Hey all,

Just wanted to share with everyone what happened to my wife and I tonight. My wife (53 Cleric) was PL'ing me (30 Ranger) in Warsliks Woods. I can see how this might look like boxing as my wife likes to play a tablet (Candycrush god help us!) and reach over and heal and occasionally buff while I pull mobs. So I'm sure the appearances are what got us summoned to Estate to run the infamous fountain figure-eight test which we have run twice before (several months ago), with two different GMs, and passed. This time my wife was super nervous and we didn't get off to a good start. Plus because I state this would be our third time running this test, GM Menden did not provide us instructions. The previous time was several months ago, so we weren't completely clear on the directions he wanted us to run. Anyway, long story short, after running a not so perfect test, but definitely ran what IMO would be impossible for one person to do, my wife who, as I said was super nervous fell in the fountains and was having trouble getting out, so I stopped my pattern and went over to her keyboard to help her out. Within seconds we were banned no chance to explain nothing. I share all of this not to plead my case to any Project 1999 staff but to convey that this can happen to any of you couples who play out there and I'm sure it has happened. No recourse, no questioning, no further testing (the last two times we were given 2 and 3 different tests) which we passed. Menden made a unilateral decision based on a totally incorrect opinion and because of that the days of devotion to our characters (Silbo 51 Druid, Martenii 50 Chanter, Khardan 30 Ranger, and Uilani 53 Cleric) will be gone forever. The realization is quite earth shattering actually - Totally gone. So for you couples out there beware and make sure to head to Estate every so often to practice running figure eights around the fountains so when you get tagged you don't freak out like my wife did. Peace be with you all and check out Pantheon.

I made the mistake of posting this to RNF last night. Boy that was fun reading lol.

You know you admitted to 2 boxing by saying you went over to her comp to get her out of the pond.

My brother and I have played here since 2009 and we have not once been box tested. If you were checked 3 times, you were boxing.

Didn't read. Pras staff for keeping the server box free.

God bless p99 and legit players.

Op sorry you got caught. Lesson learned?

Seen too many "wife & husband" boxing teams. "Oh my wife is just logging in to rezz me", yeah sure mate, sure she is.

Best was someone's "grandmother" playing a cleric outside the group to heal the mana-stoning wizard.

Pras staff for getting this scum outta here! Also if you're going to cheat, atleast put your characters on different accounts.

This is a great troll. You got busted boxing, time to reroll and level like the rest of us. One at a time!

1) -if you passed twice before you wouldn’t fail a 3rd time if you had two people controlling
2) -if you’ve done this twice before why would you be nervous about running simple route in unrest.
3) -someone who has multiple toons and one above level 50 can get out of the baby pools in unrest lol.

Nice try though. If you really do have a wife and you just got both your toons nuked - I feel bad I bet she is PISSED.

Hey Silbo, I grouped with you in Paw back in April (your name sounded familiar, I checked my logs). I enjoyed grouping with you and you seemed like a nice person. You even accidentally ported our group out mid-battle when your wife came home from work and you got distracted talking to her. :P Sorry this happened to you and sorry you're getting beat up on the forums. I'm inclined to believe your story just based on having played with you, but I suppose that makes me biased and I didn't see what the GMs saw - a 50+ getting stuck in a fountain does unfortunately sound suspicious. :\ Good luck if you start again.

tbh I can see a wife who isnt really even into EQ from the start, who played a cleric which is basically a sit and stand class, not being able to figure 8 properly. My wife plays WoW with me and she isn't the best mobile toon and that's after years of playing.

If this was a legit mishap for you guys, I really do feel for you.

Yeah my wife misses tells and group chat constantly, gets lost easily even when following me across a zone, runs north instead of south (in DL this time) and gets killed while 2 of us are in discord trying to find her. "I am on the north wall and all i see are trees" She was on the south wall. grrr

If we get tested we're probably gonna fail too. I'd be better off inviting the GM to discord to hear us arguing trying to get to a hunting area.

My four children aged 6 to 11 years of age all love nothing more on earth than to help me farm, powerlevel guild shared clerics, and sell at the tunnel multiple hours a day. Please do not take this away from innocent children because they are poor typists with no capacity to follow complex instructions. Thank you.

Easy solution here is to have both of you in discord at the same time with GM and do screen shares. while you both are playing/communicating to the GM.

OP forgot to mention his wife is quadraplegic from serving in the middle east and has other trauma forcing her to only be able to play P99.

