This is what i do: I go to wikipedia and turn to finnish language or I search finnish songs
their words are large and weird and I dont know what they mean but they sound cool in my opinion, so I choose one and cut in half for name and surname
examples:
word: surutulitus
toon name: Suru
surname: Tulitus
word: kaivelevat
toon name: Kaive
surname: Levat

I’m always torn between making the name something “fantasy-ish” in keeping with the theme of the world, or making something funny/tongue-in-cheek. Analysis paralysis lately has left me with most of my characters having no surname at all, though. An account of Madonna’s.

Most of my characters had throwaway names until I made my SK on live. Cazic worshipping Erudite SK, so I anagram'ed some of the letters in Cazic Thule to make Elizuth, then went with Muramasa as a surname because he was a swordsmith said to make evil blades. Elizuth was the only toon I ever GM'ed blacksmithing on.
Current toon on teal is named Lobnor Feverheaver. My buddy in college had a D&D character named "Lobnor the Beaver Heaver" so he is named in his honor.
I find I put the most effort into the characters where I actually put thought into their name. Failed characters on live (most from when I was still a teenager) include Aystar Spatterblades, Zegzy Beast, Spamme Sandwiche, Ffurball Forgotten, and many many more.

I've been using the same 3-4 names in video games for like 15 years cause I have absolutely no creativity with character names. I'll legit sit and stare and the name field for 10 mins and just draw a blank for good names. If I need a new one, I'll usually just scroll through a random name generator and tweak one slightly that sounds decent.

In the Western fantasy tradition, some races have Gaelic-influenced names, others Nordic, Old English, or Latin. I like to skim through online dictionaries to get a feel for how words are structured in those languages. Then I piece together syllables that sound good together. After writing down maybe 20 or 30 ideas in a given language, I whittle it down to the most aesthetically pleasing words. Then I carve them up until I create the perfect name.
Ogres and Trolls are fun because their 'language' isn't rooted in any European dialect. I have a system where I omit certain consonants and vowels and limit the names to two syllables. It's really easy once you get a feel for it.

Gotta be careful what you name your toon. Lot of sensitive PC bitches that will tell on you if they don’t like it.

I often have a theme for each game. In Shadowbane I named all my characters after comedians, for example: Lenny the Bruce, Belushi theDeadOne, etc.
