Being an adult kinda sucks lol. My irl social friend group right now consists of four people who meet every other friday (or so) bc we all have different job/school/life responsibilities. It's a book club with an open bar, basically. My goal with my book choices is to try to get everyone to cry bc that's just the sorta person I am :P
So I need some good ideas for books!
Incomplete (I'm just sure of it) list of books that have made me cry:
Harry Potter 7 (the part where Hermione, Ron, and Harry go to talk to Luna's dad and they find the mural she painted of them)
Probably other Harry Potter books but I don't remember which ones or why
Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine
Stranger in a Strange Land
Tuesdays with Morrie
The Little Prince
To Kill a Mockingbird
The Diamond Age
I have The Fault in Our Stars on my to read list.

Atlas shrugged made me cry during the monologue.
Fountainhead made me cry SORRY PETER
Anthem made me cry that it ended so soon
The Road ended way too early again.
I just really dislike ending books, I want to be at that middle 60% forever

Ayn Rand is a fantastic story teller and you don't even need to prescribe to objectivism. I would go
1. Anthem 110pg or so
2. Fountainhead 900ish
3. Shrugged big boi
Also, ASOFAI was given to me, and I read up to Dance with Dragons in two weeks. Its been like ten years since then. I really dislike slow writers now. They are fun books to read very slowly though, as descriptive as tolkien +3 when describing food.
The Road can be skipped surmised as the Movie doesn't miss anything but two small scenes.
I also recommend older style kindle and pirate them books, all information is free

Yes. I'm not opposed to reading Rand at all, just never got around to it. ASOIAF is straight gut-wrenching at times lol.

Hanks
Christ, he's crying again. What set him off this time?!
Marcus goes into a flashback. It shows that many years ago mine carts came to his homeland and murdered his family in cold blood. The flashback ends and Marcus stares into empty space.Anderson
Come on Marcus, snap out of it. We're here for you.
Hanks (laughing)
Maybe you should suck his dick Anderson. Come on you crybaby queer, get in the fucking mine cart!
Suddenly the Locust appear and kill Anderson and Hanks. Marcus snaps out of his trance and jumps into the mine cart. With tears streaming down his face he makes his escape.Marcus
This world is so corrupt...With that Marcus attempts to slit his wrists with the chainsaw thingy on his gun. Cue Gary Jules - Mad World.
Fade out.

when gandalf fell into the volcanoe :(
OK so Gandalf did not fall down the volcano but it was a calculated move to protect the fellowship and more importantly to ensure the ring did not fall into the wrong hands. Then he fights the fucking things for WEEKS on end as it is shape shifting and eventually they fight BACK up the entire fucking thing then are they are both laid to rest Gandalf is DEAD and possessed by a new immortal spirit and becomes Gandalf the white, no longer grey as he has lost the human quality of a wandering Wotan figure.
I CAN SEE HOW THE FIRST TIME READING YOU MIGHT THINK HE BE DEAD THOUGH

I have teared up throughtout the entire Storm Light Archive series. Kaladin Stormblessed is a tortured soul. The scene that most recently got me was he has basicaly been dealing with battle shock and has PTSD and cant fight anymore. Some shit happeneds and he finds himself in a position where he is going to have to go beast mode.
Kaladin stood with one hand on the wall, one hand on the door, breathing deeply. Wind surged through the window behind, brushing past him, bearing with it two twisting windspren that moved as lines of light.
“Kaladin …” Syl said, landing on his shoulder.
“It was a nice dream, wasn’t it, Syl?” he asked. “That we could escape? Find peace at long last?”
“Such a wonderful dream,” she whispered.
“You ready for this?” he asked. She nodded.

Good picks. The Grapes of Wrath never made me cry, and I think even Steinbeck said he kinda painted a rosier picture than was the reality. Even though he killed off so many characters and wrote a true tragedy.

Interesting. The one guy in our book club picked Into the Wild as his first book, and Supertramp character was an avid reader of Jack London among many others. I'd never really read that genre of wilderness adventure book but a lot of people seem to like them. I wonder how many young men have died after getting super into these books.

Honestly don't think a book has made me cry. Then I try to go back over the list of books I've read it's mostly Catch-22, 1984, The Stranger, Notes from the Underground, Nausea, Waiting for Godot, Fahrenheit 451, A Long Way Gone (This one *may* have), Skinny Bitch, Hobbit / LoTRs, Foundation Trilogy, Dark Tower Series, Dark Elf Trilogy, bunch of Steven King and RL Stein, half of Dracula, and a couple Anne Rice books. Julius Ceasar / Romeo and Juliet (maybe this one too), Game of Thrones series, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy. Rant and Invisible Monsters (LOVE this book). Siddhartha.
That's probably the majority. Not too many tear jerkers.

omg cecily.
some great books here, and some i've never read! my dad wanted me to read catch-22 forever ago. i'll look into a long way gone, it looks very sad.
but you absolutely should read eleanor oliphant is completely fine! i found it on the list of books for infps on goodreads and sort of picked it on a whim but it hit me so hard, and the titular character is hilarious. it's set in scotland and i love eleanor more than i do most people i know irl.

Saw the Stormlight Archives mentioned. Refuse to the read the post because I’m afraid of spoilers. I’m just over halfway through book 1 now and I’m pretty well hooked.
I guess ASOIAF made me cry, but only because the first three books were good and then the fourth was so shitty I literally threw it across the room and quit. He took all the shit characters and put them in one book. Seriously who the fuck cares about the ironborn? Plus he’s never going to finish it.

Indeed. Christ's sermon on the mount (Matthew 5-7) never ceases to induce lamentation, remorse, and a spiritual sense of blissful joy. We are provided instructions for how we are to live our lives.
