View Full Version : EQ Memories

Hello everybody!

I've been playing on P99 for about 10-12 years now (ignore the lifetime of this account; I created a new one and decided to start fresh). If there's anything I've learned about playing on a server filled primarily with classic EverQuest veterans, it's that we all have stories from our veteran days, as well as stories from this server days, that stuck with us. Heroic moments, moments of victory, of defeat, of memorable players met along the way, guild drama, friendships, rivalries, times spent with loved ones, some of whom may no longer be with us in life.

There are many stories like these, that I think many of us remember, but fail to share. I want to hear those stories. For me, I know many of my core EQ memories have started slipping away. Online, we've preserved some, buried in forum threads that are never to be read again. We've preserved maps, guides, zone information, spawn points, loot drops, raid boss tactics, racial stats, class descriptions, spell lists, but not stories. The heart of EQ lies in the stories; not the game data.

To that end, I'd like to work on creating an EQ Chronicle, of stories preserved from the memory of players. It doesn't matter if you've been playing since classic EQ beta, or you've been in P99 for a week. If you're interested in submitting your best memories of the game, you can reply here, message my inbox, or send a message to my character in-game if you see me online (Benevicta). I want to collect stories as many as possible to preserve. Granted, I won't be able to put every single story in, depending on volume and quality, but I'd like to create something that can be published and shared, so it can be recalled again someday down the road.

You can submit stories of yourself, stories you remember of others, or stories passed down to you. This is essentially an oral tradition preserved. Narrative is preferable to game mechanics and numbers, and there may be some revision to preserve the narrative arc, moving away as much as possible from numbers and stats. However, the core essence of your story will be preserved with as much relevant detail as possible. If you're interested, here's the information I need:

1) Name of Main Character, Race, Class, and Level as far as you can remember
2) Estimated year and expansion era
3) The story, to the greatest detail you remember
4) Server the event happened on (if known)
5) What made this event memorable to you? Why is it important?
6) Your character name you'd like credited in the notes, and main server
7) Any extra context notes you feel worth sharing.

I understand many of these stories will have taken place beyond perfect recall. Try to remember what you can, and I'll try to fill in narrative gaps to the best of my ability, if necessary. I'll only accept stories from the live servers, or servers such as P99 which attempt to remain closely faithful to the original game, not servers which have fundamentally altered EQ far away from the original.

Remember, this is a hobby project. It won't be an instant publishing, and I'm only one guy working on it in the midst of normal life. But still, I think it would be good to preserve what really made EQ so meaningful to us. I'll be using AI for formatting and allocation, but not for narrative revision.

Did I ask you for first and last name, phone number, address, email, or ANYTHING personally identifiable to you? No I did not. Apparently, what you think is doxxing is not doxxing.

Asking, "Tell me about the time Burproar absolutely carried your raid 15 years ago so I can preserve the legend for others to enjoy," isn't even in the neighborhood of doxxing. Asking the name of your character and the server you're on so you can be credited for that story has literally no impact toward anybody identifying you.

Lastly, pardon me for not caring about forums 99.99% of the time because my core social life isn't tied to this one small corner of the internet. I'm just a guy, living a normal life, and I thought I'd start a project that brings joy to others. Apparently a tiny sliver of positivity was too much to ask, so I'd be happy to delete this thread altogether if you walk me through the process, because I haven't been able to find any button for it. Otherwise, enjoy your cynicism.

My fish finder lead me to the back door of the Seafarer's Roost when I saw her. A strapping adventurer as well as fishmonger that I am led me to inquire whither or not she was a princess fallen from an island in the sky. She smiled a mouthy grin like a barricuda. I asked if could dip my pole in her tackle box. She coyly replied that I must be NO RENT and consumed two stacks of short beer without ever taking her eyes off me.

How 'bout you begin then? Like surely someone who has played here for 10 - 12 yrs (which is it?) must have at least one memorable story that someone else here was a part of?
Check out ya earliest player.ini and do the math.

Sure, I'd be happy to share a story. Despite the clear sarcasm, and likely negativity.

The year was about 2005 or 2006, back on the live servers. I had a level 50ish Froglok Shaman named Kunguth, from the Prexus server (or whichever server it was merged with at that time). I was looking for something to do that day, when a GM made a public call for a special event he was hosting: a scavenger hunt.

