AI has cracked the code. And, let's be honest: this is it in a nutshell.

This isn't related to P99 or EverQuest, but a lot of the decline is because modern MMOs aren't fun anymore and this is coming from someone who has an active subscription to World of Warcraft. Like it just sucks. Nothing you do in the game feels meaningful, all content/items become obsolete every few months. Content gets digested super rapidly.
I can remember being a kid when EverQuest was a new game, and when my parents bought Velious and Luclin it almost felt like a waste of money because I was still digesting the Planes and Kunark and really didn't have the time or desire to travel to the new zones as a non-elite player, lol.
IDK if we'll ever have a game like that again, ya know? Where it releases and a few years later you haven't even hit max level or seen most of the game due to how difficult and time consuming it is.
Like 11.1 for WoW dropped and within 2 hours I was basically done with everything.
the decline in MMOs is due to the quality of players playing them, why games like https://store.steampowered.com/app/2382520/Erenshor/
is my only hope for this entire retarded genre of video games, it addresses the actual problem, other humans you have to play with.

I have never once played an MMO that was even close to ultimate online or everquest, the two games that invented the MMO genera.

That's why I quit everquest. I was like, I haven't even seen half of kunark yet and you're releasing velious? This is just a cash cow.
And I quit. Never looked back until I came to p99 which confirmed my suspicions.

Same here, I played EQ when my IRL buddies moved onto EQ2 then I played wow and was blown away how the difficulty was watered down. On p99 green I love trying to start a barb war at night in everfrost with no one in entire zone - fun times!

This prob trigger a lot of P99 people, but it's the opposite. Gamers are dramatically more skilled and more hardcore now than they were when we played EQ. It's not just EQ though, I think about this all the time when I'm playing FPS or other types of games.
My diamond-level skills in Overwatch when the game launched 9 years ago wouldn't even get me placed into low silver in 2025. I was considered a super-human for my antics with Starcraft 1 and WC3 20+ years ago, but if you had a time machine, I wouldn't even be able to hang in the lowest brackets today. I think about the same thing everytime I think of the top players from Quake/Tribes in 1998 and how they wouldn't even be able to compete at a low level now.
Or how Classic WoW was quickly and easily digested when compared to Vanilla WoW. This was a big one for me BTW. I remember when Classic WoW launched, I was like 36, and recently unemployed, so I had a ton of free time. To my surprise, it wasn't the WoW veterans my age or older who were exceeding at classic WoW, it was the 20 year olds who admitted they never played Vanilla WoW and just wanted to see what it was all about.
This younger generation is just dramatically more hardcore when it comes to gaming, but modern MMOs are overwhelmingly not fun and are missing the core element that made them appealing in the first place, lol.

that's the problem I'm complaining about. people that take a 'theme park' MMO, turn it into an esport, like some Broodwar GOMTv spectacle. The meta escalates. People literally run TAS scripts to control their characters to get a advantage on FTE. It boils down to millisecond latency because both guilds do it.
I'm in the minority, I totally get that. I enjoy competitive video games. I played Tribes, participated in America's Army clan wars, woke up at 4am to watch Idra's Broodwar failures in Korea, and even played Eve Online in 16-hour stints during the great wars. Yet, in the 'dungeons and dragons' simulator category, I seek something more casual. I want to avoid min/maxers and rule lawyers.

I got denied entry in my guilds AQ40 run last night in SoD classic
They're using ilvl addons to gear check at the door. For guild runs. On SoD where you have immense power from runes, etc...trivializing the content.
People are just spergs and want to fully min/max every aspect of a given game.

1. time requirement --- no one really dug into that yet.
2. monetization. wanting to box is a form of monetization. You can pay (to run) for x number of chars, why can't you?
3. meta-gaming this is what we call "quality of gamers here I guess. The fact is, people do online shiite a hundred diff ways. Part of meta-gaming *is* that not everyone is on the same page in pugs, in zones, in guilds everything.
Let me suggest this defintion.
Meta-gaming = all the game play diff so-called non-classic "intentions" of the designers. Meta gaming includes everything from crafting macros to any given class's tricks that are always mentioned on eq boards, again, from swarming to ae grps to, naturally botting in and of itself.

If that def holds (it needs some buffing up) then even p99 is largely meta gaming. A DKP race is a meta gaming box, or game moment. It would be easier to say what isn't meta gaming on p99, than what is.
Not sure folks can even what a raid encounter looks like outside of a meta gaming perspective. AI don't lie.

The real problem with MMOs is there are rats and sheep.
The sheep are harmless and need to cared for and will blindly follow a leader - the problem is they end up following sociopaths like Mao ( china numba one ! - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democide )
The rats / cockroaches RCs - are sociopaths that look for other RCs and a leader that is evil like themselves

when were most deaths during black plague and why?
Reasoned about Black Plague death timeline for a few seconds
Most deaths during the Black Death occurred in Europe during the initial outbreak between 1348 and 1349. This period saw an unprecedented surge in mortality because the plague, caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis, spread extremely rapidly through unsanitary, overcrowded conditions, and a population with little knowledge or means to combat such a virulent disease. The combination of these factors led to a catastrophic loss of life, with estimates suggesting that 30% to 60% of Europe's population perished during this period.

around 1348 what was the opinion of cats?
Reasoned about medieval views on cats for 5 seconds
During the mid‑14th century, European views on cats were mixed and varied by region. On one hand, cats were often valued for their ability to control rodent populations—which was particularly important as rodents were later understood (though not at the time) to be linked to the spread of the plague. On the other hand, superstitious and religious beliefs sometimes cast cats, especially black ones, in a negative light. They were occasionally associated with witchcraft or seen as omens of evil.
So, around 1348, while many people recognized cats as useful companions in keeping pests at bay, a significant portion of the population also held suspicions of them due to prevailing superstitions. This ambivalence sometimes led to instances of cat persecution in certain areas, though the extent and impact of such actions remain debated among historians.

TBF I was drunk AF and winding down for the night, I don't even know what I was ranting about in hindsight.
I do notice a lot of people frequently say that there's no market for an MMO as hardcore as EQ in 2025, and in my experience this is the opposite of reality. Like I know so many kids whose entire lives revolve around video games. Like right now in my current online friend group you have a bunch of 40+ year olds like me playing Retail WoW, and then all of the 20 something year olds are all playing Classic WoW and dumping way more hours into the game than I ever did 20+ years ago.
I think there's definitely a market for hardcore MMOs, there's just a short supply.
