View Full Version : What is the deal with you people and pet torches

This shouldn't cause anything to attack with their offhand

Then... even stranger, i see the mage sword + torch combo. Wtf kind of blue beta 99 brainwashed weird shit is that? Just use two mage swords?

Also, I see lvl 20 and below pets visibly dual wielding 2 weapons given to them. Until 24, they should only show 1.

Please don't name shame the countless pets that died holding a Rusty 2h + torch for me to get where I am now.

Pouring one out for the true OG's

They should be able to dual wield 2h weps. Need to test that.

Torch + 2h does nothing before 24 and with the pets innate damage at 24, I see no real point in the 2h.

They're showing both weps before 24 and shouldn't for sure.

Maybe Dolabeard cares enough to join me on this one.

They use torches so group members can easily identify the charmed pet from the other mobs.

Since no one actually answered the question, it's to force dual wield since NPCs won't dual wield unless explicitly given an offhand in classic -- or, at least, so goes the rumor. In this case, torches are the most affordable and light offhand (counts as a weapon, oddly). And, indeed, it also helps identify them but that's not the real intention.

Don't mage pets dual wield at 20 if given weapons?

Don't mage pets dual wield at 20 if given weapons?

Good question. It was skills based, not pet-level-summon based. Sometimes the highest summon of the previous circle would have a high enough skill while the lowest of the current circle would not.

Examples are auto-dual-wield and offhand-double-attack. Classically the highest 39 pet would have these (just offhand-double-attack at first, then auto-dual-wield later on) but the lowest 44 pets would not. This was fixed later by tightening the level range of the 44 summons from 33-37 to 36-37 (I found a dev post from Absor about it). Level 36+ pets (as in, their actual level) would have these abilities but level 35 and under pets would not.

I'm actually not sure if the highest 20 mage pets could have dual wielded but it wouldn't surprise me. I know the highest 24 necro pet could dual wield.

Animate Dead 20 15-19 Warrior 325-375 14-22 14-16 - - Bleached Skeleton Double Attack, Dual Wield @19 (requires weapons)

Lvl 19 reicht zumindest bei den Necro Pets für dual wield !

Gotcha. Based on what I'm seeing on the Wiki (who knows if it's right or not), the lvl 20 mage pet (highest possible summon at that lvl) can dual wield but it requires weapons. Unsure if that's how it works on green/teal or not. Guess I'll mess around a bit tonight.

I thought all pets were capable of dual wielding, regardless of level? When I hand Gabartik two rusty maces, he equips them both at lvl 4. Are you telling me he isn’t wielding them both expertly!?

This is another bug... classically, pets would only equip a weapon in their offhand if they had the dual wield skill.

First time I've heard this skills based argument. What's the source material?

Maybe i can help you answer the sword/torch shenanigans. Swords will not overwrite torch or coldstones/heatstones for that matter. So if one of those is given before sword, he keeps until death.

First time I've heard this skills based argument. What's the source material?

This:

Higher level Magician, Necromancer, and Shadowknight pets now have the ability to dual-wield without being handed weapons. The calculation used to determine whether or not this ability exists takes several things into account, but for the most part 39th level and above summons (higher for the Shadowknight) will have this ability. It is possible that you could get a 'good' 34th level pet that will, or a 'bad' 39th level pet that will not have this ability.

And a post by Gordon, I will try to dig it up again.

Looks like I got my level ranges mixed up too for offhand-double-attack and auto dual wield. Bugger it's hard keeping this all straight sometimes :D

Topic : Pet Changes

This came of the official EverQuest message boards.

A while back magician pets were given the ability to wield weapons. This was a workaround for the fact that these pets were unable to duel-wield properly.

After the next patch, pets summoned using necromancer or magician spells of 39th level or higher should duel wield, even without weapons. This will also include the Shadownight pets that are the same as necromancer pets of 39th level or better. So these pets will be duel wielding properly henceforth.

- Alan

Just one clarification, the "auto dual wield" ability is based upon a calculation of both the dual wield skill and the level of the pet. So, it is possible that you could get good summon at 34th that auto dual wields without weapons, or a bad summon at 39th that doesn't.
As a note, no change is being made to their likelihood to dual wield. The change is only going to remove the requirement of handing your pet weapons to get them to dual wield at the higher levels.

So honest question about pets, if i may deviate from topic ever so slightly:

Is it not till a later level that pets are able to actually dual-wield? I actually thought even the early level pets were able to because they showed both weapons as a graphic, but is this a bug and they don't in fact dual-wield till later level?
