I'm very active on P99 and on WoW. I've played WoW for well over 20 years at this point now. It's just an interesting thing for me to think about when I have WoW friends gasp at me and tell me how old EQ is because it completely goes over their head that one game is 25 years old, and the other game is almost 21 years old.
I also genuinely wonder if EQ would still be alive and well if Sony didn't pull the plug on it for EQ 2.

There are other philosophical questions I have. Like people tell me the reason the P99 community is so friendly is because they are old. Meanwhile I'm surrounded by dudes in their 40s on WoW who are complete jerks, and I'm still in my 30s, despite playing EQ in '99.

The history revisionists drive me wild too. The 25 year olds whose eyes light up when they find out I play EQ. They always assume that because Runescape came out in 2001, that it was the top MMO of the time, and in reality, no one I know played RS. But in their mind it was the first OG / top MMO of the early 2000s. I don't even think it became a thing until much later?

PS. Also in all seriousness, a woman I dated briefly was making fun of me for WoW's graphics and how out-dated they looked a couple of years ago. It reminded me of how WoW players sound when they talk about EQ. Which is ironic.

Heh, there are several valid answers to that question, but I assumed he meant the "combat upgrade" patch that completely changed (ruined) how the game worked.

It's also worth noting that the game was pretty crap on launch, and it took like six months to get to the usual "semi-complete Verant game" state ... but I totally agree that, in it's heyday, SWG was pretty cool.

This too is a big thing I think. Eq has no hearthstones and dungeon que's, making it difficult to get around alone. Even if you're an active player after 20 years with BIS, you still need to beg someone to port you somewhere.

It reminds us that we need each other, even if we're soloing on enchanters and shamans 90% of the time.

The ESO developers have been running that game into the ground recently by following community feedback. Somehow by giving the casual/solo players everything they asked for the numbers of those players have been steadily declining. And I assume eventually TES VI will be released and with ESO evolving into a single-player RPG they will become their own biggest competition.

This holds true. I remember WoW pulling primetime TV ads with celebrities advertising it, such as Mr. T. It was too mainstream, and they started just feeding the subscription model beast. It became watered down and a shell of it's former self.

There is a reason D&D has stuck around, some people just want community, challenge, lore. EQ tapped into that. It certainly isn't without it's faults, but it remained true to those core 3 values which appeals to the true nerds.

as someone who only played eq for a long time, after i tried wow, i literally cannot look at eq the same anymore.
Was literally like living in a cave and seeing the light of day.

Eq is a nice lil game, but its crazy how boring this game really is once you take a step back from it.

im a fan of the world first racing...i could never participate but its incredible what the top 100 or so players are able to do

this one has been intense, bosses 5 and 6 are so tightly tuned, they talk about needing to be "pixel perfect" for 6.5 minutes straight, zero room for error

Had a friend who did mystic raids and he said they become just stressful not in a fun way. Bosses have ridiculous amounts of phases/mechanics and the fights go on and on and on requiring everyone being perfect, he says

It blows my mind that these sweaties spend supposedly 18ish hours a day making attempt after attempt until the total gets sometimes to the 800s at how many minutes per attempt? Of the exact same thing? Pass

Also makes me wonder how they get the gold, because I've heard it's quite a lot blown for a round of attempts. My guess is they have a simp army of recruits wanting to be part of the sweatiest "A team" who is on gold farm duty. Like the team waterboys. Or else they buy it. Or a combination of both

the top teams are paid...they're flown into a gaming center where they are cooked for by chefs, sleep, and are coached in real time during the raids

the raid leader doesnt play, he watches multiple viewpoint streams and calls strats in real time

Things change because it’s decades

The community I hear is worse than ever, toxic with usually a complete min/max focus. All builds and gear setups can be plugged into some simulator website/program which has determined what the best is, and everyone just tries to copy that single setup, at least the ones that care about min/max do

Old content I hear can be soloed. Current content has a number difficulty rank for dungeons/raids that you have to get keyed for by beating the previous ones. The higher the number gets the more mechanics that mobs and bosses have in addition to more stats. And the dungeons have a time limit. Not sure about the raids though. My friend showed me a Reddit post where someone who was doing high level mythic dungeons was getting 70+ applicants for 3 dps spots. This is all done inside the WoW game on signup pages

World of Warcraft is 2004. It's 20 years old. Vanilla WoW deserves the same treatment as classic EQ.

I have a lot of fond memories of that time, including starting a fairly successful guild on Durotan called Shadow Order. I might log on again for a bit actually. I'm feeling nostalgic.
