I was talking with a friend of mine recently who also has gamed p heavily as a female, and she said something to the effect of like, "my female-ness and feminine qualities are not appreciated w men gaming and it affected who I was in-game" or something like that. My first reaction was "pff idk is this another one of those ways women like to call for attention that they are, in fact, female in a male-dominated space?" which was my own bias there I guess.

Anyway, it's something I've noticed recently grouping. I like to TALK, and I've noticed dudes don't like to talk as much. My bias too is thinking people who talk are not as skilled or serious about the game, when actually they just enjoy having fun and fucking around more. The social experience and people-ing is a part of my enjoyment of gameplay, and doesn't interfere with my ability to go hard if shit starts going down.

I was noticing this in group today. She was right! I think women tend to be into connective aspects, and just genuinely enjoying the game itself without needing to be The Best Ever and prove themselves like that, even if they are super skillful players also. You know?

Since friend said this I've been noticing it grouping w female players. They like to have fun and build connection. Dudes sometimes seem to lean towards grinding hard and shutting up unless there's something Important to say. It's not universal but something I've had my eye on recently. Anyway, this is not gender discourse more just curious psychology

It used to be a fantasy of mine until after a few tries and thinking "I could totally bust out of these", the thrill was gone.

Same with blindfold. Really sucks, I wanted it to be fun.

While I do enjoy the psychology of the differences between men and women’s behavior there are many other factors that can influence people’s amount of communication

The most likely reason I always assume for someone being overly quiet in a group setting is that they have dual monitors and are either watching something or reading something else in between pulls. Lotta people are very used to multitasking these days. In fact with the advent of smartphones our ability to stay dialed in on a task seems to have gone way down

Hanging out with guys and gals in person I don’t see a huge gender-based difference in communication, it all depends on individual personality

But that’s just my experiences IRL, I think I’ve only grouped on p99 like 4 times total and am generally only chatty if other people are. I sort of base my communication level around them

Change "female players" to "female characters".

I've played MMO's off and on for 22 years. Early on, I innocently thought most female characters were women IRL. Found out years later nearly every. single. one. of my fellow 'female' guildies was a dude. (This was before voice chat was a thing). Let me tell you, some of these dudes were the most outgoing social butterflies you have ever, ever seen.

So I would say, it doesn't really have anything to do with who is a woman IRL.

I think it's more correlated that dudes people who play female characters in MMOs simply find an easier time being chatty, and prefer that via their own personality (or perhaps a willingness to roleplay how they think that character should be?)

And yes, as a female player I feel like your female friend at times. I am a newb and regardless of what people think of my playing skills, I give my best but don’t expect to be the best. I do feel that in terms being personable, guys are more quiet and difficult to approach.
When my boyfriend introduced me to this game, I would have never guessed I would fall in love with it. It is fun to get to know people (even though sometimes I am not sure if they are being truthful to me or not). I like to hear their stories and I try to open my heart to them because that is my way to make friends and also to feel more connected to them.
Some people see this as a mere game, I see it as a way to make friends you can take for life. I know I met some amazing people here with really fun stories and experiences to share. I look forward to meeting more of you soon hehehe.

Every server in eq, on live and here, has like a legacy of players who come and go and all have a little experience with each other, they're like spaceship colonies.

I like how everyone has similar issues with the same things.

Strange folks like some weirdo newspaper magnates son getting kicked from every guild and using voice mods to try to get back in for years and years and years.

Characters like Abacab who, when I first started on p99 treated me like an angel and just helped me learn the game, then I found out he was like the server's Joker.

Eq is a game about making worlds.

It is mildly interesting to learn another player is female irl because it makes them a slightly different type of NPC for my single player MMO drug addiction analogue experience.

I play with a girl like every time (paisley) and will say she is a super social player but also has problems staying on task sumtimes. Like if you ever see ANY other player out in the world she will get super excited and go ‘who is that??’ And go out of her way to say hi or emote with them. Apart from that though she’s generally able to stay on task but only in an actual group (probably because she doesn’t have to go out of her way to be social). But yea I definitely do see more of a social preference at least in her case.

My P99 characters are roughly 50/50 male/female. Back on live I didn't play female characters because the one time I did (high elf wizard) I had guys being creepy all the time and it was too much to keep explaining after getting to level 8 or so :rolleyes: The internet was a new thing.

Have been playing with another friend who is a girl, she has a more serious and focused personality and is learning the game super well

I do think being social is core to being female though, both my female friends who play this game get along very well with others and also have already become part of the forums. Like it’s a many-sided approach to getting involved with the community and hav already made some friends on discord too who play with us. Also we basically have a static xp group going and have made a ‘lizard family’ of sorts since all of our iksars were created at the same time. Idk how long we will be able to maintain a static group but for now it is really nice!

Men trying to act bravado in games, as if they were around a group of all men...not realizing the above statement; doesn't help for sure. From real life experience, there are many-many active, fit & attractive, with well-balanced successful careered women who play video games... including Everquest. Generally they broke into it either from, as a real world example, their NASA computer-science programmer father got his all female children into Everquest and later world of warcraft. They all did ballet as kids and grew up playing games with dad. So later in life, through life balance, they grew to be super hot, more knowledgeable in computers or that Vindi raid, then my all gamer butt. These girls were cousins of my high school friend, and first met them when they had an extra blizzcon ticket after all sitting around their 4 computers spam clicking "buy" button for blizzcon tickets, because Blizzcon ticekts instantly sell out in the first 1 second tickets go live. Women of all types are out there playing these same games right next to you...just have some decency and respect for those around you. You never know who you'll meet on the internet.
