But it will require a quantum leap in AI and game design. I think the pieces are starting to get in place though. After 20+ years we may finally move on from everquest 1.

It would probably be the things Devs have tried to do, but failed to do.

Sometimes the reason is technological limitations. This happens for a lot of movies, would-be movies, and books not-yet-ready-for-movies.

Another reason is poor implementation and execution. It can be balance, it can be look/feel, it can be fun factor.

The final reason is marketing. Simply put, something is promised, but something else is delivered.

Any games that implement NFTs will go full-boar RMT. Expect lots of bots farming items to sell on secondary markets. NFTs make it so you could potentially automate the whole process.

Having "real player" identifiers in game to distinguish from bots, would be helpful.

The future of MMOs and gaming will be crazy.

Without enough money behind a project you could have entire teams dedicated to formerly "nice-to-haves" like crafting systems, weather/terrain, etc.

I believe we will see some sort of game in the future that is VERY detailed, maybe exclusively VR or at least VR-capable.

Yes, i have seen talk of it. Guys are psyched that it will be the new best thing, these are promises made before such as the digital download era being a time of wonder when in reality I played few titles during it. i really should have got off this ride back in 2007.

I don't think it will be any one 'feature' that defines or sets it apart from the rest. But high polish and I personally hope focus on the core game-play and content as opposed to payment models / hooks.

As mentioned prior, NFTs intertwined with in-game usability are the next major MMO breakthrough in my mind. NFTs with utility (entertainment) will be quite the sight to see when it comes to fruition. We'll see if it can scale though, I don't think we're there yet.

As a thought experiment, I find it interesting that the way items are generated in classic Everquest play well in a future where NFTs are commonplace. Imagine game items like Manastones, Fungi Staves, etc trackable on a blockchain.

Personal feelings on this aside, I think this path is inevitable.

Both unreal 2 and quake3 were because of the thousands of levels and skins and all of the mods. Servers could allow autodownloading Levels as well.

So many good levels and even the popular ones had rethemes between different servers.

Warcraft 3 was another game with an amazing map editor for creating custom games. Some of my favorite old games were wc3 custom games.

Starkind - Yeah I really miss all the custom levels from Unreal tournament. So many awesome levels. I loved the toy story levels that happened before toy story, where a room and its regular items are the barriers in the level. So much fun in those glorious times.

Then in rainbow six ravenshield there were amazing custom pistols only and sniper rifles only levels. I ruled at the glass levels where you can see through all the barriers and have to get the drop on a guy anyways. So much fun.

The present overdesigned bullshit games are less fun. No question.
