View Full Version : How can this game be any fun when the community is so sh*ty?

I tried this game back when green launched. It was then when I met this community and wasn't impressed. All you did was cry to gms about getting your camps taken from you like children.
I gave it a few months. Maybe I was wrong everyone deserves a second change, right?
Wrong!
I came back here hoping that I was wrong about the community. That all the posts on reddit about how toxic and clique-y it was was just disgruntled players.
I was wrong.
You people are just a bunch of spoiled brats. You won't help new players to save your lives. You either ignore people out right or you just tell them to fuck off. You all act like this and expect people to play here?
I understand why you all act like this. Most of you were probably locked in a room with your new shiney computer that mommy and daddy bought you along with a sub to this game and you were handed every fucking thing. You are probably mostly only children who never had to share a goddamn thing. They way you people act is truly pathetic. I know your real life sucks so you have to come on a 20 year old video game just to validate your lives.
Some people just want to have fun and play a game. You people sit there and talk about the social "experiences" this game is supposed to be about yet, every experience I have had is a goddamn shit show.
This game would be so much better if you people knew how to act like decent human beings. This server would have a fuck ton of new players too. But, no, you greedy asses can't even stop what your doing to help new players because "I don't have to. Twenty years ago mommy and daddy said it was mine and I don't have share! Hmh!"
Keep your fucking game and your fucking community. I hope this shit gets wiped in the worse possible way so I can see you all come back here crying about how you lost your precious characters. You'd probably spend your days crying to the gms like you cry to them about everything.

In before RnF.
Also, @OP - I think this game isn't for you. There's nothing wrong with a 20 year old game not being your niche.
Also, be the community you want to see.

Also, you tend to find what you're looking for. 95% or more of the individuals on p99 are just fine. Plenty of folks are helpful. If you don't understand this, it's because you don't want to understand this, not because it is untrue.

To me this post reads as if you intentionally waited to join the server and got immediately pissed that the people that did not wait aren't showering you with freebies and helping make your experience more enjoyable. That isn't their obligation, and you should try to be a part of this community rather than take advantage of it. Maybe then it wouldn't feel like everyone is telling you to 'fuck off'.

Some pretty broad strokes here....do you have anything specific to rant against, or is this just a “You people” flame?
You keep mentioning people not helping new players. What kind of help were you expecting? When I started on Green I had someone randomly hand me a few pieces of bronze and about 50 plat within 10 minutes or so of playing. A lot of people do stuff like this, in addition to buffing/porting noobs. I think you’re in the very far minority.
I have a great time,
I run around buff newbies, give em like 10 plat so they can buy bags. Uber sham buff em up, chat with them, let them loot Aku Bar boxes. U must demand so much shit, people tell you to fuck off. You are not entitled

There's alot of assholes on p99 but there's many more friendly people. I'd say the ratio is about 10:1 friendly to asshole. Maybe 7:1 at max level. But still the assholes are the minority.

Because of the community, by the time I was level 3, I had a Box of Abu-Kar, Crude Stein, fine steel weapon of each type 1hs, 1hb, 2hs, 2hb, piercing, and over 100pp just running to sell stuff for high level players. I frequently get buffs without asking. Not sure what experience the OP has had, but mine is the opposite.

OP, I'm sorry you feel that way. I have had good interactions with folks.
I've found if you don't expect anything from anyone, then if you do get offered soemthing, then good to go. Oh well if you don't.
I dont remember anyone being mean to me outside of 1 or 2 times in the past years or so. The funny thing is both instances were on seperate occasions from someone in the same guild so it may have been one specific awful person, because they were attacking everyone I ever saw interact with them and they hated dial a porters like me so id hear them complain constantly.
The most common thing I notice is people who ignore you keeping their head down if you try to talk to them. That's not toxicity, thats someone who's busy

Mmm, sems just your experience, i experienced so much help from people, people gifting buff to new players, and people gifting items, tips etc.., green is a little more competitive and blue is so much solo in low lvls, and forum are the land of "boredom and trolls" but majority of people are so much nice, include in forums you can find people creating content for help new players and being really originals and fun, and if some one no want help you, you just have to deal with it. And wait wile why probably in a few some one is going to help you.

LOL I didn't read the whole post but I got the gist of it... you met some meanies who wouldn't buff you so you come and say everyone on the server is a piece of shit.
I get along with 99% of the players here and that 1% are pretty much going out of their way to be a douche and get /ignored.
People generally don't like it when you walk into their camp and steal their exp and/or items... it doesn't make them a baby if they get the GM's on you ass because they cant beat your ass like they would if you tried that kind of shit in the real world.
And what a stroke of genius coming to some of the most toxic people from the server to try to get sympathy.

