View Full Version : It's time to consider revising the Naming Policy

With all due respect to the devs, guides, and GM's who have been managing the servers, and considering the intention of the policy involved, this was developed 13 years ago. Are names like Tablechair or Darksister really a relevant issue when it comes to naming a character? It is important to keep in mind that some people have gamertag monikers that they just default to when playing any game, and often turn into a compound name.
Obviously many of these policies make sense: obscene names, copyright infringement, CSR abuse totally make sense. But, hear me out, lets let Eggmuffin enjoy their game. They may not be the most creative player, but Eggmuffin enjoys roleplaying as a woodelf baker and joking around in groups about how she was raised by gullydwarves.
Let Nebuchadnezzar be a Nebuchad.
Let Brotherbarley be his brother's barley.
Let clericbotzerozeroone beep boop for all we care.
Let <Riot> infringe upon the copyright of largest gaming company in the world. *cough*
It's really not ruining anyone's 'immersion' at this point, they are quirky and silly and really not deserving of tying up CSR's time changing names and bloating petitions when many of these names have simply been around for years and years now without bothering anyone.
I say lets live and let live!

I know what you're going through. I too once fell under the spell of opium. It was 1979. I was travelling the Yangtze in search of a Mongolian horsehair vest. I had got to the market after sundown. All of the clothing traders had gone, but a different sort of trader still lurked about. ‘Just a taste,’ he said. That was all it took.

There are companies, literary works, songs, and musical acts with the word Riot in their name that pre-date Riot Games, op.
Riot is a dumb name for a guild, but I think all of those entities have concluded along the way what you are too stupid to realize. There has to be more than a shared common word to make it copyright infringement.

To me it's a simple question: are we trying to recreate EQ circa '99-'01 here, or are we not.
Because whatever the name policy says, it's clear from the names in-game that we are not.

The naming policy, followed to the letter, is overly strict I agree. And if everyone followed it we'd all have boring, generic, undecipherable vowel barf names.

I mean do what you want. You run the server, create any policy you want, and tbh gotta have a policy in place for the bad stuff.
But some of em are a little much imo. If it isn't abuse or harassment in some form why is it a big deal? Then again I'd just think if I was a guide I'd think changing a name like eggmuffin is so far down my list of priorities when there's constant RMT, raid disputes with footage to review, and 2 boxing checks... much more egregious situations. If you don't wanna group with Fartbarf because his name is Fartbarf, you're absolutely able to do so.
On that note... #JusticeforFartbarf

Yes offensive political sinful violent names should be banned.
Only exception is gnomes named after powertools like buzzsaw. Jackhammer. Drillface. Megatortch. Hightorque. Shortfuse etc...

Anyone named after real life foods or using their first/last to spell words needs to have their names flushed out the random name generator airlock.
They're intentionally a blight on Brad's great vision recreated here. This is literally their entire purpose for playing, to infest and degrade.
How do I know that? Everything they want is on TLP, and yet they persist here. Ask yourself why.

I'd take a rename on my chars for more elf immersion. I couldn't care less. Except for my druid, Hauling Derriere. That name is classic cuz I had that one in classic and it makes me feel the warm fuzzies.
Screw it, someone report that name too, I'll happily be Jerriolinas Ho'puthican or whatever bullshit Brad thought it should be.
Though, I don't care for Brad's name. It breaks my immersion. Who's named after a metal fastener anyway?

I know I'm late to the party on this thread but I didn't want to create a new post just to sound like a whinny old Gen Xer. Listen I have a very dirty and perverted sense of humor. I love a good dick and fart joke but when I see someone running around with the name poopsock or poosock it takes some of the legitimacy/classic-ness out of the game.

I am absolutely pro-enforcement of the original naming rules within the world of Norrath.
When I was Guide for EQ it was my everlasting joy to get tickets for names to review and get them nerfed when needed. There's no point in having naming rules if they aren't enforced. I've been in several MMOs, run multiple guilds, and those games that actually enforce their rules end up having better player bases overall. It sends a message to trolls, and the like, that they either need to play nice with others or find someplace else to play.
There's really no excuse for a name that violates the naming policy. The rules aren't that hard to follow. And yes, dumb names that have nothing to do with the genre, world, or lore do, in fact, break immersion for other players who have to look at that bad name or interact with that dumb character. It's passive-aggressive trolling to intentionally have a bad name just because one thinks it's 'cute' or funny.
It's not difficult to create a decent in-genre name. If one truly lacks the IQ or mental skillset to create a decent name, go find a fantasy name generator. There are dozen of those out there on the net.
(I'm new here and bound to make friends, or enemies, with this post! Of course, that's not my intention, but I know some people are just as passionate about a free-for-all naming policy as I am about nerfing every Ganddalf*, Jedimazter*, Toasterlover*, Lordoveru*, Crackpleasre*, etc there is.:p heeheehee)
*Any name referred to above was made up randomly as I wrote this and have no relationship to anyone in this game world. If someone is actually named one of those names, then it's purely coincidental... and shame on you!

So I'm gonna assume this is because of "Spags" to OP.... sure he can claim it is short for spaghetti all he wants but anyone that's Italian on this server prolly thinks it's the racist slang version. Therefore even if he yells spaghetti all he wants others can and will still perceive it to be the latter. Therefor it has to be changed even if there is just the chance it's racist. Due to that fact it can make Italian born players on our server feel uncomfortable.

IMO u shouldn't be able to pick you own name you should have to submit a request to the community and they will democratically pick your name for you.

Not true. People ... especially new people picking their first character's name ... believe the rules will be enforced, so it makes them pick good names.
Of course, then they get in the game, and realize that part of the PnP is ... not quite honest ... but it's been this way forever. I think the staff figures "if we cast a wide net, we can remove any flagrantly bad name", whereas if they tried to make the PnP match reality, some truly bad names might slip through.
The fundamental problem is that there is very little motivation to volunteer to be a GM here, and what few saints of human beings we do have are busy with stuff like resolving camp disputes between 40-year-old man-children. There was even a movement to "crowdsource" enforcement a few years back (players petitioned names that violated the policy en masse) ... and the staff told them to knock it off, presumably because they didn't have the bandwidth to handle it.
I suspect, once upon a time when they wrote the policy, the staff wanted classic names ... because they wanted classic everything here. But over time, as they've allowed things like pet windows, they've given up any hope of classic names (ie. enforcing their own PnP) ... because it just can't be done with their volunteer limitations.

ROFL no, It's not a power trip just because you don't agree. Rules exist for a reason. I was doing the job of simply enforcing the naming rules, and yes, I did enjoy taking dumbf@#k names that didn't belong in Norrath out of the gaming world. I enjoyed it just as much as those same dumbf@#k players who thought it was funny to name themselves "Hittinmymeat". Follow the rules, and there's no need to get your name nerfed. It's that simple.
After over 20 years of playing MMOs, I agree with the poster above that suggested that no one should be allowed to name themselves. ...Because clearly after 2 decades of watching people name their characters f@#ked-up names, too many just have no idea how to RESPECT the world they are in or the players who have to see their idiotic names floating over their heads. I think everyone should be forced into auto-generated names (in one way or another, like you get some options, etc) and if you want a custom name, you petition a GM for it and pay a fee for the service. This would solve the majority of all naming issues so that GMs can focus on other matters rather than babysit childish players who can't be mature enough to properly name themselves.
