Q: How many scrolls did you turn in and how many do you have left?
A: 1,729 and 618, respectively



Q: If you turned them all in what level would you get?
A: 53



Q: Why did you do this?
A: I like seeing how things work and what is possible. I've set some records and done some fun stuff like being #1 DPS in Vanilla era on Green (https://streamable.com/ftle4), getting the first Priest of Discord solo kill on Green (https://www.project1999.com/forums/showthread.php?t=365018), and inventing the Manadance™ (https://www.project1999.com/forums/showthread.php?t=359987). I wanted to do the fastest 1-60. Due to change in scroll exp and the amount of exp needed at 53+ being shown to be incorrect (https://www.project1999.com/forums/showthread.php?t=371701), that wasn't possible with the quest exp items I gathered. Business has been busy so I decided to go for 1-50. I did it to set a speed record. Not to be the most efficient, get a yellow text or whatever. If you understand that, the run makes sense.



Q: What about your skills?
A: Most spell casting skills are maxed now. Melee skills are over 100. It doesn't take as long as people think, and a shaman with high ac, fungus tunic, regen, and slow can easily facetank Ice Giants at 50 with 0 defense to get your defense up.



Q: Are you the reason gnoll scrolls got nerfed?
A: No. Saikkezz made a Everlore post on Augusut 10, 2000 (https://web.archive.org/web/20030228224515/http://everlore.com/quests/default.asp?mode=35&id=184420). Thank him for making P99 more classic. Developer Telin said this is why they made the change (https://www.project1999.com/forums/showpost.php?p=3226997&postcount=8).



Q: How long did it take you to buy/camp all those scrolls? Should you add this to your time?
A: Longer than it takes a drag racing car to fuel up before a race, but less time than it took Usain Bolt to train to run his world record 100M dash. No.



Q: What about people that can do 1-50 in a day or two? That's not much slower.
A: As a fast but nowhere close to Olympic material sprinter, I ran an 11.7s 100m in high school. Usain Bolt's world is only 18% faster than mine. Let that soak in. The gap from one level to the next is exponential 10s and 9.58s is a world away. 11s and 9.58s is a universe away.



Q: Do you think your record will be broken?
A: It's possible, but unlikely. My strategy and our execution could both be improved on for sure, but only minimally. I would be happy for someone to do it and stretch our minds even more on what's possible.



Q: How did you keep track of everything?
A: Google sheets with multiple tabs. With almost 700 mules, I needed to know the name, location, and scroll inventory of every mule. I needed to calculate exp based on race/class modifiers and the base exp table. This would be an entirely new thread if I exhaustively shared this information.



Q: Did you learn anything or have any insights to share?
A: I learned some excel/google sheets tricks. I became better at logistics. I certainly grew in my patience and perseverance. It was an incredible, but challenging experience. I'd put it up there with my training for and competing in a 100km trail race and reading a nearly, 2,000 page book for a certification. My insight is that any goal is achievable if you break it down and press on with resolve. I also learned a few EQ tricks. One I call the "corpse centipede." I'll have to share that in another thread some day.

A: Stretch your mind. Stretch your will. Set crazy goals and go after them. Read the Slight Edge by Jeff Olson. Read Scroll #3 from the book The Greatest Salesman in the World.

I think it's impressive, and you don't have to be grinding scrolls 24/7 to do this, this is a good way to make an alt purchasing scrolls or farming them during downtimes, work, household chores, I think it's a legitimate approach to leveling, especially when ya plan for it, I could see leveling a druid, then storing scrolls, and using them to help an alt get a great head start.

Imagine red2.0, level a druid to 50, you may have 100 scrolls, what's that a free lvl 20+ alt?

I appreciate my call out in the name of the 367 scroll sellers... the biggest problem I see in all of this, is that it took a team of people porting/buffing you immediately as you log in, logging into mules to give you scrolls, and whatever else they did (no one is actually watching the 3hr long video to who they were/what they all did, only bits and pieces) and yet, none of their names are mentioned in the post. Id love to see a competitive speedrun community for our server. Though personally, I'd prefer a non-quest xp category and a no-buff no twink category.
How fast can you get to 50 only soloing using only gear you made or looted yourself. You can do turn ins, but has to be earned by your character.

Castle on your next speed run select the class / race combo you think is most suitable to soloing to level 60 and do it without assistance in the quickest amount of play time with no actual prep work except knowing how to play the game.

Then post the grind unedited. It won't be server first to 50 or 60 but it will be solo speed run for a non bard

I do have to agree that it’s pretty interesting that Castle won’t explain why his Alts got sowed and ran into the water and drowned. If you’re not botting, how does that occur?

Idk if I would go as far as banning unless he was proved to be boxing or botting. I find it more sad than anything else really. Maybe I just don’t understand how someone can make this game so integral to their life’s happiness 20 years later, so to each their own I suppose (but IMO if the thought of doing this had crossed my mind I think I might have realized that’s when it’s time to stop playing).

Thanks for posting. Interesting idea. I always enjoy seeing weird/unconventional personal goals and how they play out. I'm not active enough in community to have a say on if this would be considered legit, but it definitely feels unique as an achievement to me. Lots of prep, one big payoff, no last repercussions. Pretty much every game fastest to X level ends up being some form of mechanic shenanigans. And all the ppl throwin a fit about fastest to X not being max level... I mean... thats a common thing. People perfecting 1-10, 1-20, etc. If P99 was trying to keep official records, I imagine those would all be different runs you could attempt to break. Speedruns are all about minute differences to each category.

Anyway, I enjoyed the 20 pages of responses. Some good points on how valid this would be, but at the end of the day it was a personal goal and no one has tried to outdo it yet.

Next will be bone chips to 5? CB Belts/Shoulders to 20? Similar vein and probably a ton cheaper to do heh