When I started on green I used patchwork armor I made and a rusty scimitar until about level 35. Never had a sow or port I didn't cast myself and never got a buff from a higher level to help me level.
I've seen plenty of low levels demand 1000 mana in buffs and get super pissy when they get ignored, are you one of them?

No I didnt break any rules. And there have been a few people helping me. One guy even gave me 60pp but I can't touch it anymore because I hate the dark elf starting area and I can't touch it now. And I'll admit I was a bit frustrated when I wrote that post and I am sorry for that.
I love this game. I love not having to follow gold exclamation marks around and killing or gathering x thing to give to random bob. I love how there isn't an implied rush to end game.
I am just so frustrated that I have a small fortune and I can't touch it because the dark elf starting area is the video game version of hell. Hardly any mobs, big ass golems just wanting to crush you into the ground for being in their sight. I have begged people to help me get it but, all I get is "Roll a dark elf" and its like "I fucking hate that race."
I tried rolling a gnome Necro but, that turned disastrous when I got too close to a guy that didnt like necros and got killed with all my money and loot too close to him. I begged for help and I was just ignored. One guy, another newb, even sacrificed himself to help me try to get it when no one else would.
I am sorry. I love this game but, there are times like these that make me want to just fully uninstall the game.

It doesn't sound like you "love this game". In fact, if getting lost in Nek forest or w/e you're on about is the cause of such frustration, you will absolutely not enjoy the game. The community is what you make of it. 95% of the people are mad chill land happy to help.

You can make level 1 alts that are not kos to drag your corpse for you in situations like Nek Forest. You can consent offline characters (even your own alts). Consent and then swap to your alt to drag it to safety

Okay so to clarify, when you say you can't touch it is that because you died in or around Neriak on the character that had the money and it's on your corpse? Or is it because you put it in the bank?
If you put it in the bank, your character's bank can be accessed from any other bank in the world. So you could go to the Freeport bank, for example, and your cash would be in the bank there as well (only on that character though of course...you don't share banks across different characters).
If the issue is that you died and can't get to your corpse because you're kill on sight in Neriak then you have a couple options. Someone can drag your corpse to a safer area of the zone (I could create a dark elf, or run there on my main character, and do this for you at some point if you want) so that you can loot it or you could create a dark elf yourself and I think you can type /consent [that character name] on the char whose corpse you need dragged, then go re-log into the dark elf char, and drag it that way.

You sound like you need to acquaint yourself with the newbie guides on the wiki, slow yourself down, be more patient, and join a leveling guild where you can ask questions. Cause boy, have you got a lot of things wrong.
You're making newbie mistakes (like apparently attacking golems as a dark elf, cause they won't normally attack you, or wandering close to "good" NPCs as an evil PC) and then going into a frothing-at-the-mouth frenzy on the forums when you didn't instantly get your hand held through the very beginning, simplest stages of the game.

I guess 60pp being a “small fortune” is all relative, but are you saying you can’t transfer it to another character? A lot of people could help you transfer some plat to a new character. Even Dial a Porters can help transferring gear to another character if you drop them a tip. Hell, I’ve got a character camped in EC, I could help transfer for you.
Sounds like you had quite a bit of help as a newb. Someone gave you 60pp (spell money to cover at least to mid-teens), someone else sacrificed themselves trying to get your corpse...what else are you trying to get??
You don’t have to level in Nek Forest. You can grab a port to Gfay, have someone bind you outside Kelethin guard range, and go fight in Crushbone. Or Blackburrow by Qeynos. And if you have questions about game mechanics that can’t be answered from the Wiki, ask away in the “Starting Zone” forum.
Still confused how such minor inconveniences would prompt such a visceral response, or make you want to uninstall.

Its very sad how many people will not get to enjoy this project because they play the blue server.
Red is so much better, you join a little group of players or a guild and you fight against the other guilds, people actually care about getting you geared up and you are always included in stuff thats happening because you need numbers to hold stuff down.
its a shame most of you dont have any fun on this project.

I didn't die and it's not on a corpse. I am not that stupid lol. It's in the bank but, I don't have a toon that's strong enough to go in there and get it. I'd like to give it to main druid/halfling main. The only way to do that is to trust another player with it which, no offense, I'm not exactly fond of doing. However, if someone could help me achieve this I'd be more than happy to pay them 10pp for their hassle and from what I have gathered doing this is a pretty big hassle
To those saying that I'm having a fit cause the game is too hard: I played UO before pvp was optional So, no the game isn't too hard. Nice try trying to shame me for havi g a life and being unable to dedicate my life to this game.
As I said I love this game. I couldn't play it when it came out because of some personal-family-financial issues. I was poor back in those days. I had to share the UO account with a friend of mine back in the day.

