steve's business acumen hustled the tech industry along for years. 4 years later and the best non-iPhone smartphone still isn't competing with what apple's got in terms of quality. You can give Jobs as many backhanded compliments as you want, he'll still be remembered as the father of both the smartphone and the first consumer electronics company in history that didnt peddle goofy beige trash to nerds.

apple didn't become fabulously wealthy in the last 5 years because of marketing alone. Product speaks for itself dogg.

But there is something more fundamental to thank Jobs for -- the very screen text you're reading now, the very fact that we can express ourselves digitally with emotion, clarity and variety.
Steve Jobs was the first to give us a real choice of fonts, and made Type Gods of us all.
Steve Jobs didn't invent typefaces, of course; I think Johannes Gutenberg may have had a stronger claim to that in Germany when he used his first carved letters in the 1440s. But Jobs realized their value like no one else engaged in personal computers in the early 1980s, and suddenly we were no longer dependent on professional printers, graphic designers and those long dark nights of the soul with rub-down letters.
And who does Jobs himself thank for this advance? He credits the people who made his academic life untenable at Reed College in Portland, Oregon. Without them, he might not have dropped out. If he hadn't dropped out, he may not have discovered calligraphy.

i'm sorry, what did he innovate? was there any product apple released that wasn't already essentially in existence before apple released it?
you can use apple as an example of effective marketing and monetization... not effective innovation.
p.s. sucks that he died from cancer

As I said, as much an innovator as anyone else. He just happened to skin the cat(s) first. They were already cats before he got to them.
For those who don't do metaphors: He marketed everyone else's ideas better than they did, even if Apple wasn't necessarily the first one to invent the product.

There's no way you're serious...
The first versions of things like excel, word and even windows were actually apple programs and concepts that bill gates ran with more successfully on a larger platform due to microsoft's alliance with IBM. To say that apple didn't innovate is to ignore the entire history of the tech sector for the last 30 years.

Actually, the concepts of word processing and spreadsheets on a computer were out long before Apple came along. Everyone here seems to have this notion that invention is coming up with some brand new thing has never been thought of before. In fact, invention and innovation are really just small incremental changes to existing ideas. I can't think of any invention that was truly a brand new concept with no predecessor.

You idiots wouldn't give the man credit for innovation unless he built a teleportation device in his basement out of parts he smelted together himself out of raw ore. The dude built the first luxury consumer electronics company that has ever existed. I think that defines innovation.

He was a genius and a moron at the same time. His business model was great, knew who to target, etc. and his products were solid and reliable, but like said above, shiny overpriced propriety-based(until recently) bullshit. I think he held himself back by not conforming until it was too late with popular industry standards.
I grew up using apples and macs and I didn't even know wtf the difference between a PC and the others were yet. I wish I had grown up a few years earlier so I could have been there for all of it at a better age. My first computer was an IBM x86 which I think had 16mb of ram tops? I played Zork, Doom, various AD&D games, and other ancients on floppy and those are some of my fondest memories of growing up for me. Learning how to use DOS was what led me to go into programming, too. I would shit a brick if I saw what would come of computing back then.
R.I.P. Steve Jobs, you were very important in the tech world and we owe a lot to you.

I don't understand why this guy was such a good person. Sure he invented many products that started with the letter "i", but those ideas were already thought of by other companies. To be honest, the only reason why Macs are popular is for their looks, there's not a whole lot special with them. Also, Mr. jobs made billions through his personal gain and never donated any to charity. Jew maybe? yes.

I despise and loathe Apple for a lot reasons, but that doesn't mean, Steve Jobs was not one of the most brilliant minds, marketers, businessman of the 20th century. I give credit where credit is due, he created a cult brand, and his company created one great product (the iPod) his computers were always behind in the hardware department and OSX is nothing but a hacked version of Unix so the "Mac" really wasn't anything new, but his marketing and execution was always brilliant.
R.I.P. Steve Jobs.

Nobody will give a fuck the same way nobody gives fuck about the 2 million Dinka, Zaghawa, Nuer and Fur who were machine-gunned down by Mi-24s in Sudan. There ain't any money in a dead Dinka. And money is the only thing that decides how much TV time a corpse gets. And Steve Jobs had a lot of it.
So, allow me to assure you that in the future, as you lay there with tubes coming out of your fat carcass, and lean over to watch the cardio beeper zig when it's supposed to zag, scared out of your mind and ashamed to look down at that fat gut hyper-ventilating its last chickenshit breaths, nobody will give a single fuck when you keel over either.
