View Full Version : My First 6 Hours...

At 6PM, I started a gnome necromancer after not playing this game for 13 years. I was watching Twitch and some streamer mentioned this and I installed it. I played the original EQ upon release in 1999 and followed it through to 2006 with my Vah Shir Beastlord being my main. I also had an Iksar Monk.
Anyway, after doing about 30 minutes of setting my UI up and remembering how to navigate around Ak'anon, I headed out into the noob killing fields. I had announced for a group and nobody responded at the time. So, I just started soloing as a necro to make some cash to buy a pet spell. The Ak'anon noob area is literally an optical illusion hell hole. Things look much farther away than they are. If you don't aggro 2 or 3 things while pulling, you get a yellow spider or coyote as a surprise guest. I remember the pathing but here is what made me mad:
1. It took me literally 6 hours to level from 1 to 3 as a gnome necro.
2. The leveling seemed to drag moreso than in the original EQ. I don't know if the admins have exp turned on the lowest settings but I remember vividly making level 2 almost immediately and then getting to 5 within a few hours or less. 6 hours to get to level 3! I died so much that I almost stopped scribing the spells back into my spell book.
3. I played 7 years, took a 13 year break, and came back to leveling 1-3 in 6 hours! WTF?
Ok, just scratch 3. It's a repeat of 1. I was really pissed.
The good news about today was that there were a lot of helpful people online to give encouragement and a few pieces of gear that really helped. To those individuals, I thank you.
My thoughts after logging out was that I want to get out of Steamfont as soon as possible. There's just not enough stuff to kill between everyone fighting over it or needing bones to summon pet and can't find any. Anyway, I'll try again tomorrow as it may be a better day. However, at level 60, I'm coming back and wiping that whole noob pit out just for spite. Hell Hole, it was for me today.

I'm just going to say it. You are a liar and can't be trusted. You played a Vah Shir Beastlord on launch? Doubt it, just like cat to play games and tell lies though....

Well, first of all, that's not nice. No. I made a gnome wizard that I abandoned when Velious came out for an Iksar Monk. Then when Luclin came out, I made a Vah Shir Beastlord that I enjoyed playing most of all and raided with.
Even though I left out that information, jumping at new player's jugulars is not a cool way to promote this game or server. You guys need to chill out. I'm just presenting facts as they happened to me. Thank you.

Also, my characters started out on Solusek Ro servers and ended up on Bristlebane. I can pay and login right now and show you each character...and then you will look really dumb. But that's not the purpose of my rant. Just calm down.

Sounds like you're terrible at eq since you played a beast and monk ( braindead classes) gnome is a good choice since they are the little complainers and wimps

In the original EQ, everyone got a 100 ZEM from levels 1 to 6. I only discovered this recently. Hopefully changes will be made in the future, the early levels aren't meant to be so hard.

Hey I felt the same feelings after coming back after a hiatus. If I were you I’d make my way to greater faydark and go to orc hill at 4 or so, then move into crushbone at 7-8. Also the bandit camp would be perfect for you at 5-6ish if you are feeling bold.

I get that this was posted in RNF, but the trolls need to lay off this new player. If you want to pick on someone, pick on me, you classless asshats.
Hey Guru... sorry your experience was a bit slow. The upside is that there are plenty of people who like to help newer players get started and give out hand-me-downs. Don't be afraid to ask! If you are on Teal and you see me out in Steamfont hunting down rogue clockworks, shoot me a /tell and I can gather up some bone chips for you!

If you make it to EC hit me up, I’ll give you some dearhfist belts to turn in that will literally skip you ahead a few levels. Assuming a gnome Necro can do the turn in.

The ZEMs are not balanced as per classic, as far as I know, and don't think they'll be balancing them. Once you get to guk or other high ZEM zones levels will fly by that were brutal on live.