Glad you've calmed down a bit :).
Starting out new in EQ can be daunting there is a slight learning curve. Many people playing have 20 years of experience so they may be short tempered to things like this (the vast minority mind you).
When looking for help you should ask if anyone can help you as your just starting and haven't played before as they may be more forgiving.
A Lot of the time there are low level players but not new players to the game just looking for a hand out not real help or advice and that can wear some peoples patience thin.

I'm just gonna come out and say it. You're bad and you should feel bad.
It's nearly fucking trivial to fetch plat out of the bank in neriak and get it transferred to a new character. You don't need to be higher than level 1. You don't need to dedicate your life to the game. You just have to be even a little thoughtful (to figure it out for yourself) or polite (to ask for and receive helpful advice). You don't even need to trust another player, and doing so would cost you even less of your 60pp or whatever than a 10pp payment would to boot.
But you are not being a little thoughtful OR polite. You're being stupid, carrying on and on about how awesome you are and how it couldn't possibly be your fault that you can't figure out a little ingame issue that everyone else here knows how to deal with with ease, and making up excuses that are combined with ad hominems to rationalize your failure, etc. I mean, cd288 gave you legit advice based on the limited information you've provided, but you basically spit in his face rather than doing things like a well-adjusted social creature would and elaborating on your situation while nicely asking for assistance figuring things out.

Good point and good on you going legit so long here. :) I have occasionally run into super demanding people too. Although I think they were 1 in 10 maybe of total experiences I had helping lowbies and newbs out with a simple buff or cheap item giveaway etc.

I favor how Bandcamp (https://bandcamp.com/) does this. For example you can listen to any album or song. The standard is digital but some artists will release on cassette, vinyl, CD. Some go even further into the weird formats like MiniDisc, 3.5 Floppy for computer, Reel. Priced accordingly and usually in limited amounts. If something proves popular enough it will get a re-release.
If Steam did this with computer games I would gripe slightly less. (but that still doesn't remove consolitus)
So anyway, books (https://twitter.com/SorceryWs) and film.

Damn, with such an amazing personality, I can't believe you're having such a hard time with other people.

I've totally stopped playing wow because of this game.i even tried EQ live and it's a total shitshow. I lasted maybe 15 minutes before I got back on here.
Most people would prob be willing to help you with a plat transfer. There are usually a lot of people doing their auctions in the East Commonlands tunnel, so they are usually willing to help with transfers since they're just standing around there anyway. It's pretty rare to find a scammer and (no offense) 60pp is not a lot of money for most people at this stage so they're not going to risk getting banned over scamming you for that so you should be totally safe.
So use the character that you originally used to put the money in the bank to take it out, then run them over to the tunnel (not far from Neriak). Then run your new character there so you're easily able to switch over the them once you give someone the platinum on your original character.
You could do this in any other zone too, of course, but since EC is the auction hub I figured I'd mention that one since there are always a lot of people there.
Side note, when playing an evil character (class or race (also, worshipping an evil deity/religion can sometimes make an otherwise "good" class/race have problems as well)) always make sure to right click or /con on everything so you know if they're gonna kill you or not. Read the guides on the Wiki it will help.

All banks in EQ share the same inventory. So, you don't need to go into Neriak to access whatever is in your bank. Just go anywhere.
You cannot access the bank of another character, even from the same account. So, I don't know what you mean by "I don't have a toon that's strong enough to go in there and get it."
If you want to transfer loot from one character to another on the same account, camp both toons at the same spot, somewhere remote that no one might randomly walk by. On the character with the goods you want to give, drop them. Quickly camp and log in as the other character. The goods will be sitting on the ground in a bag. Money may or may not be dropable like this. If it isn't, buy an item that sells for nearly what you pay for it. Drop those items in the same way described above, and pick them up with the second character. Sell the items back to nearly what you bought them for. You will lose a little in "commission", but that is the price you pay for not trusting someone to hold onto your money for the 20 seconds it would take to do the transfer. Really, the best thing to do might be to use the 60pp to buy some low level armor and weapons, and transfer that to the new character to actually use.
Finally, 60pp sounds like a lot when you are level 1, but it really isn't much. Get to level 15 or so and you can make that in about an hour. Or at even lower levels, learn a bit of tailoring and you can turn ruined pelts into 60pp fairly quickly, all while leveling. I find the best place to do this is in Everfrost. Just watch out for the Vengeful skeletons.

