The time I got GM gear

I played a halfling rogue on Rathe. I was known by half the server for being the biggest noob rogue. I played every day and spent the majority of my time lfg, no one wants to group with a rogue who doesn’t understand why it’s important to assist and not pull. Server Stack Dev plays on server and feels bad for me, asks me to join group and makes friends with me.

Teaches me everything, why “just kill everything, hit something: anything” isn’t a good strat and holds my hand through making all my macros like assist and evade and inc pull messages ect. months later out levels me and asks for my account info to hook me up with guide gear so I can solo to 60 and join his guild and he’ll teach me how to raid: at which point I have to delete the gear.

I fall in love with the gear, and with the empty velious zones like crystal caverns and tofs. Dev friend stops replying to my “sup player” messages when I log in so I stop messaging him.

I spend the next year at level 52(or is it 50, I can’t remember), sometimes I’d level up to 54 or 55 but I would sell to a necro back down to 52 a few days before the public vox and naggy raids. I get a half dozen Aa’s and the name baron, I never miss a public lvl 52 dragon raid.

Dev buddy sends me a message out of the blue “so when are you gonna hit 60 and delete that gear so I can teach you how to raid?” I tell him never, that I love being the only person in old dungeons and killing naggy/vox.

A month or so later I’m summoned from mistmoore castle to a doorless room in the Freeport aqueducts. I tell the gm everything but my friends name, so they ban me for sharing account info.

guide gear was statless, the weapons had shit ratios too. the only useful effects were the clickies.

a non-guide flagged PC equipping any guide gear would fall over dead immediately, and it would page a server GM to investigate

You guys can be jealous that I had the most radical and unique eq classic experience, you can say you know how servers work and blah blah blah. No matter what you say, what happened actually happened. I had guide gear for around two years with a non guide flagged pc, I don’t know how I got away with it for so long nor do I understand any of the supposed server flagging. I’m telling you right now, I had a blast doing my own thing. I for sure forgot to take off the back piece a few times going to ec/baz and for sure got petitioned many times before I got banned. It’s all unreal to me as well, but I double dog scouts honor pinky swear.

I could bind myself and make a corpse and ch myself by gm Rez zing my corpse from two different pair of gloves: sometimes I used the chain ones other times I used the plate. I could single pull with mem blur. I had crazy regen from an earring that does have stats. I had a back slot that was 100 sv all. It was awesome and it’s not like I would farm expensive loot and sell it or be abusive with it like mem bluring other groups mobs or anything. I legitimately just experienced old barren content solo and it was amazing.

Thank you starkind. Legitimately trying to share my classic experience and ended up turning into a braggart because I got called a liar. Truthfully I expected questions about details before being called a liar and ended up sharing a very personal pic of mine from when I was afforded the opportunity to meet my one of my top 5 people I’m a fan of.

I had no idea he was going to be there, I was starstruck to say the least. I remember driving to Cali and thinking (that would be crazy if Brad showed up, no way he’s too busy).

Let me be honest: Brad McQuaid wasn’t just my top 5. He was my idol. EQ had such a profound positive effect on my childhood: it kept me out of trouble when I was getting into a lot of it. The lore itself is virtuous in its core: almost every epic quest has some deeper life
lesson ect ect. There’s a lot of resentment in it also, super appealing to a first world suburban anarchist filled with teen angst.

After meeting Brad I felt so good, I’ve programmed a few stupid little hybrid clone games myself and was daydreaming about how this was my foot in the game dev industry. He passed away a few days later and I was crushed. I know Pantheon will carry on and still be a great game: All those dudes for sure had faith and confidence in what they were doing and doing it great. Now if anything, from my experience when a leading team member is lost, the dev team has permanently cemented their conviction to the project.

Then...

This usually leads to temporary drama. Then the culprit GM gets banned and crashes down in flames and we make fun of them for years.

Cool man. I played on Bertoxx back in the day and I fondly remember helping a GM complete a part of a quest and he gave me "Can O' Whoop ass" I was young and thought it was seriously the coolest thing ever lol.

I think GM's had to complete quests to involve themselves with the players. Good times. Something ill def never forget.

A few weeks after EQ came out, I was in Blackburrow on a Barbarian Shaman (Bristlebane) and it was pitch black. I fell into the hole in the middle and plummeted to my death. After a few hours and many deaths later, while trying to recover my corpse at 2 in the morning, I decided to petition a GM explaining my problem and that I didn't want to log out without looting my equipment because my father was one of those "computers and video games are evil" types and it could be a long time before I got the chance to play again.

A few minutes later and a GM summons me to Blackburrow, on the Qeynos side. He says he will have my corpse over in a jiffy. He looked amazing with sparkling weapons and the coolest looking armor I'd ever seen. After summoning my corpse, he provided me with a 100% rez and we sat there and chatted for a little bit. Blackburrow was empty because it was the middle of the night so I figured I'd ask him questions about being a GM and what his armor did etc.

I'm not sure how it happened, maybe trying to type in the dark as a kid but I /d him by mistake. At the time, I didn't even know you could duel other players. We start talking about PvP and he tells me I can hit him a few times. I take out my cracked staff and go to town, barely making a dent. Within a split second, he goes from full health to a sliver of health, and my next swing, he falls over dead. I literally shit my pants. How? Why? Not a clue. All I thought was I was about to deal with repercussions, not understanding with my child mind at the time, that he had intentionally, somehow, lowered his own health so I could kill him.

After sitting there for a few minutes, without him returning nor receiving any messages from him, I attempted to loot his corpse. To my complete disbelief, I was able to loot his body like an NPC. A loud CHING, I look down, rubbing my eyes, I looted nearly 10,000 platinum from his corpse. Prior to this, by level 9 and weeks of playing, I had earned maybe a couple dozen platinum. I was amazed at how much platinum I looted from him but at the same time, I'd imagined higher level monsters probably dropped a lot more than the gnolls and skeletons I had been killing up to this point. It didn't hit me later just how much money he had given me. When he finally returned, I mentioned looting his coin, to which he said I could keep. As a parting gift, he also gave me a title "The Blind". I made it to level 34 before my dad had decided that Everquest was Satan incarnate and I lost the ability to play for good but this is something I could never forget and was such an awesome memory looking back on.

i believe gms giving players clickies is pretty classic plz allow guides and gms to buff/heal/give items to newbies for the fun of it (especially after short little fun guide quests).

if ur worried about 'cheating'

make a list of cool items they can summon and give out to players they like

ppl should be rewarded for being cool and social and interacting and not just petitionquesting
