View Full Version : Why do you still play?

I left p99 for classic WoW when it launched and have been loving it ever since. I don't miss elf jail for fighting the wrong mobs or staring at walls. I login twice a week to raid at the same time and pvp or lvl alts whenever I want. I've enjoyed reading these boards but the quality (including this post) have gone downhill significantly since the dragons got rooted. I think this is tied to the state of the game and am curious what any of my homies who are still around, or anyone, think.
So I ask you this, why do you still play? Is it to spend the mountain of DKP you've been hoarding for some NToV or Tunare loot? Is it for your guildmates/community? Is it for the feels of nostalgia?
About the only thing I'm interested in seeing happen is the warders (never got warder loot when I played) and when the sleeper is inevitably woken. Although, knowing how this server works, the sleeper will probably get woken at 4am on Tuesday or like Thanksgiving day or something hahaha.
Anyway, genuinely curious what people are enjoying here still. Hope all is well :)

Some of us genuinely love the game itself, and even playing it in all its boring grindy form. I know this is a foreign concept to younger gamers, WoW gamers, and many raiders who are more into strats, practice, racing, BiS and hanging out on discord than actually doing the boring parts of playing EQ, but its actually true for many of us.
There's a lot of people who just relish leveling different classes, races, combinations of both, etc. All the stuff you mention is secondary to actually enjoying Everquest. At the end of the day it sounds like you realized you didn't actually like playing Everquest that much after the novelty wore off and you had your epic level 60. Now you are here trying to figure out why anyone does this but you're looking at it the wrong way because you don't have that concept of actually liking this old game, warts and all, for what it is.

Because I like classic EQ, don't care about raiding or other stuff. I play a small bit just to level an alt or something. If I do load up a game these days it will probably be Kenshi.
I like Windows games when they were still interesting but I am not a gamer.

That's a good point. I have a group of friends I played with in high school start playing on p99 back when I was in the raid scene and the kind of stuff they would do in game would blow my mind (wait for the boat vs. port, level in some weird off the wall zones, make really dumb gear and build choices etc). It was kind of like watching that Michael's Shennanigans YouTuber who would just do goofy stuff instead of raid.
I know I enjoyed playing the game for a long time and have never loved another class like I did my bard, but once I saw behind the curtain on how the mechanics of the game work, doing that random stuff just wasn't as appealing to me.

I enjoy suffering. All the best things in life come with some blood, sweat and tears. Effort leads to reward. Of course, my brain is broken and forgot about the reward part of the equation.
I think that was my biggest argument for why gear in p99 felt so much more rewarding and I could probably tell you more gear pieces on my bard than on some of my WoW toons.
But when I think about how p99 raid mobs are and the mechanics of it, it just doesn't make sense. Take Vulak for example, spawns once a week so 52 opportunities a year. Lets say your top in guild gets 40 of those 52 Vulaks. Of those 40, you're able to attend 15-20. Of that 15-20, the item you want to drop maybe drops 5 times.
I just can't commit to that level of raiding for a chance I'll get a piece of loot. Not to mention that content isn't really fun to me anymore :(

For me it’s just the game itself. I think the mechanics are unique, almost one of a kind. The raiding isn’t my favorite part of the game it’s the journey to 60 and the folks you meet along the way. I don’t think I’ll ever stop playing Everquest. I tend to take long breaks in between, don’t get me wrong. Especially when I find new games that interest me like red dead redemption 2, but I always come back after my hiatus. Hopefully p99 lasts until I’m dead because I feel like I’ll always be back eventually.

Haha Skarne you and I think a lot alike! I LOVED the midi music and would listen to a play list of it at work sometimes haha.
The game definitely has some staying power, it's been 10+ years of p99 and 20+ of EQ. Crazy to think about right?

First is my favorite screen shot of my bard I've ever taken. Ironically on a wipe on a ring war but it was beautiful haha. I accomplished much with this bard and helped my guild become a competitor in the raid scene and made plenty of good friends and memories along the way.

