View Full Version : Does anyone play only one class?

Is it just me or is this game basically an alt-o-holic type of game? Seems like everyone plays at least two classes on a consistent basis as there doesn't seem to be one class that scratches all the itches.
Wondering if there is anyone out there who pretty much exclusively plays just one class 99% of the time. If so, what class is that and why do you prefer to stick to that one alone?

alts are for nerds
Dress wearing rangers are for closet crossdressing choads.

Were all hopelessly addicted, once one character is leveled and they become raid only the only next step to scratch that itch is a new toon.

I've met a few players over the years who play and level multiple clerics. The different races of cleric add noticeable flavor. There are different approaches to cleric play - solo root-and-nuke, group healbot, enchanter sidekick.
There are a few people who don't have an alt.
But overall, I think your perception is correct: that most players try different classes. It's one of my favorite parts of the game!

think the only class this would work for is enchanter

I have a fair share of alts but when i was actively playing alot, Id basically only play my enchanter unless i had a specific need for one of my alts.
Which most of my alts were born out of a desire for a certain utility.
I made my necro to do chardok aoe.
I made my mage for chardok aoe also.
I made my warrior because my guild had a lack of ST keyed tanks at the time
I made my bard to sell powerlevels (ended up really loving my bard though)
i made my rogue because wife wanted to play sk and we thought itd be fun to fear kite to level.
I made my 2nd warrior to troll vanquish.
My paladin was probably my only alt i made because i actually thought it would be fun and just wanted to try the class out.
But my enchanter was the only character that id always play when the options were open. My highest level character on retail is an enchanter, and im maining an enchanter on oakwynd as well. Really love the class even post charm destruction

It's basically this and shamans, maybe necro. Both classes can solo and group. Both classes benefit a lot from any items you buy or spend DKP on. Both classes have gate and can move around.
Any other class is gonna have some kind of shortcoming you're most likely gonna wanna scratch at some point with an alt. Heck, even with a shaman or enc you still probably wanna try something else.

During the original timeline you saw a lot more people who basically played one character. New content and expansions at regular intervals meant only the neck-ly-est of neckbeards has accomplished everything before the next expansion rolled out.
Alts on p99 are mostly a function of us never getting new content.
I bet if AAs were introduced you would see a THRIVING xp group game and a lot fewer actively played alts … ( for about a year or 2)

I only played a single toon (a Mage) exclusively for about four years on Green (from its inception until recently, but with a long break).
I'd probably still be playing him exclusively today if I raided, but after my break I found it hard to just "dip my toe" back into raiding (due to raid attendance requirements it's really an all or nothing deal). Instead I went back to playing my Blue toons about half the time.
But it was never because I was sick of my Mage. He still has lots I want to do with him ... if I can ever get back into raiding.

There are plenty of people who have alts but have one main for gearing/raiding purposes.

I have run into a couple real megachads that only play a rogue. They usually don't speak in voice comms, and usually have full BiS on their rogue and play for 2 years until quitting. Their DPS is sorely missed when they finally retire - but their legacy lives on forever.

This phenomenon is more a function of P99 than EQ in general. I tried a bunch of classes back on classic live in the early days and landed on bard, played bard exclusively back then until I left the game and started as a bard main on P99. The new content schedule worked out that as the top players starting to reach the end of progression that new content would come out and extend the things to accomplish on your singular main character.
What happens is you hit a point where there is no more progression for your main class on P99 and so you either call it quits and leave P99 or you start making alts. Add to it that there isn't a monthly cost to maintaining each login in and folks can have unlimited accounts of alts. This is really the biggest departure from classic live to P99, the sheer amount of accounts, alts, and bots.

Yeah that's probably a fair point. On live, for quite awhile people had way less knowledge about things like how to most efficiently exp, the best places to go, etc. so leveling took longer than it does here. Plus the expansions were moving somewhat quickly so it wasn't like you got to the end of Velious with a main and then had all the time in the world to just level countless alts, you'd always need to keep some level of focus on your main.
On P99, I have multiple chars who I would define as a "main" in the sense that I play them regularly. On live in the classic era I had a couple alts and one serious "main".