It seems that he doesn’t have another character that he feels he could park in Neriak and transfer the play to and then get out alive.
Which was why I suggested he take out the plat on the Dark Elf and run to somewhere like EC where he can park his other character and transfer with ease.

But, he never actually confirmed he had a DE. He says he hates DE. I wonder if he ran into Neriak while running away from a golem. So, he zoned a low level good aligned character into Neriak. That might make life a bit rough if he desperately wants the 60p. Not sure how he would have managed that without dying, since he claims he didn't die.
Without more info, I assume your assumption is correct. Just grab the 60p, walk out of Nek into EC and camp/swap.

I've played on and off for almost 10 years and have only found a small handful of terrible players. I mean I've been KSed and and Ninja'd and I've done the same and usually it's about communication. The instances that could of turned sour most of the time are innocent mistakes. You speak then listen you'll get further, and Sorry goes a long way. Most the stuff just sounds like yo didnt get you way at a camp or free gear, but ill agree with him when it comes to the p99 community, definitely some of the more toxic, assholish, delusional people i have played with in an MMO. If you wondering what i mean by delusional, its the fact there are tons of neckbeards on here that think they are some how uber special cause they can neckbeard raid mobs that have been killed by thousands and were on farm status almost 20 years ago

Idk I don't necessarily think it's fair to call that person a turd or problem child unless they're like a higher level just farming. If you guys have a full group I think it's fair to let him have the 1 spawn...it won't materially affect your EXP.

well he would push into an orc camp regardless of the number of people there and isn't willing to join the party either. he just wants to get the camp through annoying the people already there. This person would involve guides in the outdoor zone fte rules to not let a party or person have a little 4 spawn orc camp to themselves. Technically not against the rules but definitely not an honorable player.

If he's unwilling to join the group, then that's kind of a dick move. Otherwise, it's not a dick move.
For example, there's tons of occurrences where duos or trios are trying to min/max their EXP and won't take on another player. If said player then decides to camp one of the spawns, that's not a dick move on their part because the other people weren't willing to let them join the group.

I think most of the complaints you see are probably BS complaints because they're being made by people who are upset that they can't immediately group in the most popular areas of the game and/or that the most popular cash/item camps are occupied and they have to wait their turn. As such, they say the community is "shitty" because there are people preventing them from doing what they want just by virtue of doing the same thing they want to do.
Just look at the two servers better than one thread in this forum. You have people in there saying that other people who happen to be killing mobs at the camps they want to do are min/maxing asshole neckbeards and that anyone who says they're not interested in those camps/high ZEM zones and just go off the beaten path are lying, disingenuous min/maxers who already have all the plat and loot they need. It's quite asinine.
Just ignore those comments when you read them.

Unfortunately, people are much more likely to come and complain about negative things they've experienced on the forum than talk about positives. Also, at least for me, people tend to be much more toxic on the forums compared ot how they actually conduct themselves in game. The forum shouldn't be taken as a complete reflection of how things actually are in the game.

I mean they do, but even then people will still cry about it. Multi-spawn camp is occupied and someone tries to negotiate a compromise to split the mobs somehow between the two parties. The party that was originally there says no.
So then essentially one party has to petition in order to get it on record. That may be the party that was originally there crying about how the new party is stealing their mobs. Or that may be the new party putting the staff on notice that this person is refusing to comply by the camp rules.
Tough to say that the new party is the cry baby in that instance if the original party just dug their heels in and refused to compromise at all.

