True to its name, EverQuest hasn't let the questing end since 1999, but it's been a minute since a big new EverQuest project appeared aside from expansions to the existing MMOs. The last was EverQuest Next, which was cancelled in 2016.

Finally, Daybreak's got something new for us, but what's next this time is what was: Coming this July, EverQuest Legends is vanilla EverQuest as it was originally released before any expansions, with all the same challenges, graphics, and sounds lovingly restored from 1999—but with a twist.

Daybreak is making bigger changes to the original experience than Blizzard did with WoW Classic, heavily buffing player characters to let solo players or small groups experience everything the game has to offer without having to recruit 30 friends to go kite fire giants and kill Lord Nagafen.

Players will choose their race as normal, but will start with two classes, sorta like multiclassing in Dungeons & Dragons. After the briefish journey to level 10, they'll even get a third. Characters will keep all the skills, spells, and disciplines from their initial class, making an individual character much stronger than their true classic equivalent. Imagine playing a wizard that can quad kite with bard speed and give herself clarity, or a warrior who brings his own mage damage shield and shaman buffs. Being able to freely choose three classes opens a truly staggering number of combinations, and it should be an absolute feast for theorycrafters.

One time payment would have been better than subscription model, I agree. If the EQ IP had "died", it would have been carried on by the emulator communities, frankly with greater care and respect for the IP than daybreak usually gives.

I am cautiously pessimistic about the announcement. I don't want the server to be close to a 1 for 1 of THJ because there were design elements of THJ I also did not like. I would want to see what spin and inspiration Secrets and Rogean have on the vision of an EQ solo fantasy server. And frankly, they would have to have a better one than THJ to retain my interest.

It’s a little bit more like World of Warcraft than I eq.

Like if you’re min maxing THJ basically the experience was you would have 24 hour lockouts on instances, and you would basically login to daily runs of the instances that you liked and then log out just like World of Warcraft.

In the final expansion, there were two bosses that were very difficult to defeat on your own.

The Lachlan boss, Sarah was still extremely difficult to beat on your own during planes of power and Zebulon or Zebulon or something. The boss of Plains of power was very very, very difficult to beat on your own and almost impossible to beat on hard mode.

Every boss had like two different ways you could kill it like Seru, if you killed his guards, would be a lot easier than if you killed him with all of his guards alive.

And you’d get much more loot if you did the hard mode bosses so a lot of people would group up every day with randoms to defeat the hard mode bosses together.

So the experience is much more like World of Warcraft where you play solo and then mindlessly group with randoms to defeat a boss and then you go back to soloing (or log off till tomorrow…)(or repeat the process like 10 times because the game is so much goddamn fun that you have 10 max level character characters)

I would personally pay to play Project1999. I get more entertainment out of it than I do WoW a lot of the times. I would still take huge breaks that last months at a time, but I do that with every MMO I play. The reason I play on P99 over TLPs isn't because of financial reasons. It's because you can't get anything like P99 out of a Darkpaw server.

If one already has a sub to Live, it is quite the curious calculation they have made. They will gain/lose the same number of subs. Doing both subs is a fool's errand.
