Working on getting my Ogre SK to level 9. Already thinking about what to play as an alt to my SK, want to play something that isn't super popular.

Ogre SK is already the unpopular one
you should make a popular class alt imo

Ranger, wizard, paladin are the least popular 3 classes.

Oh... I figured Ogre SK is about as good of a group tank as you can possibly get while still being able to solo reasonably. Maybe I was wrong.

That's kind of what I was thinking. Any thoughts on race?

Yes Ogre SK is very great classic tank
I guess I more meant unpopular in groups bc of the huge XP penalty.
Did you mean popular as in widely rolled or popular for groups to pick up?

I cringe when any class brings an xp debuff into the party. I grouped with 2 SKs and a bard one night and my xp bar did not move. It was awful. Go solo with your xp debuff, stop making your poor decision to level a hybrid before velious everyone else's problem.
So, my advice, if you want to play an unpopular character, is to play the biggest xp penalty character there is - bonus points if they do no damage like a paladin vs non-undead.

Unpopular for a variety of reasons, not just unpopular for a group.

For the sake of being rare?
Probably half elf ranger, human wizard, and erudite paladin.

Wizards are the most viable unpopular class, since they can solo most effectively, and they are needed in the end game.
SKs and Rangers can sort of solo, SKs better than Rangers, but you aren't really *needed* in the end game the same way wizards are.

Paladins are popular alts bc of Ghoulbanes cheapness n Guise
If you want a rare class / race combo should do something like Wood Elf or Gnome warrior
you already have a hybrid

Maybe I'll make a guild where popular classes aren't welcome. Groups of 4 hybrids, Wizard and a Cleric will be common place. Let's see how slowly we can make the exp bar move.

Wizards aren't as bad atm in many exp groups as they will be eventually (and are on blue) due to the number of players vs the number of mobs. When I was grouping with my twinked rogue (phinny spear, PSD, str gear, etc) in unrest the other day, I was being vastly outperformed by the wizard in the group. Fights were fast enough with a warrior, mage, rogue, wizard DPSing that I'd almost never get a 3rd backstab in. I'd usually melee for like... 100-150 damage without lucky max BSs but the wiz or mage can do that much damage every 3 seconds then med while the puller tries to find another mob up.

Rogue is a fairly unpopular class. I think the least played on the server.
Gets a class exp bonus, welcome in groups, can gear out fairly well for not too high a cost (gloomwater harpoon pretty inexpensive). Hide/sneak can be fun.
But if you’re at lvl 9 and already considering an alt, you may just want to reroll your main altogether

Do we have updated numbers on class counts these days?
As for OP, I'd roll a druid to compliment your SK.
Reasoning:
* Great outdoors – SK is great indoors due to both invis types and FD
* Great mobility – Ports and SoW. No need to list a second pair of JBoots
* No XP penalty
* Can farm for your SK
* Get to play as a good class / race
* Caster QoL – Gate, etc.
If you absolutely have to be rare, I'd do a good race Wizard for most of the same reasons, except being a little less effective at farming outdoors, having a slight XP penalty and having to camp JBoots.

Let me clear up a few things about this whole myth morons push about SK's being able to "solo reasonably", a few facts from somebody who loves the class and played one since launch (live+99)
- your DPS, which is the worst out all the fighting classes except Paladin, will reach a tipping point and won't be able to exceed the mob's DPS (around lvl 35) vs decent EXPERIENCE giving mobs and your taps will not be able to keep up. That's with the BIS group drop weapons and well geared. Fear kiting is sorta doable, but again your not going to have the mana pool to actually support that type of xp grind for any length of time that would be considered "soloing".
Come Kunark when mobs get a huge DPS boost and the casters really get a fucking boost, you can forget it.
So can you technically kill mobs with no help post lvl 35? Sure. To the point it could be called "soloing" for XP on green like the other solo classes? No. Still the best group- duo tank and a ton of fun to play.