Second is my first time seeing Ragnaros. I never played WoW back in the day so classic WoW felt like the expansion to classic everquest we should have got. We started this guild with some others from p99 and have added to it since launch.
With TBC launching I don't think I'll be back here much anymore. If anyone wants to come say hi, I'll be in <Corpse Run> on Herod slinging chain heals on my shaman. Be well everyone!
Yes you can have my p99 stuff, PM me if you really want it :D

I've been a bit inactive, but p99 seems to be pretty much the only MMO i'll find myself involved in. For a couple reasons.
1. Raiding is still fun. Some aspects of raiding is not fun. My attention span is about the lowest 1% in the world. So I mostly don't do that stuff. It's still a rush to execute a Vulak kill, such as the 12pm on a weekday kill with 50 less people than the opposing force. It's just not something you can experience in classic WoW. Raiding in WoW is extremely straight forward. You know exactly what time of the week the raid is going to happen. You know what you're going to do on the raid. You have a general idea of whether or not your guild is going to succeed on the kills or not. You spam your buttons. You wipe. You try again. Repeat
2. Norrath itself. I'll concede it's probably nostalgia, but the aesthetic is unparalleled in my book.
3. And most important, is gear. That thunderfury you grinded your ass off for? About to be useless next week. All those hours, for it to be moved to your bank to look at once every two months as a trophy. Meanwhile, my monk has had an Abashi for 3 years. As long as this project exists, I get to operate my bad ass toons. Those hours I put in are not going to be made obsolete by an upcoming expansion. That's been my biggest gripe with mmo's all these years. I've made it to the raid scene in a few different expansions on WoW, and i've always found myself wondering what the fuck the point was around the time my toon got pretty geared, but not VERY geared. Why keep grinding for best in slot gear when it's going to be worthless in a couple months?
4. Twinks, and gear overall. MMO's and ARPG's for that matter really started to lose me when gear became bind on equip, and level capped. Leveling my Fungi, full SS gear and clickable (before they nerfed that) druid from level 5 is probably... by a large margin.. the most fun i've EVER had leveling a toon. Leveling druids otherwise would be a snooze fest for me. Quadding? Boring. Doing quests in WoW? Boring. Saving up plat and giving my level 5 druid full raid gear, drones of doom click at level 5, regrowth of the grove self cast at level 5 + Fungi? Amazing. I was charming crocs in guk as extra DPS while just tanking 4-5 mobs at a time. So much fun. Making a twink on WoW is getting to a certain level and being able to buy whatever is best in the auction house. Twinking in EverQuest is a whole different level of rewarding. Having a KT axe on a level 1 gnome warrior is just.. fun. It's hilarious. Your group mates wondering why a gnome warrior with what looks like an axe of the iron back is putting out double the DPS of the rogue in group before you link. White dragon teeth before the nerf... etc etc there's just so many fun options to be able to twink your characters here. And, not only that, there's all the time in the world to farm the items for them, as there isn't an expansion looming that will make your new project obsolete.
5. Community. You can make friends in WoW, but the community in EQ has been different in a better way since 1999. I've done so many end game pick up raids in WoW where... nobody even talks to each other. Not one message in raid chat. Everyone just reacts to the instructions whatever raid addon they have installed... and basically behaves like an AI. Not stimulating enough for me.

Out of every game its the only one that feels like a standard fantasy universe.
Everyone else tries to fill the universe with their own brand.
But EQ is like, fantasy by the book.

-Enjoyable playing a game that's mostly adults.
-Being locked at Velious, I get to play a game that i don't have to rush through.. I dont need to raid content like an addict in prep for a new expansion.
-SO MUCH TO SEE AND DOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

These are not good points.
So from your first paragraph I gather the "grind" is what makes it special to you? I hope that is the case because I strongly agree.
However, your comment is laced with ill will for people like me, "into strats, practice, racing, BiS" this is just as much as Everquest as "grinding" is to Everquest.
In what other mmo do you grind on your ass for hours *waiting* for a raid mob to spawn for a *chance* at killing that raid mob for a *chance* of it dropping a piece of loot you want.
Reconsider how you think about things

I also left for WoW classic when it came out. The content was just too easy and the only reason to get better gear was to flex on my guild mates. We rolled through all of the content even as a semi casual guild. It all felt like an MMO with training wheels. The PvE in WoW live is far more difficult at the mythic raiding level than classic can offer.
So that why I left WoW, but why p99? The PvE is challenging because mistakes are costly and the real challenge is the guild you’re lining up against. Mob scarcity means item scarcity which means loot holds its value. The mechanics in this game are actually pretty complex compared to any other MMO I have played. Sure, there are many classes that can just spam one or two buttons to do their job, but under the hood there is a ton to learn.

