You're leaving out the part about the player agreement specifying that we all sit back a ways, instead of sitting on top of, or next to, Shady.

This was part of the agreement because it was brand new, and not everyone was respecting it. Remember, there was no GM enforcement back then, and there was a legitimate concern about one bad actor not waiting to roll and just racing to click Shady (which had happened).

The idea was to make it very clear who was following the agreement by asking them to sit back ... and that wasn't even my idea (I was just doing my part to help make the agreement a permanent thing by sharing the rules).
