaking of Colosseum, if you upgrade enough and get the Immortal armour, Czar is a pushover. seriously.
It makes you immune to all elements. I used Umaro and Celes (other characters would have been a liability if they died, etc) using Quick and a lot of megaelixers and he died....... eventually. ahaha.
Also:
Every so often you run into a boss with crazy defense and magic resist, so you can't do more than 100 damage. This is completely trivialized by Gau's "Lethal Wpn" rage. It has a move called "Missile" which does damage equivalent to a certain percentage of the enemie's overall HP, is non-elemental and works on any mob in the game really.
So while your guys are doing 50 damage, gau is hitting for 9999, and as he does less and less damage, you get a good indicator of how close the boss is to dying.