I decided to show up and answer the call. When everybody was mustered, the GM sent out his list of obscure items to find; rare drops, tradeskilled items, and items that dropped only from a specific mob in the dark corners of forgotten zones. When the list was given, I was unfortunately unable to acquire most of them myself, due to being horribly under-geared for my level (the inflated economy made it difficult there). But there was one item I could consistently acquire, using a skill most other players didn't even bother to level: Clockwork Essence.

Clockwork Essence was only acquired by fishing Clockwork Koi from Ak'Anon. It was a rarer catch than Fresh Fish and rusty daggers for sure, and required further processing in a tackle box after the catch to extract, at a trivial of 122. For players who hadn't leveled fishing, it would be a bottleneck point, where time would be spent catching a fish that would then need to be crafted into Clockwork Essence at a higher trivial.

I had a maxed out fishing skill. Since the other items on my list were largely unobtainable within my own capability, I decided to spend the duration fishing, instead. I put out a message in the broader channel that I would be fishing in Ak'Anon to create the clockwork essence. Players interested would simply need to hail me, and I would provide them with the essence. I had about 20-30 players approach me during this time, as I continued to pass out Clockwork Essence at no charge.

Finally, the scavenger hunt was complete. Somebody had won. Everybody was called to muster again, and prizes were passed out.

The GM recognized my contribution, and gave me a special reward: a device that summoned bait. Nothing game-changing. Nothing legendary. Nothing that would influence my capability in the game. Just a simple item that would give me a negligible convenience in a forgotten skill. But it was tied to me specifically. It was restricted only to Froglok Shaman, but had another restriction with it. It was restricted to "Player name: Kunguth."

It was special to me because it was an earned reward from a simple service offered to other players, apart from my gain. I never expected to win anything, nor did I try to. But I kept myself involved in the event, and spent that time helping other players win it. The item would never be found in guides or public databases, but somewhere in the internal database of items, my character's name would live on forever; forgotten, yet immortalized.

Thanks for sharing. As others have said these forums aren't very active anymore - though it could be a treasure-trove of old live EQ stories posted over the years. EQ players are spread out all over reddit, discord servers, the official EQ forum and maybe the FoH forum. So I would try reaching out to those communities.

There might be some good stories posted on youtube as well. I remember there were a couple in this long video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmRbgIS8jBw Perhaps not exactly what you're looking for, but I like the "me no reroll" guy, reminds me of "book not up" or "gratz Bladefrenzy" from p99. Very nostalgic memes.

My most memorable experience has to be back on the E`ci server about 26 years ago...

This was Mhantanza, my level 21 Dwarf Warrior. My buddy started playing EQ in the classic era in late 1999. He showed it to me, but I was unimpressed. I was still playing Diablo and saw no reason to switch games. But then the following year he showed up at my house with the box for Ruins of Kunark. He said something along the lines of "dude you gotta play now... you can play as a lizard person."

The box art for Kunark and seeing his excitement about this expansion sold me. I bought EverQuest instead of Diablo 2 that summer.

While the idea of playing Iksars was fantastical to me: the reality sunk in quickly. I was told by others how Iksars were on Kunark all by themselves, with no safe travel options to the main continents. Iksar players were in for a more isolated experience. I didn't really want an isolated experience, so I switched to Dwarf Warrior, named Mhantanza.

Mhantanza (who would later become Mhantanza Manzamatazan at level 20) was my first "main" character in EQ. I spent hours upon hours in the newbie zones of Butcherblock and Greater Faydark. I even completed the Small Scarab Armor quests for a sweet pair of Green Boots, a Green Helm and a Green Breastplate with a whopping +10 HP. Then one day, someone came along and gifted me a Short Sword of the Ykesha.

If I wasn't hooked already: I was fully hooked now. My friend and I continued to stomp through Crushbone and I continued to gain levels. I felt unstoppable. But the experience was drying up in Crushbone. After choosing a surname, I let my friend convince me to take a boat trip to Kunark and hunt in the Lake of Ill Omen.

We hopped on the boat in Butcherblock and set off to board the Maiden's Voyage to Firiona Vie.

Except there was one issue...

I was playing on a 56k baud modem at the time. (We didn't upgrade to Cable until 2001.)

When the boat zoned into Timorous Deep, I lost connection. I couldn't get back in the game for a few hours. When I finally returned: I was back at the PoD lift in Greater Faydark, sans my gear.

