View Full Version : Vendor Lock (one character per merchant)

I remember not being able to use vendors when another character was using them, similar to how TS containers are.
Was this alpha and never made it to classic, or just not mentioned in patch notes? Cannot find any mention in patch notes.
Asking because (1) I remember it classic (but could be misremembering) and (2) recent case of item theft while recharging brought it to mind.
Thankfully, I haven't been ganked by these underhanded con artists, but the threat is real yo.
Anyone remember this or find any post, patch note, etc. in regards to this?

I don't remember this in live. Seems like a good way to troll popular vendors though. Right click them and go afk.

Don't ever recall this on Live, however I didn't start playing until kurnark.

Perhaps no one could see the items you sold until you exited vendor? Like they wouldn't be committed to the global inventory until exited?
I agree that vendor trolling would have been more of a thing with your system. Could lock down PoH or PoA port stones

Don’t remember this at all. I played in Classic and know I definitely would have found it extremely annoying if I had to keep trying to find a vendor that someone wasn’t using, so I’d have probably remembered this if it ever happened.

I'm not trying to block the tink bag merchant! I'm just roleplaying an indecisive gnome who needs a long time to decide what he wants to buy!

Eh? That seems very much incorrect.

If there is no time limit, then it could be used to grief, just like hogging the ONLY cultural forge. Just set time limit per character of 2 minutes with 10 second lockout.
Most people can get their business done in 2 minutes and if someone goes AFK while at vendor, the worse case scenario is in <2 minutes you can hop on that vendor.
Most of the time there are other vendors around anyhow.
Since Devs have intentionally left in recharging in, it would be nice for them to take a public stance on it. If it's theft to take someone's item they are recharging (like prayers of life, or whatever) then policing it could be a pain - simple solution is 2 minute vendor lock with 10 seconds lockout per character. No CSR necessary - do your business in 2 minutes or else.
If on the other hand sniping recharged items is copacetic practice... then having a public stance from Dev team would be good to clear these... "rogue roleplayers"...

What there was was 1 trade box open per actual player, which would feel like vendor lock when you had to open bags up in EC tunnel or GFAY to see what items were for sale (because no linking)
Item recharging is basically an exploit mechanic that ended up being allowed. Buying an item from a vendor merchant is not theft. It's basically like drop transferring.

You might be mixing your brain signals between being able to interact with a quest npc..
I remember this too though.. but I also thought Sinbad was in a movie where he played a genie.

If people are able to recharge items at vendors, then someone invis has just as much right to scoop those items up if they're available.
Easy fix is to use an out of the way merchant. The guy on the RnF forums posting on getting recharge items taken was using a Gypsy merchant that is HEAVILY frequented. Took no precautions. Several out of the way vendors to do this on safely. This practice certainly doesn't need any dev involvement to "lock" vendors or some such. It's not classic anyway, not to mention completely unnecessary.

when someone was using a merchant on classic he would say he was busy, just like only one person could open a forge.

I got burned, lesson learned. I just didn’t realize that being a piece was so heavily supported on p99, so I didn’t take the necessary precautions. Now I know. That said, as a monk I can’t see invis and what good does /who do when people are anon. Luckily, I only do a few at a time. I have heard many many other stories of this happening to people all over. One guy even said he had 8 taken from him. Anyways, the funny thing is all the people supporting these thieves, guess we know what types of people y’all are. It doesn’t take a whole lot of effort to be decent. Just because someone doesn’t lock their door doesn’t mean the robber is justified in robbing their house. “it’s their fault, not the robbers, they should have known better and locked their doors”:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Dont recharge 9 gold items people sell for 2k in public places.
Any random noob would likely have done the same, Id wager probably over half the population would likely have jacked them bc they would have thought recharging where you did would be dumb.
Red Wood Wand levelers must understand, their method is frowned upon by the majority and with how crazy people pay for the wands, each time you recharge em this is a risk that is part of the cost of leveling with them.

I don’t mean to imply that the Rogue isn’t a POS for taking your items. He is, and he did it knowingly; I don’t believe there are any EQ noobs on the server who couldn’t recognize what they were buying. But if I leave the keys in my car with the engine on and doors unlocked, I’m also at fault if someone steps in and drives away with it, as is the person who takes it.
This thread may perhaps put folks on notice who group with him. If he does this, maybe he’s the type to repeatedly pickpocket mobs while in a group, or even ninja loot items. Maybe not, but it does open the door for speculation.

Putting your items on the vendor makes them not your items. Leaving your keys in the car doesn't make it not your car.

True. And while the wands are technically not his upon vendoring them, still a fairly shitty move to swipe them knowing that OP was doing a recharge. Albeit not against the rules though.

Steal all the wands and snap em in two. Recharging and Red Wood Wands are a blight on servers.

Honestly I would have taken the items too and not even felt bad about it, as a stance against recharge abuse and recharging items at non-remote vendors.