I would argue the content in p99 is just as easy if not more so since almost all fights are tank and spank. You definitely have a point on the death consequences being higher in p99 than in WoW and I think overall I agree with the point you're making.
I hope the end game is competitive again, it's really a fun part of the game and what used to set project 1999 apart from TAKP or w/e other EQ emulators are out there. When I left the content required an excessive amount of raiders which killed all the small guilds unfortunately.

Were you around at the very beginning when certain nonclassic race/class combinations were available? Before quakes happened? When character faces could be changed while in game? Anyway, genuinely curious what people are enjoying here still. Hope all is well :)
I enjoy testing myself against the environment, as no other game since or ever will provide the terror of trying to click your wc cap to escape a 2 hour 500p CR.
I also like helping people. In most other games people don't want to be helped. They want to take.

For me, it's still the best version of a genre that I will probably always keep in my rotation of games to play.
I still find that you do get quite attached to EQ characters more than other video games. The only thing that comes close to this for me now is my farmer on Stardew Valley. Big Bill MacDuffy is really growing on me.

My tine is limited, so I really only do Sky Tuesdays, where I get to hang out with some old friends :)
Good to see you old friend! Vowels actually messaged me in discord yesterday from a Sky raid although I think hers was on Green haha.
A lot of good points brought up here about the good reasons to play here so thank you for that. I know this is RNF, but I think its nice to see the positive reasons people still play, even if I disagree with some of them.
P99 will always hold a special place for me in video games, but the main thing I personally enjoyed about this was the community and social space. Classic WoW fills that void for me now since many of my friends from here either stopped playing after the dragons got rooted or moved on to classic WoW. I'll keep my eyes on the horizon for any of you still playing p99 and enjoy chatting with you in discord (Littul#0010) or in classic wow :)

actually, I still play because I want a robe of the azure sky
which is probably never going to happen but if I keep my mind to it, it will happen!
Tbh this is the best reason. Doing something challenging with the game and community supporting that challenge and making it interesting. Classic stuff like this is definitely something you'll remember fondly. You'll remember the attempt. You'll remember the success. And some of the people you fought or helped on the way. :)
Sure running through VP with a merc is possible but it is hollow compared to doing it with a guild when there really is no other way.

It is rare to find a game today where the world is the server and everything on it is unique to those who are in the pool of that server, no one NPC is replicated like with instancing where it removes a kinda of principle immersion that everyone inherently is involved in while playing.
So for instance, a Instance of a zone, creates duplicates of a NPC. Seemingly meaningless, but really if there is only one of a name, sure he can "respawn.." but that timer of his re-spawn is part of the lifespan of that NPC.
It would be nice if devs took this a step further and named every decaying skeletons etc uniquely so each spawn is its own life and death cycle. I think this is something they were kinda hinting at with EQ Next but obviously it seems not enough people give a shit as most gamers today have no idea what roleplay means. Most play MMORPG games yet have never thought of immersion in their lives as gamers.
Even a single player game you can get immersed, even though your version of that game is completely unique or instanced in a sense, but you are playing through that world in a single player.
In a multi-player game I never understood Instancing.. It has always boggled my mind to the point I can't feel immersed anymore, this is where I personally think EQ went wrong, and where WoW went wrong too. The idea that Butcherblock has a copy version of itself is exactly why I didn't play Guild Wars 1, to me back then I was making fun of it for being a Lobby style of MMORPG rather than a MMORPG.
But MMORPGs since have completely forgotten this principle in favor of satisfying everyone by creating 1000s of copies of the same boss that people just privately camp.. Really killed anything I felt that MMORPGs had that was unique.

Dunno why my shit keeps spacing itself. This is why I play today anyways, Even though the game isn't really all that good anymore in comparison to newer games, this first core principles are all that really matter. The philosophy of players being forced to play together, rather than catering to people who just want to play solo.. Most MMORPG games cater to that latter type.

Out of every game its the only one that feels like a standard fantasy universe.
Everyone else tries to fill the universe with their own brand.
But EQ is like, fantasy by the book.
AND still its own brand.
Magic baby!