well to be fair sig is new. like REALLY new. not just a returning player from years ago. it's a very different thing and I thnk every1 gets used to returning players but completely misses the boat on someone freshly minted. understanding this, you might have some compassion for sig. sig has no idea where to go or what do. probably isn't prepared for the long haul, or getting lost in a zone somewhere, dying and not knowing how to find the corpse. this is not a small ordeal for someone playing in 2020 with so many other MMORPGs out there.
i've played on p1999 before, quite a bit. i've played eq for a long time. everyone i've met has been friendly. i even rolled a dark elf sk alt--because i never played a dark elf before. the main difference i think is i had preknowledge about everything and the journey is a lot smoother that way. and being i actually like how eq plays, like corpse runs for example, almost nothing is a rude reminder of its "outdated gameplay," as htey might say.
sorry sig for your experience. people around here tend to have a blind spot for people like yourself. a lot of that's due to it being so uncommmon for people like yours trully to visit. EQ at this day and age is almost entirely composed of returning players. the live servers aren't any different.
this reminds me. on live the UI is so incredibly bloated i myself became like a new player when i tried it again. I cannot fathom what it must be like for someone new to everquest. i dreaded creating an alt--since hten i have leanred there's a way to copy the UI in options. the UI fills up half the screen even on 1900x1200 (whatever it's). i realize when eq released in 1999 it also had a large UI, however this is different. back then a large portion of the screen was just images. they had no function. these days, the scren is filled with functiaonal things liike buttons and chat and similar. it's crazy!!!!!!! starting out in teh tutorial almost broke my brain when i fist came back. what's unthinkable is a player new to everquest starts out with a heroic character. OMG. baby jesus died. information overload.
a good way for new player is just watch someone else play it. it's painful, but you'll see exactly how things are done:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSQmcHgxO2I
but really the only way to lenar is to play. you have to enjoy the core game mechanics, IMHO, at least somewhat. things like no maps, no glowing paths, no icons above NPCs, coin/item weight and encumberance, corpse runs, lots of traveling, diseases, trains, grouping-oriented, high death penalty, kill monsters much more than doing quests, not led around by a quest chain, chat with NPCs to get quests instead of a UI, and just unforgiving. otherwise it'll just be a burden. nostalgia alone has never been enough for me.
i enjoy the mechanics. it's the same reason i enjoyed wurm online, except wuyrm online is (or was anyway) a hybrid of old UO and eq.

I just started on green about a week ago. Finding the community very helpful. I ask for buffs and people always oblige, and kindly too. I even get buffed when I don't ask. I have grouped with many people in my first week and haven't had any problems. Not sure what you mean by a toxic community, I know the raiding scene is probably a bit elitist at the moment but that's no different anywhere else or any other game. You have the hard core players and those who aren't so hardcore.

After reading this second post by the original poster, I smiled a little inside... And I totally feel empathy for him lmao! He doesn't sound like a bad dude or anything, he just sounds like the 13-14 year old me in 2000 on my first day of everquest and how fustrating it was cause it was SO hard. Okay now compare him playing in 2020 after he's been playing all these easy video games and then runs into EQ (LOL!) Here's some advice tho ..stick with it! It'll become funner and easier I promise, that hardness your feeling is part of the everquest experience.. trust me. I remember those days well haha

well to be fair sig is new. like REALLY new. not just a returning player from years ago. it's a very different thing and I thnk every1 gets used to returning players but completely misses the boat on someone freshly minted. understanding this, you might have some compassion for sig. sig has no idea where to go or what do. probably isn't prepared for the long haul, or getting lost in a zone somewhere, dying and not knowing how to find the corpse. this is not a small ordeal for someone playing in 2020 with so many other MMORPGs out there.
i've played on p1999 before, quite a bit. i've played eq for a long time. everyone i've met has been friendly. i even rolled a dark elf sk alt--because i never played a dark elf before. the main difference i think is i had preknowledge about everything and the journey is a lot smoother that way. and being i actually like how eq plays, like corpse runs for example, almost nothing is a rude reminder of its "outdated gameplay," as htey might say.
sorry sig for your experience. people around here tend to have a blind spot for people like yourself. a lot of that's due to it being so uncommmon for people like yours trully to visit.

The OP's post reminds me of the Uber meltdown I had in 2001 when I lost my lvl 6 monk's corpse up a tree in the karanas. I "quit for good" that day, and then I played EQ for another 10 years. Quit this game now before it steals another minute of your life from you. =P

Gee I've been playing this game for literally 21 years, and this server for 11 years, and when somebody is a dick to me I just simply do not even remotely give a shit in any regard. And the rest of the time, people are generally cool and good. Your stupid temper tantrum didn't require that many separate line breaks OP. Please stop being a mad dork and play the game with us, or fuck off I don't care.

If you are upset by the community, make it better, you cant force these things. Ask yourself how you may make it better. Be kind and smile emote to your fellow adventurers. Offer them a helping hand. Or a bit of courtesy. It goes a long way and will make it's way back to you, in Norrath, and out.
That being said. I find it easy to deal with inconvenience and discourtesy when I myself am not the one creating it and moving it along. Do I faulter? sure. Do I have faults? Sure. People come here to have fun. They also come here to hide. And some to get away from what is hurting them. Sometimes they bring that pain here. They don't necessarily always mean to.
God bless.

Also, there is no other game with Neriak in it. A lot of love went into Neriak.
