After many years of internet memes going over my head I finally realised that trolling is derived from trawling. And yesterday I found out what u jelly meant. I'm on a roll.

what is trawling? what is the signature of?

I just assumed trolling came from a troll picking fights and being a jerkface.

Trawler = boat with great big net scooping up fish. We are the fish.

Except when Japan is trawling, then we are sadface minky whales.

so is that actually where the term trolling comes from, or is that just a coincidence?

Trawling is a method of fishing that involves pulling a fishing net through the water behind one or more boats. The net that is used for trawling is called a trawl.

The boats that are used for trawling are called trawlers. Trawlers vary in size; from small open boats with only 30 hp engines to large factory trawlers with over 10,000 hp. Trawling can be carried out by one trawler or by two trawlers fishing cooperatively (pair trawling).

Trawling can be contrasted with trolling, where baited fishing lines instead of trawls are drawn through the water. Trolling is used both for recreational and commercial fishing whereas trawling is used mainly for commercial fishing. Trawling is also commonly used as a scientific sampling, or survey, method.

So basically, Trolling is baiting a hook, and going at a slow to medium speed, dragging your line behind you and waiting for bites..

Which is what forum trolling is. Say something outlandish/evocative/controversial to a community (bait your hook and drag your line) and wait for bites (lulz & popcorn).

From this concept trolling forums originally is derived..
It was simply a homonym for a troll, and thus evolved the idea of a forum troll.

Trolling is whenever a boat drops fishing lines in the water at a set depth then goes at a slow speed hoping to get bites from fish.

Its where the forum term 'trolling' originated from.

It is also my sig. I thought more people would know this =P

1. Hater

A person that simply cannot be happy for another person's success. So rather than be happy they make a point of exposing a flaw in that person.

Hating, the result of being a hater, is not exactly jealousy. The hater doesnt really want to be the person he or she hates, rather the hater wants to knock somelse down a notch.
Susan: You know, Kevin from accounting is doing very well. He just bought a house in a very nice part of town.
