The bolt on the OG M14 used to fall out mid-combat, they later added a metal strip down the side to keep it from doing this. One of the main things I love about the M14 (other than the fact that it's super accurate at mid-to-long ranges for an automataic rifle)... it will fire no matter what. They installed a new chassis system on our M14s... which looked super cool (but made it twice as heavy)... problem is, the only person who could disassemble it was the armorer since it required a bench and special tools. So my M14 would go 6 months without maintenance and still fire true every time I squeezed the trigger. Meanwhile the AR-15 that I cleaned 3 x a day would be lucky to make it 10 rounds into a magazine before having a major malfunction.

I went to night school to get a diploma. My principal was actually a retired Military guy, and when he saw had hard I was working to get in, he kind of pulled some strings to get me a diploma even faster. This was right after 9/11 so people were a lot more gung-ho and patriotic and encouraging every young person to enlist. Which obviously didn't age well.

They actually got desperate enough to kind of take people with waivers during the stop loss era (basically the backdoor draft). We actually had a guy in our platoon who had committed multiple felonies and had no diploma or GED who still got in through a bunch of waivers. The funny part is, the crime he committed (drive-by shooting people's vehicles with paintball guns as a teenager) was locally famous enough that other guys in our platoon who were from the same state had actually heard of his "crimes" lol. Ironically he ended up being one of our best soldiers, leading us to believe that the Military should start recruiting more criminals. Short lived though. Road side bomb hit our truck. Didn't think anyone was hurt real bad, but this guy started randomly passing out and having ceisures. Turns out he had a massive brain injury from the explosion. They sent him home early, and I never really saw him again.

At the time I wasn't necessarily poor, but I definitely wasn't rich. For me it was hard to wrap my head around the idea of buying Cataclysm and and a subscription and leveling a toon just to probably get perma banned from the forums again. I didn't know they were having sniper try-outs, and honestly, I didn't really have that much confidence in myself. I never would have volunteered, but they came to our first sergeant and told him to send their best dudes, and my name was the first one that came up because I was actively training for SFAS. I actually went over and competed against guys who had been training for this event (which lasted roughly a week). The main advantage I had was being an E-4 who had already been deployed, and just had a lot more experience over the guys I was competing against. They were all cherries fresh out of basic training, and from the Company who had openings for Snipers (yes, there was an Infantry company in a Cav unit).

After the try outs were over, I actually didn't think I made it, and when they told me I did, I told them I wasn't really that interested and I wasn't lying. They didn't care and moved me anyways. The company that they sent me to didn't have a single combat veteran in it, I wasn't a fan of having E-1s stand at parade rest for me because I was a specialist, or having a bunch of angry NCOs screaming at everyone like we're still in basic training 24/7.

Back in my old troop I was with guys I partied with every weekend and I was really content with where I was at. The unit was mostly veterans, and everyone got treated like adults and more like a family, so getting sent to that Infantry unit sucked. There was some perks though, a lot of times they would let me do PT on my own, and they sent me to the combatives school that was off-post, and I got to where civilian clothes and didn't have to shave for several months, and I remember all the guys thought I had it made when I would stroll passed them in civilian clothes with a 5 o clock shadow while they were busy doing regular dumb army stuff, lmao.

What do you consider a small chapter? By my count, you'd have needed at least 3 enlistments (12+ years) at a minimum to do all the things you've claimed. No way they're putting you through the SF pipeline without having to reenlist at least once considering it is an ~18 month process, and then a change of service to the Navy would necessitate another reenlistment.

12 years is over 15% of the average male life span in the US.