Not for nothing but my daughter always watched me play. At 8 she made her own character and played with me for a while before she started to play roblox/sims with her friends. After I set up hot keys, she was pretty damn good. No one ever called her out or even knew it was a 8 year old girl playing.

If you cant run a figure 8 as an adult in EQ, how the hell did you even make it the 50s?

I wish GM Menden would have given us a discord opportunity or even another test. He made a knee jerk decision that was based on totally wrong conclusion. I've pretty much given up on 1999. No way we are starting over. Plus Menden and that whole experience probably sealed the deal for my wife ever playing MMOs again. I will be looking forward to Pantheon in the meantime, it looks very promising :). Thanks to those who provided support in their posts and peace be with those that were trolls/haters :). I know what happened. My wife was physically there. She isn't all that great when in come to running around and she knew the stakes so was shaking she was so nervous. 13 months of char gone like that -- so to those couples that play, head to Estate and practice every once in a while is my advice. I so wish we had...

Your behavior was suspicious enough that you were tested 3 different times, but yes, blame the GMs. I believe you play along with your wife. I think on a few occasions you may have taken improper advantage of your IP exemption.

but some people take advantage of it and use it to box

I'm pretty sure he had to have the IP exemption already otherwise they wouldnt be able to log-in together in the first place.

The exemption doesn't exclude you from boxing policies, you still have to have both people on each comp.

You guys should roll on that Al'Kabor project. They allow boxing up to 3 accounts per person. If you or your wife want to play a couple do toons at a time you can. Not to mention IMO it's the second best EQ box next to P99. They have a classy raid scene and the server will stop at PoP. Might be with checking out.

GM's need a Wargames style big screen Command Centre with all IP exemption players highlighted at all times on a giant map of Norrath.

I played this game a couple years ago and applied for an IP exception for my wife to play but never received a response. I wasn't sure how strictly this rule was applied and I'm glad we didn't just decide to chance it and play regardless. If you had an exception, I'm not sure how excited I'd be to tell the Mrs that she may be occasionally tested if we got one.

I'm back playing again and really enjoying it and the wife looking over my shoulder is starting to get that Norrathain gleam in her eye so this thread caught my attention.

Is it a lot of trouble to play with someone else on your own LAN in P1999 or his our OP a fairly unique situation? I'm enjoying my time and not going anywhere but if my wife wanted to roll her enchantress again I'd like to set some expectations for her.

They are pretty strict, but lots of people have IP exceptions with their spouse and aren't suspected of boxing.

As a rule of thumb, I'd just always think of the "Butt's in the Computer Seats" rule. If she's AFK using the restroom, don't reach over and hit her keyboard to land a heal/nuke.

You'll be tempted to log into your wife's character to do simple things like an EC transfer, or running her to your group to throw a few buffs - but those things are still considered boxing and people get caught for those little infractions all the time. They'll nuke your accounts in those cases and tell you you are welcome to reroll with new accounts. Some couples do, some don't.

I wouldn't worry too much about OP's post. It feels Sus to me. If you are concerned though, you can both have Discord up and be ready to both pop into one of the P1999 server voice channels instantly. But if she's playing an enchanter likely she's going to be moving constantly. Two players that move constantly don't get pulled in to be tested.

Good luck and happy gaming =)

Yeah in many ways its harder than live because there you could box but you had to be paying for or accessing 2 paid accounts. Here accounts are free, and boxxing is not allowed.

Not sure what to say.

I've not used Discord much but if we do play together in the future I will make sure we are both set up to do that if necessary. It's good information to know and I fully understand the desire to eliminate boxing. On Live having your camp overran by 5 toons autofollowing a player and they start mowing thru your camp was very annoying.

If shes constantly playing her character actively and isn't just perma afk except to buff you every 20-30 minutes the GM's will leave you alone. It is always painfully obvious when someone is clearly boxing but using the "my brother, wife, sister, kid" is playing excuse. The hardest part of legit playing with multiple people in one house is waiting for them to grant the IP exemption.

In that case, it will be you who is the suspicious one :P.

Look, if you and your partner are actually able to play the game to any degree of skill, then you should be fine. It just looks REALLY suspicious when someone's "wife who has been playing for years and has a level 50-something character" can't figure out how to swim up (hint: don't play in 3rd person).

Even giving the benefit of doubt to people in the same situation as the OP, if your partner doesn't actually play the game very much, perhaps just hitting a couple spells on a laptop while they watch netflix, and you have to dictate every command to them, you would likely fail the bot test even if they were legitimately there.
