View Full Version : "Boxing" question

I'm getting ready to start up again, and am thinking about playing with my 10-year old daughter. I have the IP exceptions already, did that a few years back but she was definitely too young then and didn't have the attention span. Now she's into 5E D&D and more interested in gaming in general, and we've played WoW a bit.
My question is wondering how ridiculous people are about reporting perceived boxing? She always autofollows me around in WoW and is pretty useless in fights lol, I end up doing most of the work. I can see somebody seeing us, thinking she's being boxed, and reporting it, and the policy seems to be an insta-ban without any real investigation? I have no desire to even start up with her here if that's going to happen.
Am I overestimating the likelihood of that?

You will be given a proper boxing test if you are suspected. Chances are good you'll be petitioned by somebody. GM will show up invis, and study you for a bit, and then you'll be offered a chance to make both of your characters perform certain movements. That will be your time to shine...

OK, so it's not just report ticket received... BAN! That makes me fell a little better about it, thanks. I remember years ago we got an IP ban for my wife and I playing together, and she was a veteran EQ player and was actively doing stuff, lol. That's when we had to apply for the IP exception.

What makes me concerned about it being reported is that I'm 100% certain I could actually 2box and look more like 2 people than when I play anything with her, haha.

TLDR, OP plans to two box and pretends to have procreated.

Hahaha ignore the trolls.. My guess is there are probably more folks legitimately playing with their significant others or children with IP exemptions, then there is folks actually trying to pull off boxing..
And it's not strange to just see 2 players sitting around, or only 1 moving.. I think the times you run into dickheads reporting you, is when you maybe are at a camp they traveled for, and they get mad and throw the'ol hail mary by /petition Cgatton is boxing!!!!
But more times than not, you're gonna be safe.. I think the boxing test is both characters have to perform figure 8's or something.. They are all movement based tests. But yeah you will be given a fair trial.

TLDR- If you just don't want to deal with chumps false reporting you, just stay off the beaten paths and insanely popular camps. That would be my advice...

Hell no, I'd never trust the kid to heal, lol. Other way around, I always play a healer with her.
The good news is nobody cares if you read anything. I received an answer to my question.

You don't get insta banned and the way you presented this question as such should not surprise you of people's response. At 10 and playing mmos your kid should have no issues passing a boxing test

My son who is disabled and only has 1 arm loves playing with me. He is a bit slow though, so he usually sits nearby or is on /follow. He loves playing a cleric, but his condition means that he usually only manages to press complete heal

Seriously just teach her to play the game solo if she can't play the game alone then she shouldn't be doing labor tasks for you anyways. The fact that she is capable of hitting buttons for you does not mean you will get a softer boxing test.
The game isn't that hard. Let her choose a class and race and actually play the game, if you think it is healthy for your kid to play such games.

I'm not sure you have to worry about that too much even if you did let them try it. The big things with today's children seem to be Minecraft or Roblox. By and large they aren't all that interested in old video games any more than I as a child was interested in my old man's stories of the 1930's era B&W serials from his own youth.

dude I see people 2 and 3 box all the time in some leveling zones, no one really cares. the servers don't have enough population to worry about shit like that. i ask them, most of the time they are foreigners in south America. imo, most people are just happy to see another player in the zone, and don't care if it's a box thing or not. I haven't reported any of them either, don't see a reason to really since it's just a very old game.

Well even if you’re jolly about it, it remains a bannable action here and people are banned for it on a regular basis. If you care about your character long term, don’t box.

Thanks for this info, it cleared up a few things for me. I am relieved to hear that they give you a chance to demonstrate that you're not boxing.
I was recently granted an IP Exemption for my GF. I was planning on giving her some platinum, a few items, like a backpack or two and maybe some other items that she could use.
It was never really made clear, to my satisfaction, if this might it be misconstrued as boxing. I wasn't sure how to avoid the appearance of impropriety.

There are things you can do to make it more obvious to everyone the other character is indeed a second person.
a) You'll reduce the number of others who think you're boxing simply by NOT having the same surnames. I encountered this personally. My paladin and my wife's cleric have the same surname and some players assumed it was boxing for that reason alone. These self-appointed internet sleuths aren't exactly Sherlock Holmes! Lo and behold, on our shadow knight/shaman duo, which have different surnames, nobody ever accuses us of boxing.
b) Never use auto-follow
c) See to it that both characters are active at the same time. If a cleric sits there and does nothing at all but stand up and cast complete heal once in awhile, folks are going to think you're boxing. If that same cleric is actively helping out with stuff, maybe pulling itself, tossing out stuns, etc, folks will notice that.
d) If your partner is AFK and something like a train happens, don't run across the room to the other computer to try to move it, let it die. Not only will folks notice the afk person dying to the train as the afk person should, but saving it in that manner actually DOES violate the boxing policy.
e) If the other person isn't on, she isn't on. If she has a druid but isn't on, she doesn't log on just to port you, you find someone else or hire a Dial just like everyone else does. I know it's annoying because it's trivial for a person to stop what they're doing for a few minutes for something like that, but in this type of case appearances go a long way.
Note that the staff, if they suspect a boxer, will normally hang out in GM-invisible mode and watch you for awhile before they make their presence known and do their little anti-boxing test. If it's obvious enough you're separate people they won't even do it. They're not looking to pick on you. I've played P99 along with my wife since P99 opened, over 12 years now, and in that time we've never once been subjected to the "boxing test." Simply put, if you don't want to look like you're boxing, then don't do stuff that looks like boxing.

It would help prove your innocence if you stream. Also this would give you a side-hustle to work on.

Soooo... there are not enough people playing. You can't solo most classes without others helping you. Boxing is banned ...and the game is 23 years old. Does anyone else see an issue with those things when combined?
My GF and her 6yo grand daughter both play and they are better than most of the 40yo virgins still playing this game. If I get banned for sharing an IP address I will find better things to do with my time.

There are plenty of people playing still. There is no issue. You're only going to get banned if you're controlling more than 1 character per 1 person. If you do so and get caught, good riddance.
