I guess Stellaris was sorta close but I couldn't get into it reliably.

idk if you tried stellaris when it first released or later, but they've improved it considerably since that very rocky release.
MicroProse games in general have yet to see a good spiritual successor, MoO2 as well as Master of Magic which is another classic.
