Have any of the devs considered contacting Daybreak for the code to place the Aradune memorial in the Karanas? I don't see why they would be opposed to the idea.

Aradune was Brad Mcquads character in Everquest. A Paladin.

Aradune was Brad Mcquads character in Everquest. A Paladin.

he started as a Paladin but ended as a Ranger. I cant find the thread that was spelling it out. Basically he said the Ranger evolved into the class he thought the Paladin would become. He had a custom fire sword though that still carried over and is often the main reason people still called him a Paladin.

The second you have an in game memorial you’ll have tasteless corpses literally covering it.

I know Brad probably had drug and addiction issues, not discounting that.
He also created Everquest at a time when he was younger then I am know. So I gotta give him mega kudos for being capable of such a feat.

Usually the best ones have a terrible vice like drugs or sex addiction. I'm not trying to defend him if that was the case. Odds are? yeah he probably died due to drug OD from his oxy fixation.

you cannot discount the fact that the man was brilliant though, and we all owe him a great deal for creating such a safe place for us to exist in digital form. Everquest is insanely ahead of it's time and vanguard to a lesser extent. Guy was incredibly intelligent and probably fell into some dark habits.

doesnt change the fact he helped create something we're still enjoying today. much love and respect to Aradune / Brad Mcquaid for giving to the world, Norrath. I've named every single one of my kids after my Everquest character because it was my family when I didn't have one.

Thank you Brad for giving me that. I'm sure i'm not the only one.

I have far less faith in the edgelords of P99.

I have far less faith in the edgelords of P99.

Live servers have edgelords too and it's not an issue there so I doubt that will be an issue on p99.

It's a an easy add. Daybreak/Darkpaw gives the p99 devs the graphic and it gets added in some future patch.

Some people don't even know who Aradune/Brad McQuaid was, so p99 alone is not a complete memorial.

The only reason I brought it up was because I was playing with a friend in the Karanas and I thought 'it would be nice to go pay my respects to Aradune. He was the first GM I interacted with on EQ back in 1999 and he was really nice. Just seeing his green armor and flaming sword made the game more exciting. My friend agreed and suggested I post the idea here.

Like I mentioned when he first died, I think it would be cool if they did some custom content and brad/aradune is in the game himself. Why have a dead memorial of him when you can have a living memory. He can either be a super powerful god like being who players have to try to keep alive or there is no way they will beat super bad evil god army is some kind of server wide event, or he cold be a normal powered character for his level and be a simply escort (maybe even he escorts you instead of the usual you escort NPC)

I don't think we should have t on green since it's a fossil and should remain as such, but on blue for custom content I wouldn't do a copy and paste of darkpaw did.

isn't there a pub in halas called McQuaids? it's like he bought a pub after retiring!

Personally instead of a big giant flaming sword memorial, I think a much better custom content way to include Brad would be to make Aradune OR some similar analog, in a relevant place (eg. an NPC named Daraune or Rabd in McQuaid's in Halas ... classic EQ was all about word play names!)

That NPC shouldn't just be some stationary reminder: he should have (at least one) quest. It'd be extra fun if he was a rare spawn, or had interesting pathing, or had an interesting spawn trigger, or whatever, or if the quest was actually worth doing (even if only to level 3s on Green). But the really important bit, to me, is that he should be an "active part" (as active as NPCs get) of the world.

If you look at Classic EQ as "Brad's Vision", static memorials were never in that vision. NPCs with quests (even pointless ones) and wordplay names absolutely were.

P.S. But I also still like the idea of adding him to "dev island" in Plane of Sky. And I like the idea of bringing "dev island" back in the first place (I heard they removed it?)

They have his character model already worked out. I think it would be appropriate to place him somewhere in game, from time to time, either as part of a memorial custom quest or just to be visible for a few days each year around the b-day of EQ.

EQ does have a tradition of placing memorials to the RL guides/GMs that worked on EQ, but they were not in player areas.

Right, but I think my point still stands: in classic EQ (and specifically in-game, as is being proposed in this thread ... not in some secret GM area no one can see) we never had static memorials (like a statue of a flaming sword).

But we did have "memorials" to all sorts of things: McQuaid's as mentioned is one, but there's "memorials" to Game of Thrones in Qeynos (in the form of NPCs named Joffrey and Sansa), and tons of stuff like that also. Again, I think it'd be more "classic EQ" to make any Brad memorial a "living" part of the world ... not a dead/static one.

I'm not so sure about that. I'm almost positive that there are hidden memorials in game that the original devs put there without telling people...inside jokes, etc.

Many of the NPC names were homage easter eggs (or even just inside knowledge) to other RPGs or their own characters in other RPGs...one or two of them probably posthumously.

I would literally be insulted if all they did was that poop geometry from post velious expansions in the center of my eastern karanas as a memorial if I were him.

Went under.

On youtube I've been getting linked a lot of retrospectives on EQ, eq mysteries is over 120k views, seen some top 20 why EQ is the best game ever video's

I feel like there is this buzz in the air about a little classic eq resurgence but maybe I am just being hopeful. Maybe its brad's energy buzzing around idk but its awesome to see this game getting so much love so many years later, it really is a testament to how great it is.

Maybe I'm being a big softy, but Brad really did have quite an impact in our world, I hope he's happy back in Norrath whence he came.
