View Full Version : Pet-Caused Wipe

Hi everyone! I was grouped with a few folks in lower Guk recently and may have wiped my group as well as a group we had delved to the “bedroom” area to join up with:(. I felt terrible but am not certain what happened. I would really appreciate any thoughts on what might have happened so I can avoid this in the future.

From my perspective, here is what happened. Myself (a necro) my pet, and two of my guildmates snuck and fought our way down to the bedroom area of lower Guk to join a few people that were already down there. We used the water passageways. After we made it to the bedroom area, we popped out of the water and immediately joined the group that was already down there (the “Camp Group”) in a fight. My group disbanded so that we could receive invitations to join the Camp Group. So I was not grouped when we wiped.

I think the Camp Group was fighting at least two mobs when we arrived. One of the mobs was very close to the water, and I had my pet attack that mob. My pet remained in the water and attacked from the water. I don’t know if my pet had aggro on that mob—the mob might have been rooted and the pet might have had aggro.

Seconds after my pet engaged, we wiped. Multiple mobs swept through the area and killed my guildmates as well as the entire Camp Group. I don’t think my pet ever left the water (I mostly had the pet on my screen until right before I died). I think (but am not certain) that I died before my pet died.

The autopsy was that my pet somehow aggroed these adds. This is surmise, but let’s assume it is what happened—it was at least plausible enough to the more experienced players that it is worth my understanding how it could have happened.

So, how could my pet have pulled these adds? What should I do to avoid this? Possibly the best answer is don’t crawl around dungeons you don’t know with a pet; this is fair and consider it internalized, but if there’s anything else to know about pets/aggro mechanics/bugs like pets clipping through walls, I am all pointy gnome ears.

I love this game and the community has been wonderful. After the wipe, everyone was very, very nice and, while causing a wipe was embarrassing, it was overall a great (and very fun) night of dungeon delving.

Thanks to all!

Best way to avoid something like that is not to summon a pet until you get to wherever you're camping. Pathing can be crazy at times. All part of the game though, hope the corpse recovery wasn't too shit :)

^ this. Good news OP is you're not alone this is a known shortcoming of having a pet and even people with solid zone and pet knowledge can run into these situations unexpectedly. Definitely avoid traveling around with a pet when possible, not only can you run into weird pathing and pathing glitches but also generally your pet will be of a lower level than you and have a larger social agro range cause you to get adds that your toon alone without a pet could otherwise get past.

For LGuk specifically the river leading into the bedroom and the bridge past the BR leading to all the rest of the undead areas are notoriously dangerous for pets to travel through and will likely result in trains due to glitchy pathing.

If you don't have one look into getting a reclaim energy item (mage focus item, can be used by all pet classes) this allows you to despawn your pet and return the mana it costs to cast the pet (or a % of it based on their HP% at the time of reclaim) so you can unsummon and resummon effeciently (also great for cycling through pets to get a max pet). Should be able to farm all the pieces if you're of level for LGuk or buy them cheaply in EC.

This is super helpful. Thank you ShovelQuest, Swish, and WarpathEQ! I will wear my Pet Gone Wild merit badge as a reminder of this sound advice (maybe affixing it to an affordable/obtainable reclaim-energy item).

As others have noted, if you had your pet following you around as you crawled through the dungeon, it's likely that its pathing glitched at some point (maybe it bounced down a pathway without you realizing or glitched through a wall and then popped back next to you, or something like that) and it had aggroed a bunch of things that you didn't realize.

Those aggroed mobs were likely going through glitching pathing while trying to chase you and your pet, and may have picked up other mobs as well. When you reached the camp and stopped running around, they were able to resolve the pathing glitches and all come running down on top of you. Only summon your pet once youre in camp, and keep it in the camp with you.

The other nice thing about LGuk is usually when you agro a mob they have a attack type message in chat (I forget what it actually says like a croak or attack or something), if you see those start going off just assume its you and get the F out immediately, don't wait until the mobs all show up or its prolly too late.

Especially now adays when there are fewer and fewer people down there.

Pets and z-axis can cause some weird drama if mobs get pushed under the ground. Your pet is also much lower level so it’s possible it had some aggro that way (somehow through a wall?).

I would probably chalk this up to “EQ being EQ”. It’s likely not to happen again and you will still be laughing about this one 20 years later.

Seems like as good a thread as any to post this again: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCvFxf41cbU

When this game was being made, the developers knew the pathing was awful and it'd kill lots of people in dungeons, so they made pets super jacked to compensate. That's why pets are so good compared to melees for their level: they're dumb and get the caster and his group killed.

Then again they underestimated how dumb some melee players were...

To OP.
Nice claiming of "potential error". Nice call and i believe the only reason i havent done similar is I dont have a pet class to fuck up like that.

You are a gentleman and a scholar. Im not fussed if you are girl or not.
Im crazy and I own it.
No insult intended or implied.

Necro here. Also Lguk is my favorite zone.

When in BR dont send you pet in until you see the mob is in the room. Pathing is crazy there. Only send the pet in if you are watching him the entire time. He will aggro things way before your other players. He can also aggro things through walls due to pathing.

Have him guard right on the bed. Scroll pet back off if he does anything out of the ordinary. If he wont back off then just dismiss him immediately. Your pet was in the water... he probably aggroed the hallway guys before the water tunnel, those guys ping pong off each other.
