View Full Version : 25 minutes for 3 swimming skill? Really?

I sure as fuck didn't need over 24 hours to max swimming in classic by AFK numlocking into a corner. And here not only does it take that long, but I can't even do it while afk? I shouldn't actually have to cross WK in the water every time I want 1 skillup, right?

Rabble rabble rabble.

There was another thread that mentioned the "randomness" of skill-ups, at least how they seem to come in bunches at time (and then lay dormant at others). Maybe swimming is in the same boat?

I'm up to 50 skill just by running along the water's edge as I travel. Sometimes I won't get a single skillup, other times I'll get several back to back. Feels #classic to me.

Maybe try swimming outside of the boat. You'll skillup faster *Flies away*

You got low int? That should have an impact.

Also try running in a circle over parts of Innothule where you aren't quite swimming but still partially submerged. My swimming secret has been leaked.

It did take quite a while on live to get it up, couldn't say exactly how long but wasn't super quick.

I'm afraid I'm about the opposite of an erudite when it comes to int. I assumed agi or dex affected swimming, heh.

Tecmos is right, swimming skill ups were nerfed a while back on blue even. I noticed the impact when making a new character and figured it was probably in preparation for green. It takes wwaayyy longer than it should to level swimming. I'm not sure the reason behind it. How could swimming be exploited?

Wait we can't actually afk numlock to level swimming... y tho

Thats like as dumb as not being able to bind sense heading. If that's true.

I doubt anyone, and definitely not the majority, want to level swimming manually. And if they say they do then they're lying.

if you swim in a circle or otherwise move around it goes up normally

Is it possible to outpace certain mobs by maxxing out our swimming skill? It doesn't seem like it?

I got 50 points in 20 minutes at EE. You don't get swimming skillups if your /loc doesn't change. Swim in a circle not into a wall.

No AFK swimming was on live iirc. If not at launch, soon after.

Why don't you just start all skills at 100? Doesn't sound like most people here want to actually play the game.

My experience is that swimming has always been slow, but like Sense Heading, it speeds up once you reach a certain level, like around 40. Those first few points are tough, but they are tough also with Sense Heading. It's just that Sense Heading is a skill that requires a key, while swimming requires interaction with the environment. AKA, playing the game. My swimming is level 50 or so. Just from swimming in and out of Halas.

You want a skill that is killer to level up? How about Alcohol tolerance. Where is the cool AFK/Hot Key/ uber-macro for that?

You can swim into a corner as long as it has you occasionally jumping out of the water. Not sure why that seems to matter, but it seems to have an effect.

Don't be a bitch.

Exploiting swim in a corner is classic.

I suspect the change/fix was that no movement means no skillups, so if you're hopping up it can still happen, but wedging right into a corner with an EB item going or something won't work.

I was swimming back and forth across West Karana. My loc was changing like 30,000 units per lap.

Hmm, makes me think there is another thing at play. I'm an ogre Shaman with corresponding stats and swam in Lower guk.

Possible different bodies of water (zone) or stats impact results? Maybe even weight?

Didn't swim originally use up Endurance? I seem to remember something like that.

Lock a turn (similar to strafe lock when bard kiting) and swim in a circle. Maxed 200 no problem on green in a shallow city pond.

Most of the skills ESPECIALLY DEFENSE, gain way too fast here. You could go a entire level tanking on EQmac and were lucky to get 1 or 2 defense points.

Depended on your STA. 100 was the magic number. Once I had 100 sta I could melee/swim forever.

I think intelligence number is a factor. My 133 int wiz swam just a little so far but it's leveling up quite fast samething with sense heading. I remember swimming on live in lake rathetear in a counter clockwise and getting 30 skillups for each lap. And yes in my experience your speed in the water makes a big difference if mobs chasing you.

On live I use to skill up my swimming by swimming in the fountain in Unrest. While I was LFG I would put on number lock and swim, going no where, and max out swimming super quickly. I have not been able to do this on p99

I always had the impression that skills left low until higher levels can be slower to get rolling. Just an impression, no testing done. My wife made it to 60+ on live, raiding with her shammy, with a defense of two. I stopped taunting for awhile:)

Running through the edges of water in the swamp while leveling, seems great for swimming skill ups.

Circle swimming has been decent skillups from what I've seen

AgentEpilot
11-22-2019, 10:43 PM
Swimming seems to be weird at times, even with the ancient and powerful circle trick, it will barely go up. Other times I fall in the water and on my way out I gain 7 skill ups.

What I do is the circle thing, see if I get skill ups, if not I get out and try again. Probably all bullshit but it makes me feel like it is working.

Yes. The game checks for a swimming event more often when you change directions. I mean I have no fucking idea, but I swam a dozen times from the end of oasis to the northern ro and then I went swimming in a circle in Neriak in front of the PoD and the difference wasn't just noticeable, it was amazing.

In Kunark, I definitely got skill ups swimming against a wall in crushbone. I specifically remember doing this as no one wanted to group with my halfling warrior and I had nothing else to do.

I only remember it working against walls if there was like a waterfall or something. People used to use felwithe all the time for this. numlock and afk facing a waterfall or something like that. You couldn't do it everywhere. only certain places.

AgentEpilot
11-23-2019, 09:02 AM
There seems to be a “sweet spot” for it too, some times circle swim even with loc changing will give 1 skillup in 10 minutes, other area it can give 10 in 2 minutes, I usually move somewhere else if I don’t see a skill increase in about 2 minutes. Definitely one of the weirder skills in terms of when it will go up.

One of the best places I've found to practice swimming is the big circular moat pool inside Neriak. Don't ask me where it's been years since I've been there, but it's a large water donut and has always leveled my swimming up quickly. Whenever I dinged, next time into the city would involve a run there followed by a few minutes of swimming to max it again.

I got my swimming from like 20 to 82 on my sham in upper guk killing swampwater crocs in the teens over by AC. And that was just swimming far enough to pull them from water back to AC area. I think its just skillup RNG shat on your hard.

Seems classic to me. My original toon on classic (human bard with 75 INT) started early 2000 and I didn't max swimming till Velious. Defense either... I remember getting 200 defense pulling PoG. I was way over 100 days /played at that point.

Swimming in Guk is filthy; it's like swimming in a pool of bong water. You should be gifted additional skillups.