I ran back to Butcherblock and jumped back on the ferry. When we zoned into Timorous Deep in the middle of the ocean, I knew I was screwed. I jumped on the Maiden's Voyage, but couldn't find my corpse. The rest of the night, I stayed in Timorous Deep asking if anyone had seen my corpse. No luck. I didn't know I could petition to recover a lost corpse... so I just logged off and stayed out for a few weeks while I went out and bought Diablo 2.

After multiple hours in Diablo 2, I got tired of the repetitive loop. I was hooked on EverQuest. I sold my copy of Diablo 2 to a friend, and booted back up EverQuest. I logged into Mhantanza Manzamatazan, level 21 Dwarf Warrior... and I started over, finding new gear and weapons.

I'd never experienced loss of progress like that before in a video game. It felt like I lost real-life personal belongings. But, it taught me a lesson about EQ... Never log off before finding your corpse.

Marshall Mhantanza Manzamatazan retired in April of 2004, having tanked Temple of Veeshan, Ssra Temple, and Plane of Time. I never lost a corpse in this game again.

RnF is dead because no server drama to blow off steam about, and, because "politics is divisive" we can't even discuss rl madness.

The mmorpg model used to have a lot of life in game and out of game, socially.

But part of the death of the genre is mods afraid of a fully operable rants and flames section. Legal reasons, fears of getting de-hosted.

I don't blame them. But I'm not going to say it isn't a chicken shit move.

We got real life piss christ action, and we can't even Norrath-ify it?

I started on the original Povar server. It was 1999, and I played on my son's account when he wasn't, until I got hooked and started my own. Made to level, I think it was, 65 before calling it quits. I lasted about 4-5 yrs, I can't recall exactly.
My first memory was as a newbie level 5 ranger wanting to connect with both of my kids who were in Qeynos and I was in GFay. Naive as I was I decided to trek across the world to the other side. It took me about 5 hours to do that. I can't count how many times I died and had to run back from where ever I had been bound. I didn't even understand what being bound meant until that first time I died in EComm and ended up back in GFay.

Good times, good times.

lol my memories are way diff. i didnt know what eq was. had a group of like 12 friends who all played starcraft and tribes together. i was closest with one friend and he wasnt at school for literally a week.

since we were bff it was common for me to spend the night at his house. go over expecting to play starcraft like we always do. but instead hes killing tadpoles in a game called everquest. turns out he had laid out of school all week to do this. game was so lame.

at first i was like okay neat. but after you kill like 30 tadpoles in a row, like we get it bro, you can kill a tad pole? lame af. dude ends up passing out hella early because he hadnt slept in days (keep in mind we're like 14).

so i move over from my laptop to his desktop and im like let me try this. go to the char creation screen. am blown away by all the different races. none of this is mainstream back then btw. i had never heard of a dark elf or a troll. i had no clue what the hell a shaman or druid was. i ended up making a monk expecting it to be some catholic dude who went around praying all the time.

long story short i got hooked badly. within a year almost a dozen kids from my neighborhood were also hooked. some shared accounts, some literally got part time jobs to buy a pc to be able to play this game. always felt more like an irl game more than an internet game at first.

but then i eventually made close friends. my longest lasting friendship was a girl i met on everquest ngl. a few years ago she went completely MIA. I didn't notice at first because it wasnt uncommon for us to get mad and stop talking to each other for a couple of months here and there.

could just tell something was wrong. had no way to figure out what was going on. then i remembered her brothers name and her last name, and looked him up on facebook and saw all the obituary stuff. apparently she took her life. to this day idk how she died and would never ask her family.

that being said, its always been interesting to me that dalnir is this weird obscure zone no one uses? for me dalnir was SUPER popping because it was a hot zone and I remember her and me doing a lot of dalnir and talking about how it felt like we're in a cardboard box maze with hamster chips all over the place. didnt realize most eq players dont remember the zone as fondly or view it as meta because it was 100% meta for us at that time. golden memories.

crazy at the time because i didnt realize this would be such a narrow moment lost in time.

remember all the groups at the giant fort in FM after that lol

just a completely diff game in most regards

I recall Burning Woods being the spot for druids kiting giants around the area. Never could find any when my groups went there because they were all snared and dotted behind the druids.

Just ignore RecondoJoe's ban evasion account. He's not the most intelligent individual on the planet as you can see.

Funny enough I pursued a finance career and became a multi millionaire due the skills I learned while tunnel questing back in '99-'01

Do you actually work in the industry? That would be funny if we've crossed paths lol