Plus iirc it was the next expansion after velious, shadows of luclin, that introduced AAs and created an almost endless amount of time that you could grind exp on your singular main character to continue to power them up.

Could never be me, I’m a raging alt-aholic. I have nine 60’s on p1999 and currently leveling a second Ranger (54) and a Shadowknight (53). Part of why I love p1999 is it’s given me tons of time to try and level every class

I challenged myself to play a single character on Green. I wanted to make a super mature raid class character that would make an impact at every raid. I settled on a Monk and couldn't be happier.
Instead of showing up with some jank alt, I wanted to folks to say "Thank god, Guhtz is here. Everything is going to be ok."
That was the vibe I was going for.

Come raid with us in Castle. We dont have any requirements outside of some level requirements for certain raids. We are a "come as you are" guild who gets Vuulak kills.
I'm ultra casual and still get my fix when I need it.

Thanks; I actually considered Castle, as you do seem like a good lot ... but I'm still in Kingdom, and they relaxed the requirements temporarily to let me get back into raiding (eg. I can access the batphone now despite my absence).
Ironically the only thing stopping me from raiding at this point is that I can't get Discord to give me notifications from that batphone. I turned them off when I wasn't raiding, and now (despite enabling notifications in every setting possible, uninstalling and reinstalling the app, etc.) I can't get any Discord notifications.
Supposedly Discord tech support is going to get back to me, but ... Might have to wait until I get a new phone just to raid!

So many dudes flying around blue.Norrath recently for no other reason than helping bros level up their alts. Absolutely blasted through the first 30 levels on my most recent one.
I want to shout out these folks for their kindness and support. Big thank you!
Does Green have a similar alt levelling environment?

There are at least three of us! I exclusively played a cleric on live, and mostly play a cleric now, but... if anyone had told me in 2001 (when I started playing) that rangers can bark arrows at things? World might be a different place.

When i played in 98... I played a hef paladin and got to about 49. When i played p99 years ago, i played a hef paladin. When i played p99 again a year or two ago... I played a hef paladin. Nothing else ever.

I have been playing only necro's and got one to 60 hardcore / permadeath ^ ^, It is an extremely fun class with a lot of optimization to learn over time :)
I plan on branching out soon though to enchanter / bard

Highly recommend trying an Enchanter. I rolled one as an alt for the first time and it's fun.
For soloing, I levelled only in places I'd either never levelled in before or hadn't XPed in significantly. With the Enchanter's toolkit for safe travelling and ability to conquer basically any camp you can basically go anywhere. It was fun travelling to random things (like those dudes on the iceberg in TD) and trying out off the beaten path places (which technically yes you can do with any class, but I found it very fun as an Ench).

I don't know how people stick to one class. Especially when it's hit 60 and is well geared with not much left to improve.

I think that depends on the class and how much you play.
A Wizard? You still won't find groups for plat camps. There are few if any really worthwhile solo plat camps. All you can do is raid but the class isn't even worth gearing aside from vanity-purposes.
An enchanter? You can solo, group and every bit of raid gear will help improve what your class can do. Good at any point in the game, Fresh or Velious. Unless you play a LOT you're not gonna run out of things to do any time soon. The class also has a fair bit of depth, unlike e.g. Wizard.
Another good pick is Shaman. I'd also say classes like Monk or even Cleric for their own reasons are good "the one and only"-class picks.

Melee/healers/pure casters have different playstyles and it just keeps the game interesting sometimes.
Played a wizard on live and loved chucking sunstrikes at stuff tearing out big chunks of HP or just outright deleting anything under 46... But do that for years and it gets dull. Everybody has their boredom threshold though so more power to them if they like backstabbing stuff for years. Even chanter, a class with a ton of depth, gets boring when you smashed 2 mobs together for 48 levels and beyond.
But I think the biggest advantage of having a bunch of alts is a better understanding of class capabilities and how they mesh together. Makes it easier to see the potential/strategies when you're stuck with a subpar group composition.
