If you can lose all your inventory so easily by dying in a bad spot or by jumping into a hole, then what is the point of accumulating inventory or wealth in this game? Not only is this game extremely difficult compared to other mmos but it requires a knowledge that is gained steadily by reading like this is some kind of homework to do. You can lose your corpse quite easily by being unaware of an enemy and you don't even know the whole map as a new player.

So why play the game at all and become level 60 get a nice inventory. Is it worth it? Or are you deceiving yourself or just lucky because this was your childhood game and you learned to play it because learning things when you were a child is much easier and now you're a pro in this 1 game and proud of it. I am either too dumb to play this game or too lazy.. this game feels like pure homework to me. Hard maths.

Off the meds again? (I don't mean that perjoratively, I mean it as a real question, in light of previous conversations we've had.)

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;

I don't think you need to do so much reading - you can learn through exploration and in game conversation. Also, regarding corpseloss, I've found other players to be incredibly kind in providing assistance recovering lost corpses. Furthermore, the administration of this server is very kind in recovering rotted corpses - pretty much as long as you don't let your corpse rot in the Plane of Sky, you're likely to get your stuff back.

Besides which, losing a corpse or delevelling significantly can be a fun soft reset for a character. It opens up access to items and areas of the game you may have otherwise outgrown. An alternative to rerolling the character to relive the journey again.

I don't think you're too dumb or lazy to play the game - you seem smart and active to me, which may be the real problem - this game requires quite a reptilian mind set in many regards. Sitting in ambush for hours, biding time while waiting for respawns, mobs to path correctly, hp/mana to replenish, etc. If you need constant stimulation or are easily agitated that style of play may not quite be for you.

You keep returning to the idea of the game not being for you - the game is fundamentally social - I wonder whether you have tried starting a group of players with a specific play time? Maybe every Tuesday evening. I've found not only is this a fun, social way to play, it also stops the game become too overwhelming, makes catastrophic errors less likely and makes any corpse recoveries far easier.

Because you must practice incase you ever time travel so you can be the worlds best everquest player.

This is my new favourite conspiricy.

All those very bleeding edge guilds on live who somehow were able to defeat all new content on day of release as if they already knew all the answers, all the strats... it was just an elite core of p99ers who managed to time travel back to 1999, after decades of practice on emulation.

If only. I've seen a few Castle monks in flayed barb legs, priceless fistwraps, completely decked out - delevel to 5 and then solo in ... Unrest, Mistmoore, City of Mist, Karnors....

I get that monk is awesome ... but I was able to solo in places like Dalnir, Droga, Howling Stones, etc, with tunnel gear my first go `round as a monk.

I have seen a few Tank players delevel after achieving near BiS and then be the PuG hero in those zones.. but for some reason, Castle's shitter monks think its fun to get near BiS and then delevel to then solo in zones that people in bronze armor group in.

You basically just explained why this game is so great in your rant about it.
There is a certain thrill to the game when everything is "risky" with a chance to either lose hours or days of progress for making a mistake.

This experience is enhanced even more when you look at the direction that most video games went in order to "mitigate" this feature as if it were a fault that needed fixing. That's probably why most of us still play after all these years. Very few games are like it.

I think the reason why games like Elden Ring are so successful is because they brought back this feature. I get it, it's not for everyone. It's slightly masochistic for sure...but it makes "victory " so much sweeter.

But I can play Dark Souls II Scholar of the First Sin just fine and know everything about that game. You don't have to read anything. But in this game you don't know where to start where to buy and what to buy. It's really complicated while Dark Souls isn't really.

What aspect do you find complicated specifically?
Aside from learning where to buy certain spells at, I find the game to be quite straight forward...which to me, IS one of its faults. It's basically just "kill monsters that con blue with friends, loot bodies, sell loot, buy spells and gear, maintain food/drink, and repeat" which does get a little monotonous. I don't think it's so confusing tho that it requires extensive reading. The few quests or events that might don't come until the way late game where you should already have a pretty strong grasp on the game mechanics and your character.

Everquest is a game that isn't for easy mode players. It requires you to acquire knowledge, skills, and patience.
That's its appeal to many of us. Not knowing everything is why we play like we do, why we keep coming back to it, some like myself came back after 20 years of playing easier mode games like WoW or a dozen other MMORPGs.
If we wanted easy mode, we'd play those games.

The only thing that was ever complicated about EQ, in my limited experience, was if you actually tried completing quests that were more involved than "bring me x". But since the rewards were almost never worth any effort, that didn't matter.

I don't think I've ever lost a corpse. I've lost levels on corpse runs, but never the actual body/loot. That would be dispiriting.