I win as a normal human being.
The vast majority of the people in Rants and Flames don't even vaguely qualify as "normal". Don't worry about it. Game itself is fine except for the high levels being dominated by jerkasses, but many of the forum posters set new standards for bitterness and nastiness.
That said, this is classic EQ that you never played. It was this hard and that's one of the reasons we keep coming back to P99 is that it IS the original hard EQ. Most of the people here are on the opposite end of the scale from the people who play the modern MMO RPGs where you literally have to be too stupid to walk and chew gum at the same time to die.
Further, there is very minimal high-level content at this point, and it will stay that way until Kunark comes out. So going real fast just takes you to a place where you have almost no options.
A better strategy is to not worry about leveling speed and worry about doing some interesting, challenging things. Leveling slower means more opportunities to hunt in various locations before you out-level the content.
Right now, easily available is GFay and Crushbone, and the former has plenty of decaying skeletons for chips.
Or you could catch a boat and hit Nektulos, you can level a necro up to the 20s easy just by going Nektulos>Lavastorm>Najena. Dozens of places in the Commonlands too for low levels, dozens and dozens of places for teens- befallen, all the Karanas, Highhold, blackburrow and Everfrost, Kithicor, You go fast, you'll hit maybe a third of them.
I'd rather go at 1/4 speed and hit all those places and awesomely gear out a teens character, then maybe move to half speed and have fun every day kicking ass with my awesomely geared-out teens character.
The other thing I don't get about the rush to level is that a fight at level 15 is almost identical to one at 40. People will be using slightly different tactics due to spells/abilities being a bit different, but the length of the fight and the flow of the fight will be basically identical. More damage is done, but since everyone starts with more health and the healing spells are scaled, if you ONLY watch the health bars of a group and the mob(s) they're fighting, there is absolutely no way to tell whether you're looking at a level 10 or a level 60 fight.
The only thing that makes a difference to me in leveling is that spells and abilities change periodically so you end up using slightly different tactics with each major upgrade and that helps keep things fresh, and same thing with gear- it's nice to change periodically for the sake of change.
But that's not enough to make me rush or ever worry about leveling speed unless I'm managing to actually go backward.

It can be a bit of a trek, but the freeport newb yard in north ro is the best place to do the first few levels. Like 50% of the mobs are decaying skeletons (weapons/armor/bones in their loot tables). Last week I did 1-4 there on a wizard exclusively killing decaying skels. Hit level 4 in full cloth armor, 28plat from selling armor and weapons, and 14 stacks of bone chips.

Same. Even having been an original EQ veteran, I felt like the initial levels took longer than I would've thought they would. I was so shocked and in awe when I first started playing the game though that I probably wasn't paying attention much to how long it took to level at the time.

I mean back in the day how much time did we spend just looking at zone features like the sky or some random building?
Eq wasn't fast back in 2000 and we were probably all mitch more of the mindset to "enjoy the ride" so it just wasn't as painfully perceived.

My first character back in '99, I was scurred of dying somewhere and losing my patchwork armor forevah. I'm sure that full 6-man group I was in camping the 4 undeads at the Nektulos wizard spire must have been bangin xp.

Lol ... the mobs killed per unit time back in the day would probably blow our minds today. Yet... we did it and remember the game so fondly.

First, thank you to all of you who constructive and kind posts. Your advice is greatly appreciated and I have printed it out.
Last night (Monday), I managed to join a wonderful group composed of all pet classes (coincidence) and we were mauling kobolds left and right for several hours. It was so much fun and I was able to get to level 7. I understand it's not necessarily the speed in which you level, but I really enjoyed this particular group. I know everyone plays at their own pace but plans were already being talked about for this evening and it's hard to not want to be a part of that. All of this brings back good memories since most of my friends aren't interested in playing at the moment. Sometimes I wonder if I'm crazy starting all this over again but it's just one character.
Thanks again for all your offers of help and kindness. It is greatly appreciated. To those just using this as a burn forum, bless your hearts.

I'm glad you had some successful play time. To address your final sentence, this essentially is a burn forum. I understand that you're new and don't realize what the Rants and Flames forum is supposed to be, but it's not the commenters' fault that you posted in the wrong forum. next time, I advise the relevant server's discussion forum :)

@Guru,
Welcome, mate.
I'd like to properly introduce you to a very "special" place on the interwebs. The playerbase on P99 is an odd section of the human population. It attracts some poeple that are... I guess the best term I can think of to describe them is unaware. They are unaware of what civility is. It's like they grew up in a jungle, raised by wolves with no concept of normalities of a civilized society.
RnF is where the server management basically let's them run wild without restraint and near-to-zero consequences. It keeps the rest of the forums free from the garbage they spew. It's a necessary evil.
I hope you enjoy your stay here. Try to avoid the shitheads. Enjoy everyone else.

That's like telling people at a methadone clinic that drugs are bad, and they shouldn't take methadone. Think of this forum as a combination of therapy and sequestration of irritants. Basically a cross between a methadone clinic and a carbuncle.