I also wanted to go as an unpopular class and went with a Wiz - there were some rough spots but just hit 39 and am having a blast. Once I get high enough to farm for money I plan on making a ranger twink

The only one worse than what he picked I think is Troll SK.

Is there a way to get current counts of active characters on the server? Not just logged on at a given moment but all characters. I'd be curious to know how many of each class/race combo exist on Green in total, and levels 40+, and levels 20+.

Not unless the staff have some numbers. They've dug out a few things in the past.

Killing mobs using 200-300 mana while only taking damage that can be repaired with a bandage or 3 is pretty good xp.
I solo'd KC entrance fairly efficiently. Of course most duo/trios are far more efficient, so I'd always be on the lookout for a teammate, but it was nice to be able to get some xp while waiting.
A guildmate solo'd specs from 35- 50 fairly efficiently on green, so untwinked.

I haven't noticed any class as being super rare, but a super rare combo is gnome cleric.

I'll be starting a Human Paladin. After reading all the whining going on about the lack of tanks on Green, It'll be an experience to see how hated they really are experience penalty and all.

Sn the rarest class/race combo is gnome warriors.
But out of ranger, paladin, wizard, I'd say try a ranger ..they are fun and have a bunch of utilities you can utilize. I.e off tank, cc, harmonize for solo pulls, snare mobs that are fleeing, track. Dps is decent. Furthermore, if you get bored you can always get some distance an shoot arrows an shit lol. You'll also get plane geared really fast if your a raider cause usually theres only about 2 rangers per guild (if that) which is cool as hell imo .
I'm thinking thats what I'm going to play this time around when a new PVP server opens up lol. A ranger ripped my ass to shreds with his PoSky bow + Kunark Disc, was shooting me for 300s hiding in a bush somewhere in EJ haha

He's not wrong. Taking multiple hybrids in a group has a significantly detrimental effect on experience. It is YOUR time playing, and if you're the group leader you can rightly make the choice not to have your time negatively affected by someone's class choice.
I've also grouped with 2 rangers and a bard in a group, and the experience gain was awful. People can play what they want, but shouldn't reasonably expect others to have to cater to their choice.

Halfling. Basically if you have brain damage do everyone a favor and play a halfling

Finally got my Ogre SK to level 9. Having spells/pet makes a huge difference. Hand my pet a halberd and life just got way easier. I may still start another character, so thank you for all the ideas. I did do a count of each and every race/class combination which I will post later if I have the time. In general, any class that cannot bind themselves were the least played, hybrid penalty did not seem to make a huge difference on counts. Top 5 played were Druid, Necro, Enchanter, Shaman, Magician I believe in that order, will confirm tonight when I look at my data.

Wizards are a great and really cool class. Decent crowd control, can get a lot of work done. People don't like them because they are mana dependent and don't get much to help them with that.
I love every class in the game but for my playstyle I wouldn't play a bard because of the sing song clicky clacky.

It's been that since the server opened; Teal too. You might note those are also closely aligned with the classes that have high solo-ability.

If you want a rare class / race combo should do something like Wood Elf or Gnome warrior
you already have a hybrid
My very first character ever (back when EQ first came out) was a Wood Elf Warrior. It was horrible!! Don't do that to yourself.

Used to LOVE a big SK tank when I was leveling my Rogue in Kunark era.. great tank, nobody holds aggro better (except the Cleric).

I've played main SK on live, p99 blue and p99 green
I rarely have trouble getting groups (mostly when the server pops are low, late hours)
I am a snap agro machine.
With only half decent gear, I can solo toe to toe or fear kite any mobs appropriate to my level. Toe to Toe requires stack of all dots I have and a fair amount of lifetaps. Medding back up isnt bad for any hybrids mana pool. alot faster than full casters.
I never hear complaints about hybrid xp in groups, if im pulling i keep the group at max pull rate they can handle.
Every class is all about player ability, if people know you are good, you will do fine in groups.

Windstriker is probably the hardest item in the game to get, GL.
It is Gnome War if considered as rare. definitely.
