I always LOL when people talk about Pantheon or M&M being the true spiritual successor to EQ.

Reality is that the true spiritual successor to EQ is actually World of Warcraft. If you were a kid in 1999 who was super curious what the future of EQ would look like, and you had access to a time machine and traveled 15 years in the future, you would be looking at World of Warcraft. Nothing else.

Also I love M&M and hope it's super successful btw, but I just keep hearing these nerds on Youtube talk about how M&M is the true spiritual successor to EQ and as a non-boomer who plays modern games and stuff... like bro we are ignoring a really big elephant in the room and doing a hard LARP to pretend like WoW and EQ aren't related at all.

I frequently talk about this with youngsters on WoW too BTW. Kid who are like what the hell is EQ??? Like honey, you have no idea that the game you're playing is essentially the evolution of EQ. And yes -- Classic WoW is closer to P99 than Retail WoW. Just cold hard facts.

Also yes I am drunk AF. Please take this into consideration before raging out.

For me eq2 was the true successor because neither of the computers I had at each time could run the game well

Nah. ESO is the proper successor to EQ. A lot of ESO is modeled after EQ.

Elden Ring is. It contains the unforgiving nature of eq, the sense of wonder, the bizarre quest lines, and the nonsensical item stats.

Both EQ and WoW had an amazing vanilla experience and then started going down hill on their 2nd expansions which were both ice themed.

WoW was basically EQ2 at launch too, just with a much better optimized engine and completely different art style. So yeah I think the "spiritual" successor to EQ is obviously EQ2 before it's WoW, unless "spiritual" requires that we leave out actual successors, which it probably does I guess nevermind.

All I remember from WoW beta was item server loot lag off corpses and playing servant for nonstop fetch quests. I hate questing.

EQ2 was so poorly optimized that a new PC struggled to run it.

WoW could be played on a 2000-2001 era laptop at the time.

Pulling in EQ is the same thing as fetch quests
and when the pullers left for WoW there was no more exp or raids in eq

I'm gonna let you be wrong on the Internet without feeling the need to comment on how wrong that is.

I guess in that respect EQ2 was a game way ahead of its time.

the epic quests are those most epic of fetch quests in gaming, one giant shopping list of items a few npc's need you to go get for them.

It was an epic fetch quest for a pretty good reward. No issue with that model. The pickup 10 crops 20ft from my house as an exp progression model is the worst thing to happen to gaming since EA and maybe horse armor.

I only talk to people iRL if they have yellow exclamation points above their head. Even better if it's a yellow question mark.

I guess in that respect EQ2 was a game way ahead of its time.

It didn't run bad because of the graphical features included in it, but rather how the engine did not take advantage of anything but a single core CPU and didn't even utilize the GPU until it was hackjobbed into it a few years later to deal with shading options. A lot of very questionable programming methods with how these were rendered. Even then it was so notoriously janky they just gave up on major revamping projects for the engine around 2010-2011, especially after the dev team downsizing slowly started occurring in 2007 onward and had to strip out some features (primarily with lighting/shading) that were in the game at launch.
Nowadays the game runs great, but thats because its all brute forced with modern hardware. They even finally made the conversion to DX11 and 64bit few years ago.

I have no recollection of making this thread... I just decided to check P99 out because there's an NPC in the new WoW expac named Dalnir...

I wanted to post a screenshot and then I see this thread and realize I'm the one who made it....

I had a Pentium 4 3.2mhz with 1GB of ram when EQ2 came out and even then the game ran like pure ass at low settings while my cpu fan was roaring like a jet engine. I regret I didn't get an Athlon 64 CPU btw.
