Recently, I've become interested in the various online cultures that developed on the various EverQuest servers. Watching the adventures of Janes the green server cleric (Sage Freke on youtube) I learned that gfay was the trading hub on at least one blue server. And we all know that some servers actually had very friendly raid rotations, while others embraced the chaos of racing one another to raid targets.
What made your server the unique experience it was, and why was your EQ experience more interesting than it would have been on other servers? Why did the culture on your server develop the way it did?
In trying to articulate my thoughts about why EQ was a better social experience than WoW, I keep coming up with the thought that the increased freedom on EQ servers resulted in a greater variation of MMO culture.

I started on Povar in 1999. It was the only server I ever played on live, it eventually merged with ayonae ro. I can't really say what made it more interesting than other servers, I know we had both gfay, north freeport and the EC tunnel as trade hubs that were all used roughly equally. I eventually joined Triton who were one of the longest running hardcore raid guilds from classic. I was 13 at the time, it was pretty epic.
Ultima Online had more interesting server personalities due to the non-instanced housing system and player-made towns tho.

Started on Solusek Ro but moved to Tallon Zek when it opened. Quit when Prophecy of Ro came out.
Came back when the Mayong Mistmoore 51/50 server opened. This was when Seeds of Destruction was current. Played on Mayong until it closed and got transfered to FV. Played there ever since.
Not happy with the direction of the game in the past few expansions so I haven't played much. Mobs have absurd HP.

The server I spent the most time on was Erollisi Marr. When emarr was down, or I had nothing to do/didn't want to burn a corpse timer, I would play on Rallos Zek.
The top guild on emarr was Da`Kor; the first to clear airplane(?).
Early in the server, the trading hubs were split. There was gfaydark on a certain day (sunday?). That only lasted so long, and it was only ecommons afterwards.
Before Velious, the raid scene was not great, but it was also very undeveloped. When TOV was an option, if a guild could kill Aaryonar by themselves, they would be put into the rotation for ntov. This was player enforced; not gms.

Veeshan. It was, of course, top heavy with FoH. A lot of great people, a lot of asshats, and a lot of drama. All in all, a proper server-community. Best guild was Valhall.

played mostly on Innoruuk and Bertox, but dabbled on a few others
it was always EC for trading as far as I recalled, how did that work in GFay? for NFP, assume everyone just jammed the bank and the surrounding area
Rodcet Nife: '99- some time after ldon. I was (still am!) just a dumb cleric and didn't pay attention to the raid scene.

Was also on Erollisi Marr with my RL family. And yes The trading was mostly done in EC, I somewhat remember Gfay trading, but porting wasn't nearly a thing and screw that boats back then. But yeah raiding was interesting, It was a lot of smaller guilds just coming together to down stuff like Naggy/Trak etc.(since voice wasn't a big thing, we always used the server chat rooms to set up these, and when to log back in after buffing) Velious is when the raid scene changed to be guild dependent set rotations. Which was super nice. I felt like the server as a whole was very anti toxic. If you KS, Ninja'd, trained others. The server knew about you, and you were black listed. Also remember GM's on the server loved to mess with players in Oasis, always seemed to take control of an SG or Orc wizzy to murder hobo players:) I also remember the GM event in Everfrost, where they attacked halas with a bunch of Ice giants, had a bunch of zone messages and such. Was really fun.

the wife and i were on errolisi marr also (2000-2007). i remember ec being the main hub for trading and never having enough plat to buy anything good though. we didnt really join raiding until GoD and OoW and instancing was a thing. .
we were in smaller family type guilds early on - Order of Flaming Shrine, Anlah'Shok. then we joined Crimson Eternity to raid later. we had a small group of buddies that we followed or followed through it all.

why tho
Honestly? No specific reason other than, Fennin Ro is the only server I played on during live. Question though-
I wasn't playing P99 when The Mystical Order was dominant, but they were the top guild on Fennin Ro when I was playing live. Was that guild big across multiple servers back in the day? Or are they the same crew that ran the show on Fennin Ro? Just curious....

Rodcet Nife from start to just after Luclin. 3rd or possibly 4th server to awaken the Sleeper
Avatars of Discord guild, original powerhouse guild on server. When I came to P99 that guild was made with some old folks from it, all long since gone now I believe

Veeshan, where trade was done in North Freeport. Imagine my surprise finding out that on all other servers it was done in EC Tunnel.

I played on Tallon Zek from 2000-2004 - mostly through highschool and first year of college. Due to the sever being a team pvp (humans, darkies, elves, shorties) there was a wide variety of social norms and customs. For example, the majority of players fell into the "humans + elves + shorties vs the darkies", so there was a lot of guilds and players that "cross teamed" based by "good vs evil" races. Many characters and guilds refused to cross team at all and were explicitly focused on their own team. A small minority - usually the heavy hitting pvp guilds - were cross-team with darkies, so anyone can join. This dynamic played out really well, you knew if you saw a darkie race somewhere they were most likely a threat, but other races - not so much. Though I would say that towards the upper tier levels, and towards 2003-2004 I felt that there was far less hostility to cross-teaming across all teams. Commonlands were largely massive pvp zone and were rarely if ever used as a trade hub. Gfay was a large trade hub for "lighties". Playing a Dark Elf, Iksar, Troll or Ogre was a far more socially unique experience for me, I felt that players who were one of these races were often far more friendlier and willing to help you because it kind of felt like you were always outnumbered.
Another fun thing was that "Magic Resist" armor was by far the most in demand and most expensive. I found it strange that on non-pvp servers MR gear didn't matter much at all.
Honestly, the 8 level range (8 levels above or below you is allowable targets for pvp) was a brilliant system that prevented hardcore griefing which I felt every other mmorpg just miserabaly suffers from. Yeah, there were highly twinked out characters, but even 8 levels above you attacking you had a chance to escape, and even a chance to somehow beat them back. It prevented lv 60s from going into a mid-range zone and just slaughtering people.
I really miss the times I had on that server a lot.

I was on Bertoxxulious (sp?) initially, until it was merged into Terris-Thule, which was later merged into Prexus or something.
I was never involved in server politics back then and raided casual stuff like vindi/velketor/kunark dragons through Velious and Luclin, then moved on to the #2 or #3 raid guild for planes a power and raided up through PoTime.
Classic through Velious, top guild was Valon, and then later eclipsed by Clan ta Veren in Luclin maybe. I don't remember things being toxic between guilds and I had a lot of pals across a lot of guilds and levels.
Overall, excellent server from my perspective.

I was on Tribunal from its launch until the Legends server xe out. I started two guilds and ended up having leadership of both stolen from me; Heroes of Valor and Guardians of Faydwer. I don't remember the top guild's name, but I remember the leader of it was named Crush, he was a human warrior. I also made friends with our server GM Ignaurus (aka Ignore Us) who would go on to be Yakatizma and the lead crafting developer. We're still connected on Steam and LinkedIn though we haven't chatted in a while.
I jumped servers a little bit, joining Royal Norrathian Guard on Torv or Tholuxe don't remember which. Tried Stormhammer (Legends server) and ended my career on Firiona Vie before moving on to City of Heroes.

I played on Mithaniel Marr from summer '99 to summer '03. I definately remember our trading hub being at N Freeport as well and was really disoriented to find it somewhere else here. Only had one character get past level 20, and that was my dwarven cleric Olvar who managed to hit 51. I think our guild was Council of Trust? Provider and his wife Knoxen were the guild leaders. Really miss those days...

I started gaming with Ultima Online and went straight to EQ when that launched. UO had an exciting and hardcore PVP system so I naturally gravitated toward the Rallos Zek server. Later on Sullon Zek. In my experience, nothing else in gaming creates the lasting memories quite like guild wars and massive PVP battles. Raiding doesn’t compare, not even close. Back in my teenage years I remember I also really enjoyed the trash talk, the tears and drama that often accompanies PVP. Now that I’m older, I don’t really care about that aspect anymore but I still like to keep my options open with having PVP available, which is why Red is the best for me.
Rallos Zek only server to kill the Sleeper. Also Best of the Best winners…was there any doubt? :D

I started on Veeshan playing a Teir'dal Necromancer on my friends account, as he actually had internet and a computer that would play it. Made my own account, played an Erudite Wizard, of which I have many fond memories of. The main trade hub was Freeport and to a lesser extent Greater Faydark.

Played a rogue and a wizard on Tholuxe Paells from January 2000 through 2004. Some of the guilds I remember being in was a Korean guild called Aasadal led by an ogre female warrior named Khangsoon (great leader, super funny). Also was a member of Crimson Banditos! Awesome, awesome group of people that I still think of playing with sometimes.
When Luclin came out, it was great fun to go into the Bazaar and watch people joust in the arena downstairs. Spent a ton of time watching this ogre beastlord named Maynarrd Jameskeenan and his huge ass bear destroy literally anyone who wanted to 1v1 him.
I think the top guilds were Rebirth (can't remember original name, but they changed to Kupo Flux) and a guild called Paradigm Nocturne, who were constantly at each others throats.
